"The Carolina Spartan" Issue: August 10, 1881 NOTICE All persons having claims against the estate of Richard SPRINGS, deceased, are notified to present the same to the undersigned properly proven. All persons indebted to said estate are requested to pay the same at once. A.R. SPRINGS, Adm'r of Richard SPRINGS, dec. SALE OF PERSONAL PROPERTY WE will sell at public outcry on the 18th of August, at the late residence of Isaac MORGAN, deceased, all the personal property of the late Elizabeth MORGAN, deceased, consisting of 1 cow and calf, 2 Hogs, Household and Kitchen Furniture, and all her interest in the growing crop. Also at the same time and place, the old Homestead of the late Isaac MORGAN, deceased, containing 93 acres of land, more or less, a good one-story house and other necessary out buildings. J.H. MORGAN J.M. MORGAN For a the heirs July 27, 1881 2t The Chicago Inter-Ocean, has an interesting sketch of Belle BOYD, the confederate spy, part of which reads like a circular setting forth a boarding school for girls or a mountain resort. This is the case when the reporter speakes about her being in several engagements and having her clothes perforated with bullets. It states this fact, however, that she is married a second time and settled down into quiet, domestic life, and that the traveling, lecturing Belle BOYDS are all frauds. One anecdote characteristic of Lincoln is told which is good enough to be true. It is said that Belle BOYD became acquainted with the President when she was about Washington and kept up a correspondence with him, when she came across the lines. On one occasion she used paper, having a Confederate flag entwined around with a serpent and this motto written under it: "Don't tread on me, or I'll bite." When Lincoln replied, he cut the design and motto out, erased the "bite" and wrote "bust" in its place and enclosed this to his fair correspondent. NOTICE Is hereby given that we will apply to Geo. W. NICHOLLS, Judge of Probate for Spartanburg County, S.C., on the 2d day of September, 1881, for a final discharge as Executors of the estate of David H. SMITH, deceased. C.C. SMITH S.N. SMITH NOTICE Is hereby given to all persons holding claims against the estate of Sarah A. WEST, deceased, to present them to the undersigned, on or before the 24th day of August, 1881 properly proven. C.C. SMITH Locals: --Professor Charles F. SMITH, Ph.D., and family, returned to Spartanburg Tuesday morning, from Germany. After spending a few weeks here with family and fiends he will go to Williams College, where he is elected to a professorship. --Some flowers are known to possess narcotic principles, but is now believed that a mixture of geranium, citrine and fuschia have a tendency to prevent sleep. A young man had a most beautiful bouquet of these on his counter a few days ago and it is said that they kept him awake nearly a week. Issue: August 17, 1881 Locals: --Mr. W.T. DANIEL, of Landrum's, S.C., has an apple tree that grows in clusters. It seems to be a seedling, ripening in the fall. One limb nine inches long had 22 apples on it, and another, 30 inches in length had 52 well formed apples. --Dr. Manning T. SMITH has located in the Oak Grove neighborhood, and he may be found at the residence of Capt. J.W. WOFFORD. He was a diligent student, and graduated in a first class college. --Mr. J. W. M. ELDER has entered upon his work as colporteur of the American Bible Society in this county. He is a native of York county, and proposes to canvass every neighborhood in Spartanburg. --Major T.H. BOMAR will in a few days point his compass in the direction of Rutherford. He will perhaps cross Lawson's Fork near the mouth of Shoaly Creek and then proceed in the most direct line to Rutherford. Of course this is only a preliminary survey, and other lines will be run. Issue: August 24, 1881 Some thoughtless persons tied a brush to a loose mule and sent him galloping up Main Street Monday afternoon. Of course this did not hurt the mule nor the brush; but some horse might take fright at such a sight and runaway with women and children and do much damage. Never endanger the lives of others with your fun. Free Post Lisa

