The Toogoodoo is more a wide creek than a river. It is in southern Charleston County near Adams Run and Hollywood just west of the Dawho River which separates Edisto Island from the mainland. This is not far at all from Willtown on the Edisto River where the Spry family lived. All of this used to be in Colleton County. I am not too familiar with the cemeteries in this area but you're almost definitely looking in what is now Charleston County.

PLEASE POST AND INFORM LORD AND THURMOND FAMILY MEMBERS OF OUR UP COMING REUNIONS -- JIM LORD Dear All: I wanted to take a moment to invite all to attend the Lord reunion on Saturday, Sept 23 and the Thurmond reunion on Sunday, the 24th. I believe all are on the mailing list for the Lord newsletters but I wanted to add two important points. On I-85 out of Atlanta towards South Carolina at the Banks Crossing exit(#149), there is a huge outlet mall, several motels, and restaurants. This location is very convenient for the reunions--less than 10 miles away. The Comfort Inn at this location will give a discount for the reunion attendees. They are new, have no-smoking rooms, a continental breakfast, and honor all other discounts also. What I liked about the motel was that we could use those tables and chairs after the breakfast is served as a gathering and visiting area to look at pictures, genealogy notes, and scrapbooks at leisure. The phone number is 706-335-9001 and ask for Edna Kane. The second point is that after the Lord reunion (at 2:30 on Saturday afternoon), we will gather at the Chandler cemetery very near the meeting place of Blacks Creek Church for a rededication of this old family cemetery. We are making a scrapbook of the history of this cemetery with a list of all buried there, pictures, civil war information and any other data given by family members. This will be available for all to see. We will have a welcome, scripture, prayer, responsive litany, and then a speaker about the 16th GA INF. Soldiers in civil war costumes will place a battle flag over one of the Chandler graves, give a rifle salute and then fold the flag military fashion. Several wives of this re-inactment group will also be present in 1860 dresses and play musical instruments of that time as we gather. The company bugler will dismiss us with "Taps". This could be a great time to learn more about Thomas Lord descendants and civil war information also. Again, I invite you to make both reunions if at all possible. We have people working now to get notices about the Lord reunion and cemetery ceremony in the local newspapers. Why not call or e-mail other family members or any interested persons and invite them to attend??? People are hurt when they learn later or when they didn't bring a camera. Hoping to see you in Georgia! Glenda Thurmond
Cedar Shoals Plantation was on Fishing Creek in eastern Chester Co., SC. It was the home of the Gaston family, having been a land grant from the king before the Revolutionary War. John, a Justice of the Peace in Craven (later Chester) County, was the first one who settled there. Mary Buford Gaston (1841-1924), was his great grand-daughter. She was born at Cedar Shoals and lived there until moving to Chester. I think the W on the chair was the identification mark of the maker, and the Roman numeral indicated it was chair number 7 (VII) of the same kind made by the maker. Hope this info helps you. There are still Gastons in Chester. I am descended from Justice John's daughter Margaret. I would be interested to know where the trashpile was! Under four layers of old upholstery material, I discovered a small piece of paper. The paper is glued on the chair and says, "Purchased in Charleston by Mary B Gaston for Cedar Shoals Plantation." Also, if anyone can shed any light on the carving of the Roman numeral on the furniture, I would appreciate your comments. Thanks.
