Posted on: The SCRoots Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/Sponsor/SCRoots/611 Surname: Dixon ------------------------- I'm looking for information on the relatives of William Dixon, (b. 6/22/1824) a native of South Carolina, who moved to Cleveland County, NC and married Elisabeth Earls (b. 3/9/1824) in 1845. He died on 8/22/1879. Elisabeth died on 10/6/1895. Thanks, Joby Dixon
Dear Temples Researchers: We tried to attached the photo of this house as a JPEG.file, but Rootsweb doesn't permit this. So would interested parties please contact me privately with their addresses so that copies could be sent you. We recently received a copy of a tin-style photograph from Gloria Kahrs that she said her mother thought it was of Seabron & Rebecca Temples that lived in Edgefield County, SC their whole lives. We have attached the photo as a JPEG.file. Rebecca died December 2, 1894. So, if this them, it would have been taken prior to this dated. They were married about 1843 and this may have been their 50th Wedding Anniversary picture. Gloria did say that her mother did think it was of a Temples family. If anyone can identify this picture, its time period, or the family, please contact me. Robert Temples Lynnwood, Washington
Dear Temple Researchers: We tried to attached the photo of this house as a JPEG.file, but Rootsweb doesn't permit this. So would interested parties please contact me privately with their addresses so that copies could be sent you. We recently received a photograph from Gloria Kahrs that she said her mother thought it was the "Temples House" that Seabron Temples lived at in Edgefield County, SC. After further research we suspect this maybe Seabron Temples with his daughter, Elender Caroline Temples (Ella), her husband, children, and an un-identified young lady (the lady with the darker plaid dress) around 1900. Based on the approx. time period, this maybe Seabron when he is living as a widower on his farm with his daughter and son-n-law, Wilson Johnston, around 1895-1905, (they were married in 1879). 1900 Census record, Edgefield Co., SC: "Wilson Johnston, head of household, white, male, born May 1850, age 50, married 21 years, born in South Carolina (SC), parents born in SC, farmer, looks like rented the farm, farm schedule 287; Ella, wife, white, female, born May 1862, age 38, married 21 years, 6 children born, 6 living, born in SC along with parents, can read and write; Octavia, daughter, white, female, born Dec 1880, age 19,single, born in SC, farm laborer, 3 months not employed, can read and write; Hattie, daughter, white, female, born Dec 1881, age 18, single, born in SC, farm laborer, 3 months not employed, can read and write; Donnie, daughter, white, female, born Sep. 1882, age 17, single, born in SC, farm laborer, 3 months not employed, can read and write; Eva, daughter, white, female, born Feb. 1889, age 11, single, born in SC, farm laborer, 6 months not employed, 3 months in school, can read and write; Barney, son, white, male, born Sep. 1891, age 8, single, born in SC; James, son, white, male, born Oct. 1896, age 3, single, born in SC; Stephens, father-in-law, white, male, born Apr. 1821, age 79, widower, born in SC, parents born in SC, can read and write." In the photo there are seven children shown. I am guessing on this one, that the second lady to the right of the older gentleman (Seabron we hope), she has a dress quite different from the rest, is a family friend or related family member. Under a magnifying glass she is one without an umbrella and or bible in hand. That would make this picture taken around 1900 with Seabron 79 years of age. He lived until 1906. We need to verify this, but it seems to fit the picture of this family around 1900 pretty closely. If anyone can identify this picture, its time period, or the family, we would be very grateful. Gloria did say that her mother did thought it was of a Temples's family. Please contact me if this looks familiar. Robert Temples

Has anyone on the list purchased the the following book: History of the Cherokee Indians - Old Families and Their Genealogy. Written in 1892, by Emmet Starr? I found it on the rearbook site. It has a list of surnames, many of which I'm interested in. Has some mention of SC people. Worth looking into if you think you're of Indian or Cherokee descent. http://hometown.aol.com/rarebk/booklists.html Janet Nielson Jilote
I am looking for the parents of Othaniel W. "Neill" Coker born in Clarendon Co., SC. in 1819. He had a daughter named Dorcas Whitly Coker so his initial might stand for Whitly. Neill married Elizabeth born in Clarendon Co. in 1821.They are in the Sumter Co., SC, 1850 census listed with Dorcas 1month, Mary A. 4, and Lydia A. 5. I would appreciate any info anyone would share with me concerning "Neill." Thanks in advance. Elsie Swilley