Hello; I noticed an error in gender on your POPE .html. Lou Murphy is a female, not a male as you referred on this page as "HE." Thought you would like to be correct in all your information.. Your Page is very interesting and informative. I am having a debate with Ms. Murphy CONCERNING JAMES MUSE and Sophia POPE family and records pertaining to their Daughter , Anne aka Amy aka Anna , who married John Tolloson, and the possibility that Sophia and Anne carried Amey aka Amy Veale Pope's given name as their middle name and was called by 'AMY' after their move to S. C... Lou and Dr James Reid are finding fault in the originality of JAMES MUSE'S "WILL", John Morrison's conveyance of the MUSE'S ESTATE to "AMY [aka] Anne] AND DANIEL MUSE, ORPHANS". The fact that in the Morrison conveyance deed that Thomas Muse was said to be JOHN MUSE'S SON not JAMES MUSE'S son, now in your site I find that Thomas MUSE SR. was the father of James and John Muse, and Thomas Muse therefore this THOMAS MUSE IN THE MORRISON CONVEYANCE DEED could very well have been , Thomas Muse, James Muse sr.'s brother not son...the uncle of these young people. Also, I noted in your correction of Humphrey Pope sr by Lou Murphy that Humphrey Pope jr. had married a widow of a MORRISON, one Mary unknown Morrison {2. Humphrey II Pope (Humphrey 1) born ca. 1674. He married twice. He married Amy Veale. Amy was the daughter of Maurice [Morris ? emc} Vele Veale and Dorothy (Unknown) Veale. He married Mary (Unknown) Morrison. 1704 - Humphrey makes deed to his brother John, jointly with his wife, Amey. Wm & Mary Quarterly, Series 1, 13:280-284. ] [1734 - Humphrey Pope II's "Will". 1734 - Humphrey Pope's will - dated 10 Jan 1732, recorded 29 Oct 1734: Names dau. Ann Conditt, dau. Sophia Muse, son Humphrey, dau. Sarah Pope, dau. Mary Muse, dau. Mary Pope, "to my wife's daughter, Elizabeth Morrison; wife Mary and four youngest children; wife, coz. Daniel McCarty (son of Humphrey's sister Elizabeth) and Peter Jett exors." (Westmoreland Wills, Book 8)] So, this JOHN MORRISON could have been SOPHIA POPE MUSE'S step uncle or brother who was managing her affairs,? . The legal instruments I am basing my theory of "AMY" being Sophia's and Anne Muse's middle name is the fact Sophia Pope Muse's mother was AMEY aka AMY VEALE POPE plus, Tolloson and Muse marriage dispute, John Morrison's conveyance deed to the MUSE Orphans. Thanks to Lou, I have orginal copies of all. Plus, now, I know that Humphrey Pope II was married to a widow of a Morrison, his second wife, MARY and included her children in his "Will". therefore this shows how closely knit the POPEs, VEALEs, MUSES and MORRISONS were related. regards; Evelyn Crocker Tolloson / Muse / Bryant/ Crocker

"The Carolina Spartan" Issue: September 1, 1880 Mr. L.A. MILLS has some of the finest pigs we have ever seen in Spartanburg. They are thorough bred Berkshires. Mr. MILLS has shown great zeal in bringing improved stock to this county. He will sell a pair or two of these pigs for $12.00, not one third of the amount paid for the original pair he bought. The Yankee is not the only individual that can adroitly use the pocket knife. Mr. B. K. O'SHIELDS, living near Friendship Church in this County sent to the Spartan office a watch chain, whittled out of chincapin wood, which shows considerable ingenuity. One part of the chain consists of four bars in which a ball is cut. The links are about one inch long and are well cut. Wellford: Dr. H.E. DeBARD's dwelling house was burned down one night last week. Some colored persons going from church discovered the flames and aroused the family, but it was too late to save everything of value. The fire originated in the room where the cooking stove was. TOMATOES Mr. Editor:--You recently said that the pronunciation of this word was in some way a shibboleth of the pronouncer's age. Here in New York City the universal pronunciation so far as my observation goes is to-may'-toes. I pronounce it to-mah'-toes. Which of these is nearest eighty? New York, 28 Aug., '80. Corsair. From the above it will be seen that our Institute is attracting attention even in New York. It was jocularly said by Professor JOYNES in his admirable lectures on the English language that as this word was pronounced in three different ways, the age of the person might be approximated by the method of pronunciation. The word being Spanish the "a" in the second syllable was at first pronounced like the word awe. The next pronunciation was like the syllable ah. The last like "a" in fate. The first pronunciation indicates 80 years; the second, 50; the third "sweet sixteen," one of whom the Editor of the Spartan is which. He would also add that the dark age is indicated by saying "tomattusses." Issue: September 8, 1880 W.M. McCRAVY, assisted by some neighbors, captured in Tyger River near Burnt Factory, a Sturgeon, last Monday, weighing 185 pounds,--7 feet 7 inches long and 3 feet 4 inches in girth. Some supposed that this fish came up the country to spend the summer. He like all low country people was making for the S. & A. Road. Saturday the 21st of August, Richard BOMAR of Limestone Springs was married to Miss Emma BROWN. They stole a march on their young friends and it was not known for a week that they were married. free post Lisa

