So far everyone else showed he just had daughters. I'm trying to find out if both Benjamin & Paul had sons. Was there a will for Paul who married Mary Gantlett? 3. Elizabeth, You said "Please advise this descendant of Charlotte Manby Villepontoux who married William Miles Heyward". From SCMAR. Volume VII, 1979 Marriage and Death Notices from the South Carolina Weekly Museum Heyward, William, Esq., of Prince William's Parish, to Miss Charlotte Manby Villeponteux, of this city, Thursday, 1 June. Dee For details on the reference sources used for lookups, refer to this link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbladen/lookups.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Bitzoemler To: Dee Thompson Sent: Saturday, April 24, 2004 12:04 PM Subject: Villepontoux genealogy Dear Dee, I wrote you through SCRoots-L requesting info on Pierre Villepontoux, Jr.'s will. I think I need to also request, if possible, the 4 wills of: 1-Pierre Villepontoux, Sr., died 1711, St. James Parish, Goose Creek, Santée, Province of Carolina. His wife's name was Jane Rivasson (death date unavailable). 2-(Pierre) Peter Villepontoux, Jr., died 25 Apr 1748, Christ Church Parish, Charleston, Berkeley, South Carolina. His wife's name was Frances L'Escot, died 26 Sep 1753. 3-Paul Villepontoux, son of Peter Villepontoux, Jr., died abt 1774? His wife's name was Mary Gantlett (death date unavailable). 4-Benjamin Villepontoux, b: Abt 1693 or 1748, probable son of emigrant Pierre Villepontoux, Sr., or Peter Villepontoux, Jr. or Paul Villepontoux. He died 27 Oct 1792, Jacksonborough, St. Paul's Parish, South Carolina. His wife's name was Jane DuPont, died 10 May 1813, Savannah, Chatham, Georgia (I don't have her will). I'm trying to place everyone in their proper places in the male lines of the descendants of the elder emigrant, Pierre Villepontoux, b: Abt 1643, Bergerac, Dordogne, France. I have been trying to make sure of all my gathered information, & have arranged it chronologically. 1) I think that perhaps, the elder emigrant also had a son named Benjamin, who must have been born in New York. From the following item dated 1705, I found mention of a Benjamin Villepontoux, & I question if it is correct in date: Sources: "Colonial Families of South Carolina / Motte Alston Read. Microfilmed manuscripts from South Carolina Historical Society, Charleston, South Carolina." "Deas MS., p73", "M. C. O. - V7. - 60" "Master in Chancery", "To: Daniel Legare, Jr." "Whereas, Elias Ball U Isaac Harleston, Exors. of Lance Smith x x bill of complaint agst. Mary Smith & Catherine Smith infant chiln. of Sd. Lance Smith .. to sell plantn. of 500 acres on Wassaimsaw, in St. James Goose Creek -" "Granted to James Moore, 21 Aug. 1705; bounds: at grant on all sides by vacant lands; - but afterwards: E. by Benjm. Villepontoux, S. by John Wright, W. by George Bower, N. & N.E. by Wm Parker" 2) From what I have gathered in my reading of the extract of the will of Peter Villepontoux's wife, Frances L'Escot, it does not say that she actually had a son named Benjamin. It reads that she had a grandson named Benjamin. "Source: SO. CA. HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL MAGAZINE v. 6 1905 SOUTH CAROLINA GLEANINGS IN ENGLAND. page 123 Frances L'Escott of Charles Town, South Carolina, widow. Will 24 August 1752; proved 26 September 1753. To Mrs. Mary Mazyck wife of Isaac Mazyck of Charles Town, Merchant #100 current money. To Ann the wife of Mr. Henry Gray, #200 Current money and my silver coffee pot. To Grandson Francis Villepontoux my negro boy named Antony. To my grandson Benjamin Villepontoux $100. To my granddaughter Frances Villepontoux my Negro woman named Molly with all her children. - To Susannah Fountaine #5. To my grandson Paul Villepontoux one shilling sterling if demanded in full of all Right, Interest, and claim he may have or ought to have to any part of my estate. The rest to my grandchildren Frauncis Villepontoux, Benjamin Villepontoux and Frances Villepontoux. Executors: Mr. Isaac Mazyck and Mr. Zachariah Villepontoux, jointly or severally. Witnesses: Thomas Corker, John Lewis, John Remington. Letters of administration granted to George Chardin Esq, lawful attorney of Zachariah Villepontoux for the benefit of both executors now residing respectively in South Carolina. Searle, 265." Source: "S.C. Historical & Genealogical Magazine. South Carolina Historical Society. July 1920 Volume XXI , No. 3." "Died. On Saturday the 27th instant Benjamin Villepontoux, Esq. an old and respectable inhabitant of this city. Tuesday October 30, 1792." Dee, please, if you are able to find the above wills mentioned for those men, I would sincerely appreciate it. That way I will know for a fact just who were their children. What a mix up things can get when others copy another's postings. Trying to tract down all the loose ends can drive one up the creek. <grin> Even if you just send them to me by my email, I would appreciate