I recently posted an offer on several lists to send a copy of a U.S. Federal census spreadsheet I developed to anyone interested. The response was overwhelming! It quickly became obvious to me that there are many people as frustrated as me over not having a good method for organizing census extraction data. I created a website to handle the demand for my spreadsheet and quickly got busy developing more spreadsheets for my fellow census researchers. I am proud to announce that I am now making available a new spreadsheet I call CENSUS TRACKER, which I created to supplement and compliment my U.S. Federal 1790-1920 spreadsheet. It allows a researcher to document up to 130 years of the most genealogically significant census data for an individual on a single worksheet! At a glance and in a very professional appearing report, you can trace the important aspects of your ancestors' lives. Your pile of census data, difficult to analyze and evaluate when buried in drawers and paper files, comes alive when logically organized! I invite you to stop by my website at http://www.censustools.com and take a look. Census Tracker and my other spreadsheets are available for immediate download! If you previously visited my website at rootsweb, please change your bookmark. If you use the old address you will be redirected to my new website. The 1880 Kershaw Co. census, lists Mary Phillips Sutton, a widow, age48, with two children, George Franklin, age 16, and Sophronia Matilda, age 10. Sarah Frances later married George Washington Watts. Eliza later married James Hazelton Hopkins George Franklin later married (1) Anne Elizabeth Mathis, had children, George Edmund, Fannie Sutton Windham, Mamie Sutton Hopkins, Willie, Harrison Eugene, Anne Belle Sutton Windham, Lucille Sutton Windham, and Ansel. Zachariah served with the 1st S.C. Volunteer Regiment, Co. D, during the Civil War. Have found information on the 1850 Lancaster, S.C. census, listing a Mrs. N. Reynolds, age 70, M. Sutton age50 female, S. Sutton age21 female, and a J.Sutton, age 19 male, at listing number #513. At #514 lived, E. Sutton, age 22 male, C. Sutton, age 20 female, and E. Sutton, age 6/12 male. I believe the M. Sutton, age50 female, is my gggmother, Mary Sutton. There is also a listing in the local paper of the Lancaster area, dated Oct 9, 1859, where P.T. Hammond, local atty, published an executor's notice indicating Zachariah Sutton, had applied for letters of administration on the estate of Mary Sutton, deceased. Any additional regarding these folks would be appreciated.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION: Can I publicize or mention my book or service in the SCRoots Forum? ANSWER: Publications by organizations such as government archives, historical societies, non-profit genealogical societies, etc., may be described and announced in the email forum. Such organizations have a mission to help preserve and protect our historical records. Discussion or announcements about publications by such groups are usually not annoying. Blatant commercial advertisements are generally considered to be annoying "SPAM" and are not welcome in the SCRoots Forum. But, there are a few ways that subscribers can mention their business or publications in the Forum without being annoying. WAY #1. It is okay to include a SHORT text-only "signature" in your messages. In the signature you can mention your business, services, publications, contact information, etc. NO GRAPHICS or attachments are allowed. The basic message must be on-topic and appropriate for the Forum. And the signature lines must be brief or they will be annoying. WAY #2. The SCRoots web site (http://scroots.org) provides databases and other links where services and web sites can be listed. Commercial service announcements are allowed in the database, but not in the guest book or query boards. WAY #3. Authors and publishers of publications useful for Carolina genealogical or historical research may post a message in the forum announcing the publication PROVIDED that they comply with the following. A. Describe the publication and explain how it may be useful in the study of Carolina genealogy or history. Please make it more conversational and less commercial. B. In exchange for this special privilege, you must offer free lookups, or some other special benefit, for Forum members. This doesn't have to be an open-ended offer that lasts forever. Consider this the Email equivalent of a book signing where the author spends a day in a bookstore signing books. Digest subscribers get about one digest per day. To give Digest readers a chance, lookups offers should be announced at least 24-48 hours in advance of the event. C. You must give a direct email address where follow-up requests can be sent. It is okay to post lookup offers, requests, and responses in the forum. Public sharing of research is an appropriate use of the forum. But, we don't want "order-taking" messages in the forum. All order-taking should be by direct email or other means, not in the forum. Forum messages should not be annoying and should be on-topic. If you can't do it without being annoying, then don't do it here. Steve Coker, Manager The SC Genealogy Forum steve@scroots.org

Hi List, I'm sorry to have to take up the lists time but someone e-mailed me for a lookup for MILLIKEN (I think Moses) on FTM cd # 517 - I accidentally deleted it and can't retrieve it - would the person please e-mail again? Jennifer, Joshua L. and Isaac Nichols migrated from Sumter County, SC, after the 1820 census was taken, to Bedford County, TN. Some time between 1840 and 1850 they moved to Marion County, AL. Both were War of 1812 soldiers and bounty land applications filed in Marion County state that they served in McWillie's Regiment of SC Militia. Joshua's military papers state that his place of rendezvous after discharge in Charleston was Salem County. I believe they lived in the area of Salem which later became Sumter County. William and Jacob Nichols were living in Salem County in 1810--one of them was possibly Joshua's and Isaac's father. William Nichols was a Rev. War soldier who served from Anson County, NC. He was living in that area of SC by 1790 and continued living there until his death in 1823. Jacob Nichols only appeared on the 1810 census. His widow may have been Cath Nichols who is listed on the 1820 Sumter census. Census records show that both these men had several sons. Would love to hear from you, if any of these names ring a bell.