My grandmother was Minnie Inez Pruitt, the youngest of 10 children born to Tillman M. Pruitt, b. in Spartanburg S.C.in 1833 and Martha A. McCain Pruitt. He was the s/o William Pruitt., b. in SC in 1807 and wife (UNK maiden name). He had a brother, Calvin and a half-brother by the name of Zilmon. Zilmon's mother was UNK Daskey. William was the s/o Benjamin Pruitt,b. in SC, prior to 1893 and Judah UNK. Benjamin was the s/o Richard Pruitt, b. in 1748 in Luxenbury VA and Francis (Fannie) Sandbridge. Richard was the s/o William, b. between 1725-1730 in Halifax, VA and Judith Dudley. William was the s/o Thomas Pruett, Sr., b.in 1693 in Henrico County, VA and wife Mary Magdalene (Chastain) Ducray. Thomas, Sr. was the s/o Henry Pruett/Prewitt,Sr. ,b.in York Co., Va in 1954 and Rebecca Ann Dabbs/Dobbs. Henry was the s/o Thomas Prewett who was born in Eng.in 1616 and UNK wife, See note on Immigrant ancestor: "Early virginia immigrants, by G.C. Greer, Clerk of the VA State Land Office, contains a list of some 25,000 persons who came to Virginia from 1623 to 1666, together with the patentee or person who brought them over. In this list is : Thomas Prewitt, 1636, by Joane Bennet, to Charles River Country. On May 6, 1636, Joane Bennett, widow, received 450 acres in Charles River Co., VA. upon the new Poqueson River, east towards the bays, west into the woods, north up9on the Pinye Swamp (River) and south upon Robert Thrasher. 50 acres due for trasfer of 8 persons: Ann Winter, John Roote, Jon Marshall, Thomas Prewitt, Andrew Chant, Jon Morris, and Pole Carplights. At frist, land could only be had by paying the passage of settlers too poor to pay their own; the man who paid the transportation cost got 50 acres of land for each person brought to Virginia. The transported person usually had to spend 5 years in working out the costs of his passage, but at the end of that time, he or she also received 50 acres of land. On June 2, 1636, Thomas Privett was granted 50 acres of land in Charles river Co., VA, being a neck of ground at the New Poqueson, west upon William Clarke a creek, then east upon Thomas Harwood a creek, The said 50 acres of land being due unto him the said Thomas Privett for the transportation of one servant into this colony. This seems strange that an indentured servant would be transporting an indentured servant to do his work for him." In spite of all this info, I am still seeking info on the wives, siblings, spouses, etc. of these men. I need documentation, if available. Thanks for any help! Lou, I finally recieved the copies you send me, and I do humbly eat "Crow" concerning the statement 16 or married, but , the way I interput it here is Annebarbray had to be married, not that she was under the age of 16, I interrupted that William had to be of age 16 to inheit his part, and of coarse, Sophia Pope Runnel was already married and had a male to oversee her. share.... It has just been in the 20th century , that women could own anything in her name....or have credit accounts.... BY the way, I am sending this to the SCSPARTA-L AS there will be many interested in this post... By the way, Lou to refresh your memory, it was a woman who wrote me concerning ANNE MUSE who she thought was married to her Wm somebody, when she found my Family Tree on Worldwide Roots....which started our debate..... Read between your statements.... > To Evelyn Crocker and James Reid. > > James, many thanks for sending me the issue of "Upper South Carolina Gen > & Hist" with the articles you wrote. I've been in a discussion (i.e., > argument) with your cousin, Evelyn Crocker, regarding James Muse SR's > will. She insists that my transcription of James SR's will is wrong, > because it differs from yours. I did not state that your copy of James Muse's Will was incorrect, I did state that I didn't believe it was in the "Will" because, James Reid had plave the entire "Will" in his article, but, after re-reading his article , he did state he left some minor things out which he felt was not important for genelogy purposes, Which must have been the state concerniong Annebarbary, Sophia Muse Runnel and Wm Muse Seal's required condition to receive their part of the ESTATE. {Like you, I feel this was very important statement, because it shows ANNEBARBARY is not married but, possibe was 16, but Wm. Seals Muse was under 16. Sophia being married wasn't included in the condition...