    1. [SCSPARTA] "Carolina Spartan" Issue: January 2 & 16, 1884
    2. "Carolina Spartan" Issue: January 2, 1884 Albert JACKSON, who has been acting as porter and man of all work for several of our merchants in the past, will leave for Jacksonville, Fla., this week, where he will go into a hotel. He has always been faithful and attentive to his business here. Chas. E. WALKER, Esq., of Owensboro, Ky., visited relations here last week. He now speaks of moving to Louisville. Sheriff BLASSINGAME and L.C. CANNON, with their families, visited friends and relations in Colleton County last week. MARRIED: --By Rev. L. C. Ezell, at his residence, December 9th, 1883, Mr. W.F. O'SHIELDS to Miss L.C. WOODWARD, both of Spartanburg. --By the same, December 12th, in Cross Keys township, at the residence of Mrs. Paulina BURNETT, the bride's mother, Mr. A.J. BAILEY to Miss Lou BURNETT. --By the same December 16th, at the residence of S.J. WALDRIP, the bride's father, Mr. Jas. D. BURNETT to Miss Ellen D. WALDRIP, both of Union County. --By the same, December 20th, at the residence of Dr. B. F. KILGORE, the bride's father, Miss Annie V. KILGORE to Mr. A.B. STALWORTH, of Edgefield. --On December 23d, by J.W. Stribling, Esq., Mr. Warren FARMER to Miss Fannie MORGAN, all of Spartanburg County. --At the Baptist Church, in Gaffney City by the Rev. C.T. Scaife the Hon. B.Y. RAYLE of Winston, N.C., and Mrs. S.C. CAMP, of Gaffney City. --Also on same day, at the residence of Mr. Geo. W. Bonner, by Rev. C.T. Scaife, Mr. N.C. SNEED of Gaffney City and Miss Mary BONNER, of Spartanburg county. --On Dec. 23rd 1883 by Rev. T.V. Gowan, Mr. E.K. CARVER and Miss K.U.O. PEACE, all of Spartanburg Co. S.C. We understand that Julius SEXTON, an aged colored man, left Reidville, two weeks ago to make a visit to his future home, with a son, near Sandy Flat, in Greenville county. He has been a citizen of Reidville for several years since the war, has sustained a good character for sobriety, truth, honesty and industry, has always voted the democratic ticket. We are glad to know that the citizens were kind to him on leaving, presenting him with a suit of clothes and some money. May he find friends in his new home. [top cut off] . . .Another shooting scrape took place in this county at Pelham. William COOPER and John JONES, both white, had a sort of family quarrel that they had been nursing for some time. In order to keep this quarrel in good healthy condition they took on some whiskey as a stimulant the day before Christmas. JONES, who is a Greenville county man, bought an ax handle and it is said he threatened to use it on COOPER. He came up on him and fired off his ax handle striking COOPER on the hand bruising it very much, whereupon COOPER pulled from hip pocket the handy pistol and opened on the Greenville county man. One ball entered the groin, and the other the neck. JONES's condition was considered very critical Friday, and he may be dead before this time. The shooting took place on the Spartanburg side of the county line. Issue: January 16, 1884 John B. O'N. [sic] BOWMAN, has come to Spartanburg to remain. He is a son of Jno. G. BOWMAN of the "Temperance Advocate" published in Columbia, before the war. Mr. BOWMAN's business is house painting, paperhanging and glazing. There is a good opening here for him, and we hope he will do well. At present he may be found at the Central Hotel. J.H. McCLIMONS and family of Reidville, have just left for Sulphur Springs, Texas. He has spent a year here with friends and relatives. As Michael MOORE, son of Dr. A.L. MOORE of Wellford, was going into the house from the front last Monday, a bullet struck him in the back of the neck and lodged somewhere about the jaw bone. Two young men had been out hunting and they were South of the Doctor's house, fully a fourth of a mile away. One of them, Sam HAMMOND had a Remington rifle and he fired it at a frozen turnip sticking out of the ground. He thinks it probable from the direction he fired that the ball struck the turnip and glanced upward and struck Mr. MOORE. It is a serious wound, but not considered dangerous at this time. Dr. J.N. MOORE, of this place, was called out to see him. The ball has not been taken out yet. We hope a speedy recovery for him. W.J. DUNCAN and family and Mr. HAMILTON and family, of Gaffney City, have left for Paris, Texas. Michael MOORE who was severely shot in the neck is improving slowly. The ball has not been located yet. Captain J.W. HOLTZCLAW had both bones of his leg broken last week just above the ankle. He was passing the store of Cannon & Long, and Mr. EVINS a clerk in that house was outside with snow balls ready for a little fun. He and the Captain got into a friendly scuffle which ended in the accident. MARRIED: --December 25th 1883, by Rev. W. Hardin, assisted by Rev. A.J. Hines, Mr. W.R. GILLIAM and Miss Kate GREGORY, near Cross Keys, Union county, S.C. --At Wellford on the 1st instant, by the Rev. R.H. Reid, Mr. J.T. TURNER to Miss Tallulah E. COAN. --On Oct. 20th, 1883, by the Rev. J.T. McElhenny, Mr. Milow GILBERT to Miss Annie WILLIS, both of Spartanburg, S.C. free post Lisa

    1. [SCSPARTA] "Carolina Spartan" Issues: December, 1883
