    3. But are these census transcriptions going on the Ancestry subscription pages. If I spend my time transcribing, I want to be sure it is available free of charge to everyone, not just the Ancestry subscribers. 3. The transcriptions are posted to rootsweb. They will always be free. Ancestry has their own transcribers that they pay a wage to. We are doing a service to our fellow researchers and they are posted to Rootsweb and will remain free of charge. As the transcriber, you own the copyright to that transcription. You are giving Rootsweb the permission to forever post it for free access to all. I have a copy of my transcription posted to my web site. I wanted to annotate it with relatives and data to help other researchers to not only find their dead relatives, but to make contact with living ones as well. There is a link to it on the Wilkinson county, MS GenWeb pages (1850 records). If you had to pay for access to these records, my transcriptions would all be posted to my web site only. happy hunting, Tina Hall -----Original Message----- From: Lee and Billie Jones [mailto:tjones@camden.net] Sent: Sunday, February 25, 2001 7:23 PM To: SCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SC] CENSUS TRANSCRIBING, A BETTER WAY But are these census transcriptions going on the Ancestry subscription pages. 3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/census/inv/index.html This is the link I use to get to the census transcriptions. So far it's free. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/cen_img.htm This link takes you to the census images that have been donated. So far, also free Lee and Billie Jones wrote: > But are these census transcriptions going on the Ancestry subscription > pages. 3. Dear SC, Ancestry.com has what is called a Partnership program. Since they don't pay everyone to transcribe the documents online, you can transcribe and submit to this Partnership program. And they will post it and have it in free access in their databases. As I understand it, you get something out of the deal too. (I think the draw back to this though is that you need to have a full document rather than partial transcriptions of pages.) Often times there databases are sketchy at best. But this would be a good way to spread the knowledge far and wide. Particularly when Rootsweb needs maintenance, and the only thing available is Ancestry, or other websites... Why not submit to more than one spot?? I transcribe what I have, post to the list associated with the county and state, GenWeb, Also post to GenWeb and occasionally if the document is surname heavy (meaning that it has a great deal of one surname) I post to the surname lists. Also find the appropriate GenForum/FamilyHistory message boards. Wendy Lee and Billie Jones wrote: > But are these census transcriptions going on the Ancestry subscription > pages.
