If anyone has the above book, would you check what it says about McCants and Winter and where they came from in Ireland.
Does anyone have information on a ship named HAPPY RETURN that came from Belfast to either NC or SC between 1720 and 1740 with a Carlile, McCants or Winter on it. Fred
If you have purchased a copy of Volume VIII of the Anderson County Cemetery Survey, please note the following information concerning a major error in this volume. That I thought I would send my answer to the list's The question was Are there any passenger lists for boats that ran from New Orleans to St.Louis, Mo.? I contacted the "Historic New Orleans Collection " in new Oleans , and they sent me this letter saying: ------------------ We have received your query concerning passenger lists for vessels working inland waterways. Unfortunately, I am not aware of any Archive possessing records of this nature. I strongly suspect that the records never had to be reported to any centralized authority.Records for small companies most likely remained the property of those companies and either remained in private hands or got thrown away after the company's demise. While your question is a good one, I do not know of any way for a researcher to track an ancestor in transit on inland waters. Whether it is records of the Kentucky and Ohio flatboatmen who headed to New Orleans in the 1820's - 30's or immigrants working their way from New Orleans to the nations heartland, the passenger manifests documenting these people's inland travels are not, to the best of my knowledge , housed in any local or regional archive. It is most likely that they no longer exist. Reference Assistant Williams Research Center The Historic New Orleans Collection So looks like there are no records of these people. I would like to invite you to visit my new website called The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com So far we have not been able to locate much information about poorhouses in South Carolina. Then a visitor to the site wrote us about an experience regarding poorhouse records in CHARLESTON County ... which we have now posted. Our response was...uhm...sort of...Yikes! DIRECTIONS: at the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then click on OTHER STATES, then click on SOUTH CAROLINA on the table of states. (If you have checked the page recently you will need to click REFRESH on your browser to see new material.) You may want to check to see what adjoining states have had posted about their poorhouse records. (There is a link to OTHER STATES at the bottom of the South Carolina page.) To see how important poorhouse records can be ... off the homepage go to HISTORY and LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS. We really hope to increase the amount of information we can make available about South Carolina. But the site only grows through tips and information submitted by folks like you. Your submissions will be greatly appreciated. Hope you enjoy the site! Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

I have this line from my grandmother's Colonial Dames papers and from additional research she did back in the 1970's. Unfortunately, she copied most of the interesting stuff in pencil and it is too faded to read well. Any additional information on these families (I have Reliques of the Ryves) would be greatly appreciated. Any suggestions on where to go and what to look for would also be helpful. Thanks! I am looking for information on my ancestor, Mary GILES, and her family. Mary GILES was born in 1710 at St. Michael's Parish, Bridgetown, Barbados and died 26 May 1757 at Charleston County, South Carolina. She married Thomas LEE 1 April 1733 at Bridgetown, St. Michael's Parish, Barbados. Thomas LEE was born 6 Feb 1710 in Bridgetown, St. Michael's Parish, Barbados and died 7 August 1769 at Charleston, Charleston Co., SC. His parents were Francis LEE and Mary BARNELL. This is per the book, "The Descendants of Thomas Lee of Charleston" by Thomas Carpenter Read. Thomas LEE and Mary GILES had at least one child, a son, named Stephen LEE (He is listed as Major Stephen LEE and his son is listed as Major Paul Smiser Hutson LEE and I'm not sure if "Major" is a family first name or if both of them attained the same rank in the military!?!) Paul's mother was a SMISER, but I don't know where the name HUTSON fits. Any information on these families would be helpful. Thanks! Fredreica speyer@bellsouth.net

I am planning a trip to SC later this month and would love to have a little more to go on in my search fro the GENDRON and BALL families. If anyone out there has additional infromation on these families or knows where I might obtain information, please let me know. Thanks! Fredreica speyer@bellsouth.net PS Does anyone have access to the book, "Recollections of the Ball Family of South Carolina and The Comingtee Plantation" by Anne Simons Deas? 1 - Joseph ADAIR, Sr. b. abt. 1711 Antrim Co, Ireland; d. 1801 Laurens CO., SC married (2nd) Sarah LAFERTY of Bath County VA (?). They were married in New Castle, DE in 1732. When Tax Free land became available in the Carolinas, Joseph and his brother James obtained Land Warrants in SC and moved there with their families from PA. Joseph and Sarah are supposedly buried at Duncan's Creek, Laurens Co., SC. 2 - Joseph ADAIR, Jr. b. 12 Mar 1733 probably in Lancaster Co., PA; d. 17 Oct 1812 married Sarah DILLARD b. 1736; d. 1758 (daughter of James Stephen DILLARD and Lucy WISE of VA). Joseph ADAIR, Jr. was a farmer and served in the Revolution. 3 - John ADAIR b. abt. 1753 at Laurens Co., SC; d. 28 Sep 1812 in Apalachee, Morgan County, GA married Jane JONES b. abt. 1766 in SC; d. abt. 1852 in Perry Co., AL John and Jane left Sc for GA with their 8 children and settled in the Morgan County area about 1800. John ADAIR served in the Revolutionary War, as did his father and grandfather. I am descended from John and Jane (JONES) ADAIR's daughter Mary ADAIR who was born about 1799 in Laurens Co., SC and died 12 June 1868 at Autauga County, Alabama. The above information comes from documents researched by my grandmother and internet postings from Lee Adair, Palmer Lee Pace and Lorna K. Lueck. I am planning a genealogy fact finding trip to SC later this month. If anyone has additional information on these families or suggestions on where to find additional information, please let me know. While reviewing one of the SC county grantee/grantor indices (late 1800's), I came across the terms "full warranty", "half warranty", "partition by commission" and "B/S" under the column heading "Character of Paper". I understand that "character of paper" refers to the type of document in question. What do the other terms mean? What do types of documented transactions do each of these terms describe? This one has been nagging at the back of my mind all day. I think my Alabama history teacher would be proud something stuck!! Place names in Alabama, Virginia O. Foscue, The University Press, 1989, Tuscaloosa, Ala. pg. 98 Mount Meigs -- Settlement with PO at 322145NO860607W in Montgomery Co. First known as Evansville for Jesse Evans, the tavern owner. When Evans moved away in 1818 or 1819, the town was given the subjectively descriptive name Mount Pleasant. The present desgination honors a local family who operated a store and a gin. Mount Meigs PO est. in 1827. Mount Meigs Station -- Settlement on the Western RR of Alabama at 322357NO860625W in Montgomery Co. Grew up around the RR station for the town of Mount Meigs, located about 3 miles to the southeast. Joyce McManus wrote: > Carol, > My 1985 Rand McNally College World Atlas doesn't show a Mt. Carol, My 1985 Rand McNally College World Atlas doesn't show a Mt. Meigs for SC, but does show a Meigs, GA with population 1,231 & zip code 31765. Also, Meigs, OH and Meigs,TN. Meigs, GA is somewhere around Waycross, Ga, but I can't locate the exact spot.
