    3. Dear Yvonne, We generally use FTDNA 37 or Relative Genetics 43 markers. $221 and $199 respectively. The Genographic Project is a 12 marker test and is not the place to do Family DNA testing. What this is about is mapping people's general place of origin, for their information and to get your DNA. You're contributing more than you know to this project. If it is family genealogy you want find a family surname project that is yours and work within that group. These groups collect family lineages and gives you a place to compare yours with others of the same surname. You also get price break by joining the group. There are other advantages. We give away free CDs with Hendricks family record on it to DNA participants that are worth more than the cost of a 37 or 43 marker DNA test. 12 marker testing is not for family genealogy in my opinion. What lab does your group go through? I was wondering if you knew anything about the National Geographic Project that is inviting folks to buy a $99. DNA kit to map out people across the world. It seemed to me that it was more of a money-making venture in order to finance the real interest which appears to be in gathering DNA testing from isolated groups/tribes of people to determine migration patterns and roots of those tribes. I'm wondering how many markers that $99. test would provide. Your email was very interesting.