} > Evelyn, my copy of James Muse SR's will is from the NC Archives. It so > happens that I'm the person who furnished a copy of the will to Dr. > Reid back in 2000, at his request. . So he has the very same copy that > I have. That is nice, I thank you for my copy, but, I did not need you to annotie it for me as I have been reseaching old legal records for some time, and I make my own conclusions. And, I have been depending on James Reid for many years ow also, and he is quite willing to double check his work when others ask him to do so... > James, I'm looking at your transcription of James Muse's will on page 13 > of "Upper South Carolina Genealogy & History". After the words > "...death or decease of my wife" there's a period. The phrase "deliver > to them at the age of sixteen or marriage", should follow the word > "wife", but those words were inadvertently left out. See my conclusion on this in my opening statement..... > Evelyn, John Morrison's Conveyance on page 15 simply tells us that > Daniel Muse was still under 14 years old in 1762, as was the unknown > "Amy". James does not state that the "deceased Amy" is actually > Sophia. He says that "one would expect" that to be the case. He's > expressing a possibility, not stating a fact. Lou, You are turning the wording of the conveyance around to suit your self, my dear> :). It stateS DANIEL WAS STILL UNDER THE AGE OF FOURTEEN, NOT AMY, who I still content was ANNE due to the SLAVE BVelindas being mentioned, and I contend that the other AMY was either mother or grandmother. Where do you get that there were THREE AMY's??? I count only two, the one who was deceased and the one who witnessed was the same in the CONVEYANCE.... > Of course we now have the evidence that by 1762, James Muse's widow had > married John Morrison, & in 1792, as "Sophia MORRISON of Fairfield Co > SC", she made two separate slave deeds to her daughter Lydia Seale. > That document alone is irrefutable evidence that Sophia MORRISON is > the same person as SOPHIA MUSE, James Sr's widow. This is the first I have heard of these records, I am now asking James Reid to to an article in the Upper Piedmont Genealogy Magizine on them.. > James also says in his comments that "it is possible, and likely, that > the orphan "Amy" Muse in this deed is "Anne" Muse" , because the slave > Bellinda, who Morrison conveyed in 1762 to Thomas Muse, was > probably the same slave that James SR bequeathed to his daughter Anne. > Pleaser note that James uses the word "Possible" and "likely" -- again, > he is not stating a fact. Evelyn Crocker wrote; I shall continue to content that SOPHIA POPE MUSE had a middle name of AMY as did her daughter, ANNE until you show me proof they did not because, the more I disuss this issue and look at the whole family picture that was why JOHN MORRISON dicatated it in his conveynce of the MUSE ESTATE... The name, AMY, showed up in the TOLLOSON / MUSE DIVORCE FILES and THOMAS MUSE acknowledged an ANNA , or perhaps it should have correctly been spelled ANNE. In our earlier discussion concerning who Amy Toloson was on the MUSE FAMILY query board on genealogy .com and SCSparta-L I was the one who suggested the "M" might be two "NN"s spelling "ANNY" but in the orginial copies I received this week from Lou, I can see very well the it was a "m" NOT DOUBLE "n" so the name was clearly "AMY". Because, SOPHIA POPE MUSE sr.'s MOTHER'S given name was AMY VEALE POPE. So, one daughter was given the mother's name SOPIA POPE and another was given ANNE AMY and where LIDDIE and ANNABARBARY came from I can not say but it was from old family names , YOU CAN BET ON IT... > Warm regards, Lou
