Hon. Frederick Chapman Stephenson, Ordinary of Hart County, died May 18, 1895, after a week's lingering sickness. Mr. Stephenson was born November 7, 1825 in Elbert County, now Hart, in the Cokesbury settlement. He was married to Miss Mary A. Pritchett, January 8, 1851. In 1854, when Hart County was organized, he was elected Clerk of the Inferior Court. After his election, in 1854, he moved to Hartwell, and in addition to his duties as Clerk, he taught school for some time, being the first school ever taught in the town. Mr. Stephenson held office of Clerk until 1868, when at the general election in that year he was elected Ordinary, which office he held continuously from that time until his death. When Judge Stephenson moved to Hartwell, Hon. John B. Benson was postmaster, and he at once turned the office over to the former, who held that office in connection with that of the others for nearly twenty-five years. When about ten years of age, Judge Stephenson united with the Methodist Church and remained a valued member until his death. In all walks of life--as citizen, as official, and as Christian gentleman--he measured fully up to the high standard of duty. Physically disabled by sickness when young, yet the amount of work accomplished by him during his life will rarely be excelled. From the time he was called to public station by the voice of his fellow citizens he literally dedicated his life to the interests and welfare of his country. As fair and impartial magistrate, s incorruptible citizen, as wise counselor, peacemaker and friend, he has left a record behind him that is a priceless legacy to his friends and fellow countrymen. His funeral was preached by Rev. Crawford Jackson , assisted by Rev. J. R. Earle, in the Hartwell Methodist Church. He was buried in the cemetery at Hartwell, where an appropriate monument marks his last resting place, with the following inscription: "To the Memory of Frederick C. Stephenson, Born Nov. 7, 1825. Gave himself to Christ and the M. E. Church in early life. Ws loved and honored by all who knew him. Passed the furnace of affliction he repressed Christ in his life. Was conqueror to the end. Died May 18, 1895." Mrs. Stephen, his wife, preceded her husband to the grave a little over a year, having died April 27, 1894. To Judge Stephenson and his wife were born two sons and two daughters: William R. Stephenson married Miss. S. A. Pressnell, February 24, 1872. F. L. Stephenson, the younger son, married Miss Matilda Ida M. Taylor. Miss E. C. Stephenson, the older daughter, married John Q. Snow, May 4, 1881. Miss Frances Alice Stephenson married John Q. Donald, January 12, 1881. Two children of Judge Stephenson and wife died in infancy. I noticed the name Stephenson being mentioned the other day. It is not my line but I knew there was an article in the copy of *History of Hart County* by John William Baker 1933. Hope whomever was researching this line can make use of this information.
