Posted on: Saluda Co. SC Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/SC/Saluda/20 Surname: Rinehart, LeGrone, Boddie ------------------------- CHAPTER I - PART II MATTHIAS RINEHART (1748-1808) I. John Rheynard, emigrant ancestor (1722-17 ) m. Agness his son II. Matthias Rinehart (1748-1808) m. Anna Margaret LaGrone MATTHIAS RINEHART (son of John Rheynard and Agnes ) was born about 1748 in Germany and died prior to October 12, 1808 intestate in Newberry County, South Carolina. In September, 1772 he obtained a memorial for 100 acres of land waters on Crim's Creek (present Newberry County, South Carolina) bounding on land of John Mills, Martin Cromers (?), Conrad Shirers and John Rinehart. Mathias Rinehart served in the Revolution in the South Carolina militia under Capt. Houseal and Col. Waters from May 13, 1780 to November 16, 1782. He appears on the 1790 South Carolina Census in the 96th District of Newberry County, (page 78) under the name of MATTHAIS RANEHEART with two males 16 an over; two males under 16 and five females. On the 1800 South Carolina Census he appears under the name of MATTHIAS RHINEHART in Newberry District with one male 10 and under, two males 10 -16, one male 45 and up. We find in the intestate record mentioned above and from a land sale dated 1889 that the wife of Matthis is named Anna Margaret LaGrone. She was the daughter of Tobias LaGrone and (?). The sale of Property in 1789 proves that she and Matthias were married by that date. The sale of Mathias Rhynhart property (personal) in 1808 does not shed much light on the names of his children. David and Mary Rhynhart shared in his estate and were probably children. All of the children listed below are mentioned in the settlement of the estate of Matthais Rinehart in 1808 as buyers of his personal property. Evidence points to the following as being children of Mathias Rinehart - (Not necessarily in order of birth) 1. Catherine Rinehart b. ca. 2. Mathais Rinehart born ca. 1773 died 1859 3. John Rinehart, Sr. born ca. 1775 died ca. July 12, 1829 4. Mary Rinehart born ca. died ca. Sept. 22, 1846 5. Barbara Rinehart born ca. died 1850 6. Adam Rinehart born ca 1783 died 7. David Rinehart born ca 1784 died 8. Elizabeth Rinehart born ca 1791 died 1871

I hope Saluda County is the right place to look. My great-great grandparents lived in Saluda Township in 1880. They were James Thornton (b. 1830) and Caroline Hayes Thornton (b. January 1838). Their children were Frank Columbus (1873) (my great grandfather), Samuel, Melvin, Ben, Pearson, Ellen, Julia, Green and Henry Thornton. In 1870 they were in Lexington County, Hollow Creek Township. Does anyone have any information on where James and Caroline were born or where they were in 1860 or what happened to Samuel, Melvin, Ben, Ellen, and Julia. A James Snelgrove lived with them in 1870. Obviously they were slaves at some point, then were farm hands. They must have been on someone's plantation. Columbus moved to Arkansas with his mother, Caroline. (Don't know what happened to James, her husband.) Green married Hattie Boozer and also moved to Arkansas. Don't know what happened to the others. There was a brother who may have been an Earhart or Arehart named Will or James. Any information about the ancestors appreciated. Maggie Ponds
