    1. Vale/Vail family, York/Lancaster Counties
    2. Tom and Dee Scott
    3. In our family we have a story of a white child, William Vale, supposedly "taken" by the Catawba Indians in or around York or Lancaster County S.C. sometime in the late 1700s. He went on to marry a Catawba woman who bore him twin sons, Jeremiah and John Michael Vail about 1790 (we have no definite explanation for why the spelling of the last name was changed at this point). Shortly after this event William apparently left the Catawba village in somewhat of a hurry for reasons unknown, and was joined later by his wife and sons. There was also said to have been a third son, probably named Hiram, but records of his life have not been found. One or more daughters were said to have stayed with the Catawba. Jeremiah Vail (1790 -1870) eventually married a German girl, Mary Funderburk (1794- 1870), and they had a son, also named Jeremiah (1818 - 1882). Jeremiah's twin brother, John Michael, married Mary's sister Rachel. The second Jeremiah married Mary Bradley (June 10, 1824 - November 12, 1867), a half-breed woman whose mother Annie (died 1841) was said to be Creek. After a time in Pickens County, Alabama, the Vail brothers and their families eventually ended up in Bienville Parish, La. where the line thrives today. Source= Three Vail Brothers And Their Descendants, 1790-1900 by Lida E. Logan I would very much appreciate any information anyone has on any of these people. I am particularly seeking to get in touch with any relatives who may remain within the Catawba Nation. 3. Posted on: The SCRoots Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Sponsor/SCRoots/586 Surname: McDowell, McDill, McGriff ------------------------- I am trying to find info concerning Thomas McGriff prior to 1800. I would especially like to find any info concerning a possible link between McDowell family and McGriffs. The McDowells also may possibly have been known as McDill. Thomas McGriff came from Va. to S. Car., but around 1800 left for Nicholas Co., Ky., where he was until sometime before 1808, after which he removed to Ohio where he remained until his death in 1831. His daughter Susannah married my gggggrandfather James McDowell who had been ophaned at age 10 and left with an uncle for Nicholas Co., Ky. Am trying to establish possibility that Thomas McGriff was uncle to James McDowell or disprove, either way. Believe Thomas' wifeto have been (Susannah?) Adkins of Va. Any help would be most appreciated.

    3. does anyone have a copy of Alice Hawkins Quinn's genealogy of Robert GIBBES (1644-1715)? I must have been blind the last time I did an online SC Historical Society search! There are 10 - 14 references made to my SHOKES family in her research! Just hoping to get lucky. My car is dead and I'm waiting on a miracle. So I won't be doing much traveling in the near future. If none of you good people happen to have the research I will mail in my request. Odd how a few miles can seem like an eternity away now. Thank Goodness for the Internet!~ Janet Nielson Jilote

    1. RE: [SC] JONES; RICH/RITCH ... (GERALD)
    2. VPB
    3. Hi Janet, it seems your Rich family was the closest neighbor of the Gerald family that I'm sure I descended from but haven't proved a link or two. Have you seen the Mills Atlas on the Sumter Co webpage? Several of my ancestors are on this map, Thames, Conner, Benbow (paternal) and Gerald (maternal). http://www.rootsweb.com/~scsumter/maps/sumtermillsmap.jpg Rich and Gerald families are located on Summerville to Nelson Road. (It's toward the bottom of the map just right of center and just below the CLARENDON name to the left.) The map is dated 1825; this is the year my great-grandfather, John G. Gerald was born. Family members state my great-aunt said his father's name was Thomas Gerald. I have his obituary but it doesn't have his parents. "He was a gentleman of education and refinement and graduated from Columbia College in South Carolina". He was in Chambers Co. AL in 1850 and married Susan Coleman (Daughter of Richard Coleman and Lavina Hodge from Union Co. SC?). He died in Stewart Co. GA about 1893 and is buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery near Lumpkin, GA. Can you or anyone help me in determining who his parents may have been or just what or where "Columbia College in South Carolina" was? Any information at all would be very much appreciated. Vivian, South Bend, IN
