    1. RE: [SC] more thoughts about transcribing census
    2. Tina Hall
    3. The government does not and cannot copyright the censuses or any other data that they publish because it belongs to the public in general. Their printed materials are uncopyrightable, except in format. Companies that make available the census on CD's, in books, etc. can only copyright the format, but never the actual material. You can copy the census and publish it in any manner you wish. You will never own the copyright to that census, only the format in which you presented it. 3. Shirley; I'm in no position to do any of this, as much as I would like to but may I ask: if a person looks up census on microfilm and makes copies in the library of it can that person simply email(if they had a scanner that wasn't broken-ahem) the copies of the pages to a site at Rootsweb? Let each person decide for themselves or ask over the Internet what some name looks like that they can't decipher? frances ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shirley" <swarren2@prodigy.net> To: <SCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 26, 2001 10:31 AM Subject: [SC] more thoughts about transcribing census > This is from one of the leaders at the USGenWeb Census Project at > http://www.us-census.org/info/ > > "working with a "team of volunteers" is a great way of > > getting a particular census transcribed. 3. To: Susan Johanson <djohanson@mindspring.com> I have an EXCEL file compiled by Mr. H. C. Ouzts on the Clark familes with connections to Old Edgefield Dist/Co., SC. I checked his file, and this is what I find that seems to be your family. 1- John Baylis Clarke [1780] 2- John Baylis Clarke, Jr. [1800](m. Martha Nevit)[1850] 3- Elias Lake Clarke 4- Robert Lake Clarke 5- Sarah Lake Clarke 5-Susan Clarke (m. Johanson) Springfield VA johanson@digizen.net The email address seems to be the source of the data to Mr. Ouzts. Nothing else in the file seems to match, but I do not know much about the Clark family. i got the file for someone else. Mr. Ouzts willingly shares, and if you can open EXCEL, I can send for you to have in case you find some recognizable names that he had not connected yet. He also has a Lake file. 3. Louis did your McLure's keep the spelling McLure or did they turn it to McClure? I am very interested in this because the gggggrfa from Ms. I'm am almost positive has a fa from SC; they say there's a book in Ms. that states his fa b. Pa.? and that's where the info stops, no name for the man place date etc. and I believe he like the rest of the bunch were from SC; found James and Wm. McClure's in SC in earlier census if I remember correctly(found my gggggrfa 10 yrs. ago) and his name was Wm. McClure and his bro was James. I believe the name John is in that same family, not used in our later descendents but I believe they tie in at an earlier date. frances fmcw@ktc.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kifle Tesfamariam Tewelde" <ktewelde@interbaun.com> To: <SCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 26, 2001 7:27 AM Subject: [SC] Need to find Stewart and McLure Cemetaries > Som of my Stewart ancestors came from South Carolina, and am asking subscribers if they know of any private Stewart and McLure cemetaries in the State. " US GenWeb has a program called CART which you can download or you can use Excel to enter the information. I don't know if this is still in effect, but S-K Publications, Wichita, KS (http://www.skpub.com/genie/census2.html was providing a free copy to US GenWeb census transcriber volunteers. As with most volunteer work you get more than you give. No one can appreciate the work that goes into transcribing until one has done so. It will help one learn to decipher old handwriting. It will help one understand why there are so many mistakes on people's names. It will give a whole new perspective on how much work has been done and how much needs to be done to make census information readily available on the internet. Also, another way to get more census info online is at Kindred Konnections. Volunteer to do a census page and you will received a one hour free search at K-K. If you are a subscriber to Family Tree Maker's Books online there are many census images there. I have no connection to US GenWeb Census Project, S-K Publications or Kindred Konnections.

    1. Re: [SC] CENSUS Why not place in more than one spot
    2. Karl T. and Wendy Mayfield
    3. Dear SC, Ancestry.com has what is called a Partnership program. Since they don't pay everyone to transcribe the documents online, you can transcribe and submit to this Partnership program. And they will post it and have it in free access in their databases. As I understand it, you get something out of the deal too. (I think the draw back to this though is that you need to have a full document rather than partial transcriptions of pages.) Often times there databases are sketchy at best. But this would be a good way to spread the knowledge far and wide. Particularly when Rootsweb needs maintenance, and the only thing available is Ancestry, or other websites... Why not submit to more than one spot?? I transcribe what I have, post to the list associated with the county and state, GenWeb, Also post to GenWeb and occasionally if the document is surname heavy (meaning that it has a great deal of one surname) I post to the surname lists. Also find the appropriate GenForum/FamilyHistory message boards. Wendy Lee and Billie Jones wrote: > But are these census transcriptions going on the Ancestry subscription > pages. 3. Many months ago I joined Ancestry.com. I had written and even spoken with them by phone, asking when they would have the SC Census Images online.... Ancestry said around Dec. and poss. into Jan. Well, that's come and gone. And I'm disappointed to say the least. I paid for a 3 mo. subscription (x2) waiting for this time saving info to be made available. The best I've come up with was a 1790 Census... on a County Website, but I'm looking for the ones with "guts"... the info I can really use. I am one of those people who wants proof... copies of the actual census info. Transcribed info is useful, and thank God for those who do the work. I would want both sources of info online. Though, I have found that many people have a difficult time reading the old script and transcribing can be even worse if one is not knowledgable and familar with it. A difficult task made worse by a census taker with poor handwriting. So... were's the darn online SC CENSUS Images! <<<breathe, Janet! breathe!>>> I'm fine. Just self absorbed. Want MY info online before those "other" (less important) states. Janet Nielson Jilote If you can't take a joke... don't visit me~

    3. There is a St John's Episcopal Chapel in Charleston, SC. I have many family members buried there and some were moved to other cemeteries when the church was no longer in use. Behind the church and along the back wall/fence of the churchyard there are several stones proped against the wall that were removed when a basketball court was put in, or knocked over from storms or vandals. Two of my SHOKES line are still buried with their stones. There are few stones left in their original places. The last time I was there the bldg. was being used for unwed mothers and youth programs. It is located on Hanover St. Most of the church records were lost in a fire and are not kept at St John's Church, (West Ashley), Chas., SC. I found a couple of relatives in Sunday School Records. I think half the congregration was related to me! So many of the marriage/death records list St John's. And many of my relatives lived on Hanover St and surrounding streets for many years. The area was known as Hampstead Mall. If I can be of any help... let me know.