The below was posted on another list - and Urma who posted it, graciously permitted me to share with other lists. Kentuck Death Records: History of death records before 1911 The Government of the Commonwealth of Kentucky kept no deaths prior to 1852. The first vital statistics law passed by the Kentucky General Assembly in January 1852, required the Auditor's Office assessors of the tax to record deaths each year as they assessed property for the tax. The Auditor's Office never did the job well. This vital statistics law was repealed in 1862. The original lists and certificates of deaths which survive are in the State Archives. They are arranged by county and are for the years 1852-1862. Between 1862 and 1911, when the present Office of Vital Statistics was established, several attempts were made to again require the recording of deaths at the state government level. Some records for 1874-1879 survive as a result of a second vital statistics law. A few scattered records exist for the years 1891-1910. These records, arranged by county and date, are also in the State Archives. Four Kentucky cities (Covington, Lexington, Louisville, and Newport) maintained birth and death registers as well, from the late 1890s until 1911. For information on how to request these records, see the BIRTH AND DEATH RECORDS REQUEST FORM. <A HREF="http://www.kdla.state.ky.us/arch/vitastat.htm">Kentucky's Vital Statistics Information</A> (aol users - click underline) http://www.kdla.state.ky.us/arch/vitastat.htm (other - copy & paste) <A HREF="http://www.kdla.state.ky.us/arch/corpolic.htm">Genealogical Reference Correspondence Policy</A> http://www.kdla.state.ky.us/arch/corpolic.htm <A HREF="http://www.kdla.state.ky.us/">Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives</A> http://www.kdla.state.ky.us Ruth in NC

Beth, This probably won't help much, but in Martha Pool Nichols' Widow's appliction for pension there is an affidavit given by James Rembert, an ex-member of the South Carolina Legislature. Martha was the wife of William Nichols a Rev. War soldier who served from Anson County, NC. Wm. and family were in South Carolina by 1790 when the first census was taken. In 1790 William lived in Camden District, Claremont County. By 1800-10 the area where he lived had been changed to Salem County. By 1820 the area where William lived had again been changed to Sumter County and the area where he lived is now near Bishopville, Lee County. James Rembert said in his affidavit dated 28 Feb 1844 that he was personally acquainted with William Nichols for upwards of 15 years. That William Nichols departed this life on the 4th day of November 1823. This statement puts James Rembert's place of residence near William Nichols place of residence in about 1808. William Nichols is found on the 1800 and 1810 censuses of old Salem County which is no longer in existence. I hope this helps. I would seek out the Historical Society in Charleston, who would certainly have information on that plantation. How fascinating! For a FABULOUS read on the very early history of Charleston and the slave trade, read "Slaves in the Family" by Charles Ball. It traces the family history of the Ball family, who were very wealthy rice plantation owners around Charleston. It will fascinate you, break your heart and open your mind all at the same time. It's also an excellent example of writing an extremely interesting family history - not just names and dates. Audrey, Thanks for your note...Below is what I have on my THOMAS Line. Hello listers! I am putting my THOMAS lines up in the hopes that someone out there may have some additional information or may connect with this line. Anyone ? James Thomas b. ca. 1781,NC m. Mary(possibly West or Wess) b. ca. 1782, NC Known Children of James and Mary Thomas: 1. William Thomas b.ca. 1805, SC m. Sarah (HEARN) COPE b. ca 1806, married in Pike Co., AL on 22 Feb.1842 according to "Early Alabama Marriages" published by Family Adventure of San Antonio, Tx. Sarah is believed to be his second wife as their are two children born before this marriage occured. Known Children of William Thomas: i. Sarah b. 1836, AL ii. Amanda b. 1838,AL iii. George b. 1842,AL iv. Catherine b 1844, AL v. James b. 1846, AL vi. William b. 1848, AL 2. James D. Thomas b. ca. 1808, SC m. AL census, but not listed on 1860 census. 3. John F. Thomas b. ca.1820, SC m Martha Jane Gilmore b. ca. 1826, AL Children of John F. Thomas and Martha Jane Gilmore: i. Ira D. Thomas b. ca. 1843, AL ii. Matilda J. Thomas b. ca. 1845 m. Augustus R. Thomas (son of James D. and Catherine Thomas iii. William J. Thomas b. ca. 1846, AL iv. John Laurence Thomas b. ca. 1847, AL v. Andrew J. Thomas b. ca. 1849, AL (8 mos old on 1850 Census) 4. Wade Hampton Thomas b. ca. 1825, SC m. Mary F.Boswell b. ca.1817, SC (Mary is thought to be daughter of Thomas Boswell b. ca. 1785, SC, who is enumerated with this family on the 1860, Pike CO. AL census.) Known Children of Wade Hampton Thomas and Mary F. Boswell: i. Mary Matilda Judith Thomas b. ca. 1854 AL This couple lived in SC ca.1800-1835. From a study of census information, I believe I have narrowed their location to one of three counties: Edgefield, Newberry or Horry. The Horry County family looks the most promising at this point. I have found a Gedcom which lists an Elizabeth Jane Sellers in Horry County,SC, b. 1809 m. Calvin Sellers. Her parents are listed as James Thomas b. 1782, NC; d. 2 Nov 1864, Pike Co., AL and Mary ( West (Wess) ?) b. 1799 (does not coincide with my data), d. 27 Aug. 1859, Pike Co., Al. After studying the Horry Co., AL census for 1820 (p 142). The number of children and their sexes match up with what I have with the exception of one female child other than Elizabeth. The date of Elizabeth's birth also coincides with a large gap in the years of birth between two of my known Thomas children. If anyone is familiar with or can help with this Horry Co., SC Thomas line, I would love to hear from you and compare notes. I am looking for the parents of James and Mary, as well as other, as of yet, unknown children born to them. It is unknown at this time whether James and Mary Thomas m. in NC or SC. If anyone has any constuctive suggestions, I could sure use some about now...I seem to be have a really tough time finding much needed SC records. Thanks for taking the time to read!
