MITCHELL said he swapped for the horse and described the man he traded with, which description suits the farther of Frank BOLTON. The accused gave bond to appear in court. Some railroad hands, all colored, gathered at a house of prostitution in town Saturday night, and had a lively time. Four of them were cut and Dennis JETER was shot in the middle of the forehead by Lum PETTY. The bullet meandered around the skull bone for awhile and finally made and exit on the top of his head. It was very much damaged-that is the bullet and not the head. "Red Mose" informed the authorities of the row, and Monday Ira RICHARDS, met him out of town and opened fire on him for telling. Would it [cut off] MARRIED: DOBSON-TAPP-On Sunday, the 7th of October, by J.B. WILLIAMSON, N.P., Mr. B. DOBSON to Mrs. Eliza TAPP; both of Spartanburg County. Issue: October 17, 1883 J. Nicholls, Esq., Probate Judge of Spartanburg County, State of South Carolina, on Thursday, the 22d of November, next, for a final discharge as Administrator of the estate of James HUSKEY, deceased. W.A. HUSKEY Administrator Issue: October 31, 1883 Miss Nannie HORNE, a good looking girl of 17 years, left Greenville in company with a member of the circus. The father telegraphed to Atlanta to the chief of police, who arrested and returned her to Greenville. She says she will run away again. Poor girl! Gabe MOORE is doing the wood work on the houses of Dr. Fleming and Col. Walker, and he says that the wood will be there in good shape, especially the door and window frames, when the bricks have moldered away. Mr. William POSEY has lost his fine iron grey horse from disease of some sort. All lovers of the horse will sympathize with Mr. POSEY. It is not the financial loss that hurts in such cases, but it is almost like losing one of the family for a favorite horse to die. Col. T.J. MOORE's fine bull calf that was bitten by a dog some time ago, died recently. It showed all signs of hydrophobia before dying. The colt bitten at the same time seems well and hearty. The Colonel received by mail an offer of $100 for this calf the very day it died. Don't forget to attend the sale of the Property of Estate of W. Wash THOMPSON, next Monday 5th. Furniture can be seen at the old stand under Merchants Hotel after Thursday. Edwin S. BOBO has returned from Montana where he has been since last spring. >From his appearance it is a good place to live, as he looks the very picture of health. He thinks the winters there too long for him. People are housed for five or six months of the year, and make no pretensions to work. . . He prefers the old fields near this place which were cleared and worn *** by his great grandfather, Anthony FOSTER, nearly a hundred years ago. In Montana he was near Radersburg with W.L. COPELAND, who visited us last winter. He left him in good health and enjoying himself in his mountain home. free post Lisa

    1. [SCSPARTA] "Carolina Spartan" Issues: September, 1883
    2. "Carolina Spartan" Issue: September 5, 1883 Maj. Jno. A. LEE is putting up a wind mill near his residence for the purpose of pumping water for domestic use. If he succeeds others may try the same plan. The reunion at Burnt Factory on Saturday was a pleasant occasion. About 200 persons were present and they had a nice picnic and speeches and a good time generally. There were 14 survivors of the Cross Anchor Company present and they organized a survivors association with F.N. WALKER as President and Z.T. BOBO of Union, as Secretary. They meet again next year at the same place. Rev. Mr. WOODWARD, wife and two daughters and Mrs. F.C. WOODWARD reached Spartanburg last Saturday. Mr. WOODWARD and family came from Petersburg and will make this place their home. Two of the Misses WOODWARD will be associated with Miss Carson in the High School for Girls at the Female Academy building. Capt. W.L. BRAGG and his daughter Miss Genie, are visiting their relatives Col. EVINS and Geo. W. NICHOLLS, Esq. Capt. BRAGG is a leading lawyer of Montgomery Ala., and is now Chairman of the Railroad Commission of his State. Last Sunday Mr. W.C. HEWITT and Miss Alice HEWITT, of the Windsor House, were