Lisa-the Natural Resources Conservation Service has old aerial photographs, probably back into the 1930's.If not in the office they can tell you how to order them from the Governments National photographic center. Of even greater potential use would be old 1940-1960 soils maps. Years ago the soil mappers denoted cemetaries, they do not do this on modern maps. Should be listed in the phone book as USDA Service Center under the US Gov't heading. PS am still working on sorting the Williamson-Layton connection out. "The Carolina Spartan" Issue: July 7, 1880 SERIOUS ACCIDENT-Yesterday morning the Misses Lizzie and Carie McMAHAN and Miss Lidi LONG, accompanied by Ed. McCONNEL and Arthur LONG, started in a one horse spring wagon for Chick Springs. When nearing the latter place, the braching of the harness broke and the horse becoming frightened started to run. In endeavoring to check him, he was drawn to the side of the road and the sudden turn of the wagon threw Miss Lizzie McMAHAN was quite badly bruised and jarred by the fall and McCONNEL had a large gash cut in his head and his face badly bruised. The horse broke loose from the wagon, thus, doubtless saving the other occupants from injury. Dr. WESTMORELAND at Greers was sent for and proceeded at once to the Springs. Last night it was stated that the wounded were getting along well and the Doctor reported their injuries not serious. Mr. Moses WAKEFIELD, living near Reidville, is now about 76 years old. He is able now to plow ten hours a day and not only able, but willing. He makes a full haul in the field. It is said the female street walkers are often to be seen at night in this place. We would suggest that it would be well to pass an ordinance to arrest all women caught on the streets alone after a stated hour at night. A meeting will be held in the Court House tonight (Wednesday) for the purpose of re-organizing the Spartan Rifles. All interested citizens and old members of the Morgan and Spartan Rifles are invited to attend. With the co-operation of the citizens and Capt. BACON, the Spartan Rifles will once more be Spartanburg's pride and the ladies pet. Remember the hour and come out and give the boys a Hancock "send off", for they will repay you for your trouble at Cowpens, King's Mountain and wherever they may be needed. Gaffney: Henry SARRATT, who was wounded by a knife-blade penetrating the skull last spring, is in a pitiable condition. He is partly paralyzed unable to talk and his mind is much enfeebled. Cornelius COLE, a colored person, not having the fear of license laws revenue officers before his eyes, concluded to contribute to the campaign by the sale of whiskey every day in the week. He was overtaken Monday and turned over to the tender mercies of the revenue officers, and when they get through with him, our civil court will dispose of his case. An anonymous communication has been received from Greer's in regard to the want and destitution of Mrs. BURTON whose house was burned. She lost everything. Any help would be timely and thankfully received. There are twenty men living within three miles of the ashes of her house that could supply her with clothing and rebuild her house and not miss it. Will they do it? Issue: July 14, 1880 Last Thursday several Negroes arrested one GOODWINE, an ex-convict, in the field of Mr. VAUGHN near Glendale, and said their intention was to lynch him. GOODWINE had been very cruel to his wife, and he was indicted for assaulting her. The case had been thrown out of court, and the relatives of the woman concluded to take the law in their own hands. Mr. VAUGHN saw them take the Negro from the field, but nothing is known as to the result. It is reported that he escaped unhurt. Issue: July 21, 1880 List of Letters Remaining unclaimed in the Post-office at Spartanburg, S.C., July 17, 1880: Alfred BROOKS, Agnes BOYD, J.W. HARRIS, Eliza HENDRIX, W.C. HEWETT, W.E. HOWELL, Warren JONES, Tennessee LINDER, Henry MOSELY, M.T. MILES, H.A. LUBY, Thomason WHITSELL, Judy WHITESIDE. We learn that Mrs. Perry JACKSON was severely bit by a dog last week. We sympathize with her very much, and hope that she may soon recover. Mr. G.O. FIKE near Cherokee Springs killed a rattlesnake Monday 3 feet 10 inches long with 10 rattles-The largest of the kind seen in that community for years. Issue: July 28, 1880 List of Letters: Remaining letters in Post office, July 17, 1880 Alexander BASS, D.B. WHEELER, E. BRONTON, Jane HUFFINE, Sallie MAGINSON, Liezer JACKSON. July 24, 1880 J.G. BROWN, Pearla LIPSCOMB, Frank MILLER, Fannie NORTON - 2, Jane REEVES, E.D. SMITH, E.C. SMITH. Mr. D.I. TWITTY was severely hurt by being thrown from a buggy while on his way to Rutherford Court last week. The buggy ran over a stump, which caused the accident. A party of young men left in wagons for the mountains yesterday. Elisah BOMAR, Irvine TWITTY, James BOYD, Edwin BOBO, W.B. MONTGOMERY, Rutledge HENNEMAN, C.W. ZIMMERMAN, and Z.
