"The Free Lance" Issue September 16, 1904 BOB THOMAS CAUGHT Chief FANT has received notice that one of his constables, Mr. JENKINS, had caught Bob THOMAS, one of the most elusive and skilled operators of a "blind tiger" that the constabulary has had to deal with in a long while and when the trial of Thomas takes place next week he will find five different charges pending against him as follows: transporting, storing and keeping, carrying by night, being a nuisance and selling. Thomas caught yesterday in York County by Constable JENKINS of Rock Hill, who found 18 gallons of whiskey in the turnout which THOMAS drove. The whiskey, buggy and horse were all promptly seized by the constable. THOMAS was caught Friday in by Constable EWBANKS, having in his possession 115 pints of whiskey, corn liquor etc. and plead guilty to the charge of transporting. He was released upon the promise of good behavior but the charges were left standing in case he should be guilty of further violations of the dispensary law. As THOMAS has again been caught violating the law, the old charges against him will be revived and also the new ones growing out of the seizure yesterday. Thomas is said to be on of the most extensive operators of the "blind tiger" business in all this section and the constables are much gratified over the fact that Thomas has been caught at last. I understand he was blind. The obit index lists Texanna Brown Waddell as his wife. This was possibly a second marriage for both: In 1934 Texana was listed as Mrs. Tex Robinson in her mother's obit. In the 1930 census of Cherokee, SC I have found a Felix Waddell with wife Cora and children Bryan?, Lumbo (Columbus), Mary R and Ola and also on the 1920 census with wife Cora, children Brison, Columbus and Mary. There was also a Felix Waddell on the 1930 Spartanburg census with wife Mae, and children Blanche, Nettie? Mae and Bittie/Bettie. Both of these Felix Waddell's could have been about the right age to be the Felix that later married Texana. I have not found Texana/Tex/Texie on any census other than possibly the 1900 and therefore do not know if she had any children. Her obit index listing gives death date as 1960. This ! may be in error but she was deceased by Feb 1971. If you're connected to this family I would really like to correspond. I have a good deal of info on Texana's brothers/sisters and also a picture of Felix and Texie at a gathering in possibly the 1940's/1950's.

"The Free Lance" Issue: September 9, 1904 THE FIRE WEDNESDAY NIGHT Shortly before five Wednesday morning an alarm of fire was rung in and the department responded quickly, the fire being located in the kitchen of the West End Hotel. The guests were all thoroughly aroused and left their rooms as quickly as possible to escape any impending danger. The department soon had several streams of water playing on the fire. In their efforts to extinguish the blaze the department flooded the store of Getsinger's furniture establishment located under the hotel and on the ground floor and the greater damage by water is said was in the furniture store. The fire is supposed to have originated from a box of hot ashes left out over night. The smoldering embers blazed up and set the flooring of the kitchen on fire. The damage to the kitchen was slight. The stock in Getsinger's store suffered to the extent of $150 according to most conservative estimates. Boy Run Over by Buggy Tuesday, at 9:30 o'clock Leroy HAUGHTON, a young white boy, collided with a buggy driven by a Negro, near Becker's corner on East Main street, and was thrown violently to the ground beneath the horse's feet. The boy was quickly pulled out from under the buggy and medical aid summoned, young HAUGHTON being carried to Irwin's drug store. An examination showed that no bones were broken but that the boy's hands and several fingers were badly mashed. The affair caused considerable excitement as it was first thought that the boy was badly hurt. SUICIDE IN NEWBERRY COUNTY Newberry, Sept. 5-Charlie BUNDRICK, a white man, living about three miles from Little Mountain, this county, committed suicide yesterday by drinking between four ounces and a half and a pint of laudanum. He procured the drug at Pomaria on Saturday night. On Sunday morning he drank the stuff and at 5 o'clock in the evening he was dead. Dr. J. M. SEASE was in attendance, but the man was beyond the point where medical science could be of any avail. He was a well-to-do farmer. He leaves a widow. DOINGS AT DUNCANS -O.M. MOORE is erecting a substantial and pretty dwelling. It is beautifully located, contains ten rooms and will cost between $2,000 and $3,000. -J. W. WOOD, agent of the Southern Railway, has recently purchased a lot, and expects to build a neat residence. -The Baptist Church is undergoing repair and will be painted inside and outside. -The new W.O.W. is striving to add to its membership all the available timber in this vicinity. NEW PROSPECT POINTS: -Miss Clara McMillian and brother Robert LOVE, have returned to their home at Chicota, Tex., after spending several months here. Her sister, Matsy, will remain in Spartanburg until Christmas. -Mrs. John L. CLEMENT, is spending awhile with her daughter, Mrs. Robert DENTON of Spartanburg. -Mrs. McWHIRTER and children have returned from Seneca. -R. Vaden McMILLIN and son are erecting new ginneries with the very latest and most improved machinery at this place. -J. Herbert CLEMENT is having fine luck with fish baskets in South river. He made a catch of 64 last week. HAD HIS THROAT CUT Arthur BEECHAM, a young white man about 21 years of age, living on Forest street, was cut across the left cheek and side of the neck Saturday night by another young man named ANDERSON. Both are operatives in the Spartan Mills. Several weeks ago the Anderson who inflicted the injuries on young Beecham Saturday night and his brother had a difficulty with the former but nothing serious resulted from the affray and it was thought that the trouble had blown over and the three men had become reconciled. But it appears that the Andersons were only waiting for an opportunity for revenge, at least that is what Beacham's [sic] friends say, and Saturday night it is said, Anderson called at Beecham's house about 9 o'clock and appeared at the front gate. He asked that the young man come to the gate and when he complied with the request a few minutes later, Beecham staggered into the house with a gash six inches long in his throat and cheek and bleeding profusely. Anderson was seen running away from the place and he has not yet been heard of. The injuries necessitated prompt action on the part of physicians as there was considerable loss of blood. The wound was dressed and several stitches were taken. He was getting along satisfactorily this morning and he will in all probability recover from the injury. PELHAM POINTS --Mrs. P.A. GLENN and son, Norman, leave today for their home at Traveler's Rest after visiting relatives here and at Greets. --Tommie BURNELL of Spartanburg spent Sunday with his parents. --Downs Entricare of Spartanburg spent Sunday at the home at Samuel BURNETT. --Messrs. Hendrix WHITE and BROCKMAN of Greers spent Sunday at Abner's Creek. --There was a large crowd of young people gathered at home of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander McHUGH on Sunday. free post Lisa