    2. "Carolina Spartan" Issue: December 12, 1883 A.P.H. WALKER, of Marshal, Missouri, is on a visit to his old house. He is growing very much like his father in appearance. His many friends are glad of the opportunity of seeing him. Issue: December 26, 1883 Rumor had it on our streets that a man by the name of RODGERS undertook the kidnapping of the COOLEDGE children. The latest information is that after working the case a few weeks he gave it up, and then BURNS undertook to engineer it himself. It is said that the three who ran away to kidnap another day, "counted cross ties" in the direction of the South Carolina line at the rate of 500 a minute. Woodruff-Mr. Editor:--You doubtless ere this have heard of the misfortune that befell me on the night of the 11th of December. My dwelling which was nearly complete and which I expected to occupy in a few days, was entirely destroyed by fire. Its origin so far is a mystery. I take this opportunity of thanking my friends of Woodruff and surrounding country for their noble generosity, in this my time of need. All came with words of sympathy and open purses. Those that could not give money, gave lumber or work. Denominational differences were thrown aside and all came with helping hand and Christian like spirit to assist the distressed and to help bear my burden. And today my heart goes out to them with a gratitude which words cannot express. My humble prayer is that the God in whom we all trust and who is able to bestow such blessing as we need, may bless them all. R.H. McAULAY. Our usually quiet town [King's Mountain] was thrown into a fever of excitement last night by an attempt on the part of a gang of villainouis looking men to kidnap the children of Cap. Geo. E. COOLEDGE superintendent of King's Mountain gold mine. It will be remembered that Capt. COOLEDGE has a suit pending in the courts against Emma D. COOLEDGE, his wife, for divorce, and sometime ago in a suit for the custody of the children, tried before Judge Gilmer at Chambers in the city of Charlotte, the Judge gave the children to Capt. COOLEDGE, and it is presumed that our town is indebted to Mrs. C. for the trouble of last night, and she has been making every effort in her power for some time past to get possession of the children. . . . The house of Mrs. Cooledge was soon afterward surrounded and four of the gang were captured. A preliminary trial was had to day before A.V. FALLS Esqs., and one of the party gave evidence for the State. His name is C.O. KIMBRELL and hails from Spartanburg. The names of the men sent up are Frank BURNS, J.L. McCALL, and W.J. PARKS. They are a murderous looking set. If there are any others, let them come on, we are ready.-Charlotte Observer. 1. [SCSPARTA] John Timmons born 1789 in SC
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Timmons Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/EgB.2ACI/2687 Message Board Post: 1790 Timmons in South Carolina The best I can tell, there were 11 Timmons families in South Carolina for the 1790 census. I'm assuming that these census records are correct and they didn't miss anybody. The 1790 census only shows the name of the head-of-household, number of males over 16, number of males under 16, number of females, & number of slaves. We have the following: #1. Abner Timmons, 1 male over 16, 3 females. Spartenburg area. #2. Sam Timmons, 2 males over 16, 1 male under 16, 5 females, 2 slaves, Spartenburg area. #3. Moses Timmons, 2 males over 16, 7 females, 13 slaves, Spartenburg area. #4. Wm Timmons, 1 male over 16, Spartenburg area. #5. John Timmons, 3 males over 16, 3 males under 16, 4 females, 6 slaves. Prince Frederick's Parish. #6. James Timmons, 1 male over 16, 2 females, 1 slave, Prince Frederick's Parish. #7. Levi Timmons, 1 male over 16, 3 females, Prince Fredrick's Parish. #8. Jno Timmons, 1 male over 16, 1 female, 13 slaves. Beaufort area. #9. Lewis Timmons, 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, 2 females, 2 slaves. Charleston area. #10. Samuel Timmons, 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, 2 females, 7 slaves. Charleston area. #11. William Timmons, 2 males over 16, 1 male under 16, 2 females, Prince George Parish. The 1850 census for Tippah County, Mississippi shows our John Timmons to have been 61 years old or born in 1789. Assuming this is correct, he would have been 1 year old in 1790 or under 16. Only 5 of these 11 Timmons families show a male under 16 on the 1790 census for South Carolina. #2. Sam Timmons had 1 male under 16 in the Spartenburg area. # 5. John Timmons had 3 males under 16 in Prince Frederick's Parish. #9. Lewis Timmons had 1 male under 16 in the Charleston area. #10. Samuel Timmons had 1 male under 16 in the Charleston area. #11. William Timmons had 1 male under 16 in Prince George Parish. We end up with, 1 male under 16 in the Spartenburg area, 2 males under 16 in the Charleston area, 1 male under 16 in Prince George Parish and 3 males under 16 in Prince Frederick's Parish with the 3 males under 16 in Prince Frederick's parish being in the same family. That of John Timmons. Spartenburg is in the northwest corner of South Carolina. Charleston is in southeastern South Carolina on the coast and is a Port City. Prince Frederick's Parish & Prince George Parish were in the Georgetown District which was in northeastern South Carolina. Present day Timmonsville and Florence & Marion Counties would have been in the old Georgetown District. Assuming again that these census records are correct and no Timmons family was missed by the census, Our John Timmons born in 1789 was born either in the Spartenburg area, Charleston area or the Timmonsville area and his father was either Sam Timmons, John Timmons, Lewis Timmons, Samuel Timmons or William Timmons. Not having enoug! h information at this time, I couldn't say which of the three areas he was born in nor which of the five Timmons was his father. I would say the law of probabilities would, I think, indicate the Timmonsville area because there were three males under 16 in the family of John Timmons and the fact that our John Timmons had the same name as head-of-household possibly making him John Timmons, Jr.

Does anyone know, and I'm not sure anyone can answer this question, if the Richardson family that has been recently mentioned in the Spartanburg journal of the early 1880s, one and the same?? One was a Governor, I believe the old paper said. My branch eventually left SC for Walker Co Georgia, then on to the Ozarks of Arkansas in 1856. My direct ancestors who left with some siblings, unk if parents of either also left SC, were David William Richardson and Catherine Satterfield (daug of Jesse Satterfield and Martha "Patsy" Harris who both were born in SC it's believed. Anyone out there have any knowledge of this? Thank you in advance. Judy Denver, NC