married in the city of Greenville. Issue: September 12, 1883 Dr. J.L. WOFFORD's family of Cherokee has moved to town for the purpose of educating their children. They have rooms in one of Capt. GWYNN's houses on Main street. Jim MASSEY, a colored United States witness attending the court at Greenville, was killed last Saturday night. He and several other Negroes visited a house of infamy kept by a white woman named SPROUSE, and they carried a supply of whiskey with them. A row occurred and it seems that MASSEY was put to flight. Next morning his body was found stiff and dead, severely cut on the breast and side. He went from Spartanburg county, near Reidville. It will be remembered that in a street fight at Hendersonville, N.C., about a year ago, Sam and John BRITTON were making an assault on Jim FANNING, when, by accident, they shot Sam CUNNINGHAM, who was looking on at a considerable distance, which wound caused his death. They were tried at the recent term of court and found guilty of manslaughter. Sam BRITTON was sent to the penitentiary for seven years and John for two. In Brevard last week a prisoner was found guilty of horse-stealing. He was sentenced to ten years but in consideration of his delicate health the judge reduced his time to six. The old North State is not very lenient towards her criminals. A vigilance committee was formed at the old Bridge Place on Thickety [Union County] for the purpose of repressing the unlawful whiskey traffic. The following members are enrolled: Samuel JEFFRIES, A.A. SARRATT, J.C. FOWLER, T.M. LITTLEJOHN, Dr. M.J. WALKER, J.B.T. SCOTT, Thomson ROBBS, James OSMENT, J.T. MOREHEAD, John FOSTER, S.S. WALKER, James WALKER, William JEFFERIES, John R. JEFFERIES, J.H. SPEARS, T.A. GOFORTH, Thomas SCOTT. A committee was appointed to wait on Goode & Estes, distillers near Salem Church. After an interview these men promised to abandon the business. Issue: September 29, 1883 The little son of R.M. OTTS was thrown from a mule last week and his arm was broken. If any reader of the SPARTAN has an old revolutionary story called "Herbert Tracy, or the Legend of the Black Rangers," he will confer a favor by sending it to this office. John C. McDOWELL had the misfortune to break his leg just above the ankle Monday morning the 10th inst. He had gone to a neighbor's house and a dog attacked him and he jumped over the fence to escape, and his foot struck a rock which caused the injury. D.H. GRAMBLING & Sons are building a merchant mill on Thickety near the ford at their place. This is a much needed enterprise in that neighborhood. H. PARRIS, Esq., of Martinsville, informs us that Nathan PARRIS a very industrious and respectable farmer in the Buck Creek neighborhood, has been in bad health for several months. Lately his mind has given way somewhat, and he left home last Friday and has not been heard of since. His friends are very anxious about him, and information will be thankfully received. Monday we learned that Mr. PARRIS was found in the woods near home, his mind still unsettled. MARRIED: --FOSTER-DENSON-On Thursday evening the 13th instant, by Rev. J.B. Campbell, Mr. J. H. FOSTER and Miss Minnie DENSON. --HORTON-ELDER-On Tuesday, 11th instant, by R. Earle Johnson, N.P., James Irving HORTON and Miss Mary Ann ELDER, near Parris' Ford. --EDWARDS-TURNER-By James L. 1. [SCSPARTA] "Carolina Spartan" Issues: August, 1883
    2. "Carolina Spartan" Issue: August 1, 1883 COURT OF PROBATE: Whereas Thomas GOSSETT, has filed his petition in the office of the Judge of the Probate Court for Spartanburg county, praying that letters of Administration, be granted him on all and singular the goods and chattels, rights and credits of Cortes E. BURCH, deceased. COURT OF PROBATE: Whereas F.M. TRIMMIER, Clerk of the Court, for Spartanburg county, has filed his petition in the office of the Judge of Probate Court for Spartanburg County, praying that Letters of Administration be granted him on all and singular the goods and chattels, rights and credits of Wm. H. WALKER, deceased. Mr. James CLEMENT, near Boiling Springs, had the misfortune to lose his kitchen and contents by fire last