Do you have any information indicating that Stewarts moved from South Carolina to Texas in the 1750s-1870s maybe changing their name along the trail. Thank you. Louis S.

Do you mean the Stewart family or the Stuart family?
I know something of the Stewarts in TX. If you have questions, do not hesitate to contact me. Mike
p.s. my half bro's maternal grfa was a Perry and also from Central Texas. Perry is also supposed to be Indian; there was a Cherokee? Chief by the name of Perry-I may have the tribe wrong and can't remember the State. frances ----- Original Message ----- From: <MartinJac@aol.com> To: <SCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 26, 2001 22:27 PM Subject: Re: [SC] Need to find Stewart and McLure Cemetaries > Louis - in any of your searches into Stewarts - have you come across a Martha > Stewart who married an Isaac Perry? Jacqui, Fairfield is one of the towns the family came to when they came to Texas. It can give a clue as to the migration since the towns were given the same names often that were from other States. frances ----- Original Message ----- From: <MartinJac@aol.com> To: <SCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 26, 2001 22:27 PM Subject: Re: [SC] Need to find Stewart and McLure Cemetaries > Louis - in any of your searches into Stewarts - have you come across a Martha > Stewart who married an Isaac Perry? Have the cemetery record book for Berkeley County and will do a lookup for you.St. John's Baptist Church(Chapel) was established in 1851 in Pinopolis and is 3-4 miles from Moncks Corner. It is a very simple white wooden church and the cemetery is attached to the church. My parents(newcomers-1946 to Berkeley) are buried there. Anne
We don't have any Marthas or Issacs in our family history line that goes back to 1750 in South Carolina. Sorry. Louis S.
As far as we can tell our Stewarts seem to have been the "Northern" Stewarts. They seem to have immigrated to SC, but we don't know from where they may have come from either Scotland/Ireland to there. These Stewarts have been found in the SC area since 1770 with the oldest person about 1750 who may have been the immigrant. For what it is worth, when I started on the Web, a lady in Florida told me that there were three distinct lines of Stewarts who came to the United States, and the more I do research, I can see what she means. One can start to pick them out, even though some could of easily moved in with the "other Stewarts". Anyway, to continue the story, our Stewarts and McClure's went to Kansas, and Ohio, Nebraska hence the name the Northern Stewarts. I believe she said there were Our Stewarts, the TennesseeFlordia (and areas) and the ones that went to Texas areas. I have discoverd another one and that is the ones who started out in the New York area. If you want to discuss further, I can be reached at ktewelde@compusmart.ab.ca. Have you tried the lady from Greece, who has the Stewart Clan Magazines, and is very up on the Stewarts from all over. If you don't have her name I will find it for you. She does have a large web site to look at. Her knowledge and research is wonderful. Since Stewart is such a common name things can get confusing. Louis S.
Louis S. Did any of your Stewarts migrate to Tennessee? Demps(e)y Stewart(my gggrandfather) is listed in the 1820 and 1840 census for Chester County. He is also listed in the 1830 census for Fairfield County. He is in the 1850 census for White County, Tennessee. I have not found any other references to him in South Carolina. Do you recall finding any references to him during your searches? Tina thank you. I wish I had access to it all; I would love to scan the whole ordeal to Rootsweb so people could at least find where their ancestors died, maybe. I can't get to the main library now and have had an injury but they do have the Federal census for 1900 and 1910 and a lady said that they are now coming out with the 1920 one. frances ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tina Hall" <res00waz@gte.net> To: <SCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 26, 2001 16:43 PM Subject: RE: [SC] more thoughts about transcribing census > The government does not and cannot copyright the censuses or any other data > that they publish because it belongs to the public in general. Yes. The Census is taken by the Federal Government. You are allowed to make as many copies as you are willing to feed the copy machine at the National Archives where the microfilm copies of the Census are open to all to look at and copy. You do not have to be concerned with copyright. The copies at the libraries are copies of the the original Censuses. There is also a microfilm copy of the original Census in the State Archives. When the Census were first microfilmed, a copy was kept in Washington, DC at the National Archives and a copy was sent to the State. There are copies at most libraries of local Censuses. Sometimes, the local copies are better than those in Washington--they haven't been looked at by so many people, so many times.
