Vivian: I have a few abstracted records from Dry Creek but the only item from the time period you mention is a list of the founding members and neither Cates nor Daniel is included. Dry Creek Church has good records on microfilm at Furman University. Perhaps they are available on interlibrary loan. John Cates migrated to Butler County, Alabama, Fort Deposit area after 1820 census and died there in 1826. About 1881 Martha Cates of near Fort Deposit, Butler County, Alabama, made a War of 1812 pension application on the record of her husband, John Cates, which was rejected because he was not found on the militia rolls. Also not found on militia rolls in modern day research in South Carolina although he was the right age and place. She stated that she was married to John Cates in Edgefield about 1815 by Rev. Hello, My g grandfather, Thomas WALLER, is listed on the 1870 Census as living in the "Saluda Division" of "Edgefield `County'." Can anyone give me an approximate description of what that division of old Edgefield District encompassed in 1870, and what county (Greenwood, Edgefield, Saluda) includes that division today? Also, does anyone know whether there was a place named "Pleasant Grove" in old Edgefield District ca. 1859 and its location? Thanks in advance for any clarification you may be kind enough to provide. I am looking for a Lott's Cemetery. I am assuming it is an old family cemetery. According to the GNIS map on SCIway.net it is located about 5 miles outside of Batesburg. I don't know much about that area, so I am not sure where to even look for the cemetery there. Anyone who can help with finding this cemetery, I would be eternally grateful. I have no success finding this cemetery thus far and could use all the help I can get. Thank you. Beth N. Augusta, SC

Most South Carolina Baptist Records are on microfilm at Furman University Library at Greenville. Don't have email address but you can do a search for it. Write them to see if they have records for that church for that period. And ask if film is available on interlibrary loan. If not you will have to go there. So be sure to check the hours as they used to be kept in a separate room within the library and it did not necessarily keep same hours as library. Also, slow tedious reading as film is of handwritten ledgers, formats differ from church to church, and ink is sometimes faded. No index.
