I am looking for information on John Cooper Sr., of Rutherford County NC. I don't know who his parents were. I suspect he (John Cooper Sr.), was born in Rutherford Co NC about 1810, (give or take ten years) based upon the known age of his son Newton C. Cooper. John Cooper Sr. married Cecelia (Sisaly) Butler, also of the Rutherford Co NC area. One son of John Cooper Sr and Cecelia Butler Cooper was Newton C. Cooper. b. 1835 in Rutherford County NC. Newton C. Cooper served in the 16th NC Infantry, Company D from March 1862 and survived the war. Newton married Lucinda Boheler, daughter of Jacob Boheler and Polly Downey. Looking for information on a Dr. Charles HETTLEY/HEATLEY b. ? d. ? m. abt 1785/86 to Margaret HALL b. 1764 d. 1822. Family tradition states that this Dr. HETTLEY was quite a few years older than Margaret and from the southern portion of South Carolina and was involved in a court case in 1789 York Dist,, SC basically fathering a child of Margaret HALL's out of wedlock and Margaret was fined 3.11.6. They eventually married and had several more children. This is the only information I have on Charles HETTLEY. When a landowner died intestate, how was his property (land holdings) distributed to his heirs? More specifically, how was this information passed to the county courthouse, since presumably if one of the heirs wished to sell his/her share of the land, a deed to that portion would have to have been created. Hello list. I am so frustrated with SC searching and not finding a decent lead. So I am asking the list readers for help. The surname I am researching is FORD of Ridgeland SC. My aunt is my primary source of information. From her, I understand Joe (Joseph?) Ford, and african american was to been a well known man and whom owned an enormous amount of land in Mitchville SC. I am going to assume my aunt means Mitchell SC as I cannot find a reference to Mitchville. My aunt indicates that Joe Ford sold land to neighboring relatives. These would include SCHULER, CLARK, RILEY, and DRAYTON. My aunt cannot recall absolute names or dates. I have searched death index, USGenWeb, and other websites without any luck. Can anyone help? Are there any searchable websites that may provide some clues? I have tried census records and cannot locate Joe or his family. As an aside, did you know there is a very small town named Gourdin (Guh-dine) just in Williamsburg Co. or possibly even just inside Georgetown Co.? It's pretty deserted now, but was named for the Gourdin family. If you can find Kingstree on a map, look south for Lane, and then about five miles south is Gourdin. Thought you might be interested in this; to my knowledge there are no GOURDINS around, but you may want to check. Godspeed...