"The Free Lance" Sept 2, 1904 Cowpens "Mr. and Mrs. J. B. WILKINS and little Harriet returned from Gaffney yesterday after spending several days with friends. -Mrs. J. B. WILKINS is confined to her room with a sprained foot." If I am correct, the above reference is a JOHN B. WILKINS, wife was FRANCE CALDWELL, they had a son HORACE born in 1906 along with HARRIETT, born in 1903. FRANCE CALDWELL is my great-grandfathers' sister. She was born around 1880 and died before 1916 as she was not listed in the settlement of my great-grandfathers' estate, but JOHN WILKINS, HORACE, and HARRIETT were. She was the daughter of J. J. CALDWELL and DRUSILLA KELLY (Drusilla died in 1900 in Darlington) J. J. remarried a BESSIE (believe last name was BLANTON) and they lived in Cherokee Co., SC until his death in 1916. I just acquired the above information week before last during a quick trip to that area. If anyone has any additional information on these families I would love to hear from you. Tanya C. My great-great grandfather was Dillard L. COOPER and Parthenia ANDREWS/ANDERS HOLMAN, from Wilkes Co, GA. (Parthenia was a daughter of Michael L. ANDREWS and Parthenia PULLIN, born in Georgia) Parthenia has various spellings--Bethenia, Parmelia, etc. And some of the PULLIN family name is shown as PULLEN. Dillard and Parthenia (shown on marriage record as Parmelia) married Aug. 1876, Monroe Co., Brinkley, AR. The ANDREWS/ANDERS family left Georgia about 1855 or 56 and were in Arkansas by 1857. Both COOPERs and ANDERS show up on 1870 census in Monroe/St.Francis Counties, Richland and Plainland townships in Arkansas. My Dillard's parents were Benson COOPER and Delphia Lindsey (various spellings) Spartenburg, SC. Benson also had a brother, Dillard, who ended up in Texas. Much has been found on his line by a number of people. My information has been gathered from several online family trees which showed my gg grandfther Dillard L. as a son of above Benson. I have information on Dillard L, (son of Benson) descendants, but am still searching for children who may have been raised by Dillard L. and Parthenia, who had several marriages, and I think Dillard also had several marriages. The only child I now know of is my great grandmother, Clara, born July 21, 1878, Brinkley, Monroe Co, AR, died May, 1979, McNeil/Magnolia, ARk and buried in Little Rock, ARK. Clara married William David McLAIN, 1898 and they made their home in Newport, Jackson, ARK until the early 1920s--had many children born there. I have made contacts with family trees on the COOPERs that trace the family back to England. You may post here or contact me at audstan@chartertn.net

"The Free Lance" Issue: September 2, 1904 INTERESTING FAMILY HISTORY Following interesting bit of history relating to several well known families of this section is taken from the Carolina Spartan. Mr. and Mrs. W. N. ANDERSON, their three children and Miss Julia NORRIS returned to their homes at Bethlehem, Tenn., last Tuesday. Only a few of the group of young people that lived at Limestone Springs 1840 to 1850 are left. Miss Julia NORRIS was sister of Col. William NUCKOLLS, once a congressman from this district. John C. CALHOUN, considered Mr. NUCKOLLS one of the wisest and best informed men in statescraft that he had ever met. THE DEAD BODY FOUND The mystery surrounding the finding of the bits of flesh and clothes on the pilot of freight engine in freight No. 81, Wednesday night, has been unraveled. The mangled body of Ben SMALLEY a deaf and dumb boy was found later near Seneca, where the freight had struck the boy after leaving Spartanburg Wednesday night. The boy's father worked in the Westminster cotton mills. It is supposed SMALLEY was not aware of the train's approach as he was deaf and was struck and killed without warning. A MIRACLE An Irish farmer asked a priest what a miracle was, says the Pittsburg Gazette. He gave him a very full explanation, which, however, did not seem to quite satisfy the farmer, who said: Now, do you think, your reverence, you could give me an example of a miracle?" "Well," said his reverence, "walk on before me and I'll see what I can do." As he did so the priest gave him a tremendous kick behind. "Did you feel that?" he asked. "Why wouldn't I feel it?" said the farmer, rubbing the damaged place; "begorra, I did feel it, sure 'nough." "Well," said the priest, "it would be a miracle if you didn't." Caught After 3 Months Absence Walter FLOYD, colored, for whom a warrant was issued some months ago for transporting liquor, was arrested here yesterday after having run away and been lost sight of for several months.