week. R.L. CROUSE, of King's Mountain, N.C., section master on the Air-Line at Cowpens, died Monday night the 23d instant. He was sick twelve days with typhoid fever. He was an excellent young man, and was most highly esteemed by all who knew him. Dock MORGAN, white, was up before the City Council last week for selling whiskey. The proof was plain against him and he was fined $25 or 30 days imprisonment. During the trial he made a statement under oath, for which he was bound over on the next criminal court to answer for perjury. Mrs. L.C. EZELL, being in bad health, has gone to Plainville, Ga., to try the virtues of limestone water for a few weeks. J.L. POOLE, J.K. BROCKMAN, Clem RUSSELL, and James McGOWAN, cadets from this county, have returned home to enjoy their vacation. Dr. C.B. STONE, with his wife and daughter, from Plantersville, Texas, is visiting his mother. Lizzie, the two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. BECKER, broke her arm near the elbow last Saturday. She was attempting to climb on the mantelpiece and fell. Issue: August 8, 1883 For of our young men drove all the way from Hendersonville in buggies last Saturday. The distance by the dirt road is about 50 miles. They got in about 5 p.m., make the drive in nine hours. So much for fast horses. B.D. BOYD of Owensboro, Ky., is visiting his father, Dr. J.J. BOYD and his brothers. Col. J.H. EVINS, his wife and two children and Capt. S.C. MEANS and wife leave for Louisville today, Tuesday. They will be joined by a party from Greenville. Last week Mrs. A.J. DANIEL and her son A.C. DANIEL and family came very near to being poisoned. At breakfast Mr. DANIEL was the first to appear, and he received from his mother the first cup of coffee. On tasting he perceived there was something wrong, and other members of the family then tasted and pronounced it unfit to drink. In a short time Mr. Daniel who had swallowed a little became quite sick. The coffee was poured into a slop tub where there were some crusts of bread. Two dogs came in and ate the bread, and they were thrown into convulsions. Mrs. DANIEL had a vial of strychnine about the house, and on the search for the same, it could not be found. There is strong reason for believing the coffee was poisoned with the strychnine. Prof. DuPRE has some of the coffee and will make a test for poison this week. Ramson BROWN and Clebe BREWSTER, colored, have been arrested on suspicion. DISAPPOINTED AND HOMESICK EMIGRANTS The South Carolina colony that left the Cannon's Camp Ground neighborhood, in the fall of 1882, has located on Brinalee Mountains, in Blount County, Ala., 7 miles from Blountsville, the county seat. A few of the colony have bought land, the majority have not. One half of the colony are now preparing to return to their native homes in Spartanburg. The soil here is a light, sandy grey, not adapted to wheat, cotton or clover. This county is very poorly watered, but few lasting springs, no railroad facilities, no water powers for manufactures and everything has a downward tendency. Mr. Henry TURNER paid us a visit, but returned to his home without buying land. He likes Spartanburg the best. I would advise all intending to come to this country, to come and see before selling their homes in Spartanburg. H.J. FITZGERALD, Summit, P.O. August 4, 1883 Issue: August 15, 1883 SHERIFF'S SALE: . . . to highest bidder at public outcry . . .All the right, title and interest of W.B. COLLINS, deceased, will present the same, properly proven, to the undersigned, on or before Tuesday, the 21st day of August, 1883. NICHOLLS, Judge of Probate Court for Spartanburg county, S.C., on the 31st day of August for a final discharge as Administrator of the estate of Julius C. WHITE, deceased. Wm. WHITE Administrator of Julius C. WHITE, dec'd. He also states that Mr. KEITH of N.C., was married Sunday at the residence of Captain Thomas W. WINGO, of Duncan's to Miss BRIGGS, daughter of Lafayette BRIGGS of Union. Mr. MILLER thinks the rest of the single railroad men will soon fall in line and march to the music of the marriage bells, or flat irons, as the case may be. Issue: August 29, 1883 Dr. J.M.
