Janet, Ancestry has the 1790 census images online. I have viewed them many times, and saved the pages that pertain to my lines. SC is there. They come up in your search as "1790 United States Federal Census" under the census records. Click on that, then once you are on the next page that lists each hit, you click on the link "View Image Online". There they are! They are mixed in with the other states. Many months ago I joined Ancestry.com. I had written and even spoken with them by phone, asking when they would have the SC Census Images online.... Ancestry said around Dec. and poss. into Jan. Well, that's come and gone. And I'm disappointed to say the least. I paid for a 3 mo. subscription (x2) waiting for this time saving info to be made available. The best I've come up with was a 1790 Census... on a County Website, but I'm looking for the ones with "guts"... the info I can really use. I am one of those people who wants proof... copies of the actual census info. Transcribed info is useful, and thank God for those who do the work. I would want both sources of info online. Though, I have found that many people have a difficult time reading the old script and transcribing can be even worse if one is not knowledgable and familar with it. A difficult task made worse by a census taker with poor handwriting. So... were's the darn online SC CENSUS Images! <<<breathe, Janet! breathe!>>> I'm fine. Just self absorbed. Want MY info online before those "other" (less important) states. Janet Nielson Jilote If you can't take a joke... don't visit me~

Betty...go to any GENWEB page either county or state of your choice, on there contact the coordinator..they are begging for help. They will tell you what they need and give you options. One page, 2 pages and so forth, plus they always need proof readers to check what we type. I've been known to make mistakes..but of course only once or twice...LOL The great enjoyment I get from it is worth every hour I spend typing. Plus it helps me find my ancestors. I help the Pickens Co GENWEB site. But take your choice. There is usually no time limit. Your have helped make my day...gosh wish we had more like you! O.K. I do not work, and I'm at home most of the time. I would be glad to transcribe some pages but I need some information. Is there a list somewhere that tells which ones have been transcribed, and which ones need to be transcribed and where are they? How do I get the census to be transcribed? I have only been on the computer for about two years, so I do not know a lot about converting things to different forms, etc. I would be glad to help if it is something I can handle. Just show me the way!!! I'm working in Marlboro , Chesterfield,Barnwell and surrounding counties primarily, but will be glad to do anything that will help. Penni, I believe most of the family were located in Beaufort, and Colleton Districts. Thomas Hayward, signer of the Declaration of Independence is buried on his plantation near Ridgeland. If you can get access to a 1825 Mills Atlas of South Carolina you will see where many of the plantations were. The good news is plantations usually kept very good records of their slaves. It was good business. The bad news is they were located where they were. That was the first part of the state which welcomed Sherman. I know of only one building in now Jasper County that is still standing, the church, which was used as a stable. Every house, every outhouse and every corncrib was usually burned. Owners rarely considered their books one of their possessions that had to be removed. You might contact The SC Historical Society in Charleston for any plantation papers that may have survived. Next place is of course the SC Archives. More good news, Nancy Peeples has just transcribed the "Losses by the Enemy" on the Low Country List. During the war when plantation owners had slaves run away or building burned they would petition the State for reimbursement. It would list the slaves and sometimes by slave family. I will forward to you one of her posts. I believe she also cross-posted the "Losses" to the African-American genealogy lists and several people reported slave matches. Lots of Luck! Julius Huguenin

The transcriptions are posted to rootsweb. They will always be free. Ancestry has their own transcribers that they pay a wage to. We are doing a service to our fellow researchers and they are posted to Rootsweb and will remain free of charge. As the transcriber, you own the copyright to that transcription. You are giving Rootsweb the permission to forever post it for free access to all. I have a copy of my transcription posted to my web site. I wanted to annotate it with relatives and data to help other researchers to not only find their dead relatives, but to make contact with living ones as well. There is a link to it on the Wilkinson county, MS GenWeb pages (1850 records). If you had to pay for access to these records, my transcriptions would all be posted to my web site only. happy hunting, Tina Hall -----Original Message----- From: Lee and Billie Jones [mailto:tjones@camden.net] Sent: Sunday, February 25, 2001 7:23 PM To: SCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SC] CENSUS TRANSCRIBING, A BETTER WAY But are these census transcriptions going on the Ancestry subscription pages. Yes, it is. My relative is John W. Walling who died in 1874. He was my great grandmother's 2nd husband. In the probate records in Charleston, SC, it is stated that he was buried at St. Johns Chapel. I do not know if there is a stone there or not. If you go to: http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html and put in Pinopolis under Feature name, then South Carolina under State, then Berkeley under County, you will see the various names using Pinopolis. It is on a peninsula near Moncks Corner. Bob, I processed the 1820 Amite county, MS census from photocopies within three days, and I was being lazy! I did this one on my own because I was looking for my own folks, and stumbled upon some I didn't realize were there! I donated it to the project because it was not posted yet. My cousin was my proofreader. I think that if we were all to pitch in, the records will all be online in no time flat. FTM has the 1850 images online, and Ancestry has quite a few 1790, 1900, and some 1920 images online. Anyone with access to the images could proofread from those! That puts quite a few folks in a position to help without having to leave their homes at all. It would take nothing away from either site because those of us who still "have to see it for themselves" would still find a way to view the images, either through our libraries, our own subscriptions to those sites, or through any other source such as NARA. I have found that "many" of the URLs given on the RootsWeb lists will not work. I am told that the question mark (?) and everything thereafter must be deleted If that does't work, shorten so that only ".com" remains on the right hand end of the URL, and go from there. I do not know why, so don't Email me. Bob

Emma, I am also looking for a John Clark. Not sure if we have communicated before but let me share a little to see if you, or anyone else, has a match. Our CLARK line was supposed to have been in VA and then moved into the "Carolinas" before settling in GA. Family tradition says they were herding cattle along the NC/SC line. The first thing we know for sure is that they were in Burke Co. GA in abt. 1802. John was born in 1768 and had probably been married before he married Emilia SIKES we think in Burke Co. Their first child was a girl named Nancy born in 1803. John had the following siblings -- Eli, Henry, Hester, and Mary. We have heard there were more and the names James and Samuel have been mentioned. One of the boys was supposed to have moved on into Mississippi. One book says their parents were F. M. Clark and Elizabeth Monroe. This has never been proved and I have not found a couple by these names that match. The F.M. may stand fro Francis Marion or the F. may be for Flournoy. Both of these names were used for children in the families. John named his first son, by his marriage to Emelia, Calphrey. John ended up in LAurens Co., GA and raised his children there. We have the families of the siblings (except Mary) pretty well documented. They all lived in South GA. Let me know if I should send more details. Sandy slsamz@aol.com