it, since I had prior on the SCRoots list requested I think one will. I have names of children that might be right for Paul, & perhaps one of his sons. He is said to have had sons: Benjamin, Paul, & John. I don't know who they married & haven't yet been successful in finding that out. I do know that a Charlotte W. Villepontoux was born about 1771, & she had 3 husbands: John Boyd Harvey, James Lesesne (1 issue w/descendants), & Gen. William J. Cowan (not sure if any issue). I also know that a Rebecca Villepontoux was born about 1780 & she married Thomas Downey or (Dowdey?) & had 2 children with one having descendants. My research on the Villepontoux family has also taken me into the French church records, which I have been slowly going over. It also has brought me into contact with a descendant of the De Rivasson family, whose daughter Jane Rivasson married the elder emigrant and French Huguenot, Pierre Villepontoux, the lawyer. Thank you in advance for your kind help. You did so once before when you answered a question I posted on the Quaker-L list, & I finally found the answers through very hard research about Daniel Latham & the whole thing on that family has slowly fallen into place. Please advise this descendant of Charlotte Manby Villepontoux who married William Miles Heyward at my email, [email protected] Cordially, Elizabeth Thomas

Mentions: executors to sell House fronting on King Street; executors to "let" lot north of Charles Town on Trott's Point and plantation in Christ Church Parish for benefit of my dau. and 2 sons until they are of age; residue of estate divided between said dau. and 2 youngest sons. Exors: brother Zachariah Villepontoux; nephew John Moore; Mr. Jonathan Drake. Wit: James Grindlay, James Poyas, Susanna Trezevant. D: 24 Mar. 1747/8. P: 29 Apr. 1748. R: ____. p. 39. In this same book I have the Wills of SUSANNAH VILLEPONDOUX, 1748/9, sister of the above Peter, and FRANCIS LESCOTT, 1752, mother-in-law of the above Peter. In # 121 I have the Will of ZACHARIAH VILLEPONDOUX, 1779/81, brother of the above Peter. In # 181 I have the Will of FRANCIS VILLEPONDOUX, 1792, son of the above Peter; and JUDITH VILLEPONDOUX, 1796/8, wife of Francis, daughter-in-law of the above Peter; also ZACHARIAH VILLEPONTOUX, 1779/83 and ZACHARIAH VILLEPONTOUX, 1787/88. C., 1964, purchased from Appleton's Books & Genealogy, $40.00 Do you see an abstract of a will for Peter (Pierre) Villepontoux, Jr., wh had married Frances L'Escot ?? He was born in 1684 in Bergerac, Dordogne, France & died on 25 Apr 1748 in South Carolina. I have seen an abstract of France L'Escot's will, but not of his. I'm curious about his given name, since what I have seen shows him as Peter, Jr. & not as Paul. There are some posted pedigrees showing his name as Paul. His father was the emigrant, Pierre Villepontoux, b: Abt 1643, Bergerac, Dordogne, France and died 1711, St. James Parish, Goose Creek, Santée, Province of Carolina. From the following source: "The Huguenots of Colonial South Carolina," p. 20-21, "Goose Creek" According to an incomplete enumeration preserved in Mrs. E. A. Poyas' Peep into the Past, the following were tax payers at Goose Creek in 1694. She says: "I have seen assessment of the inhabitants of Goose Creek, for January 1694, which gives property as follows: Peter Villepontoux, Madam Elizabeth Gaillard, o2,234; Peter St. Julien, for Louis Pasquerau o350; Francis Guerin, Peter Guerin, Abraham LePlain, Gideon Fisherau (Foucherau), Benjamin Marion, Mr. Mazck, Moses Moreau, Benjamin Godin." If Peter was born in 1684 in Bergerac, I'm sure from the above item written about taxes assessment, that Peter Jr. was not the individual she was writing about, but his father. Therefore, I definitely want to see an abstract about Peter Villepontoux, Jr.'s will. His wife died 26 Sep 1753 in Charleston. I would also like to see an abstract of the will of the son of Peter Villepontoux, whose name was Paul Villepontoux. He was married to Mary Gantlett. I think that they may have had about 5 children? I would like to knoww all of their names, since I've read that there was a Charlotte W. Villepontoux, & a Rebecca Villepontoux, who must have been the children of his son, Paul, Jr. Elizabeth

    3. Eve, Thank you so much for responding. I bought all the Indexes at a rare book store today and then realized that I have precious few of the volumes. I did a search on Abebooks and found 125 of the volumes but the idea of spending my life searching for the missing ones is not very appealing. Thanks again for your help and if I can ever do any lookups for you just yell. 3. Dee, I noticed Your list, #141. ABSTRACTS OF THE WILLS OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA 1740-1760. Compiled and Edited by Caroline T. Moore, The R. L. Bryan Company, Columbia, S. Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dee Thompson" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]b.com> Sent: Thursday, April 22, 2004 7:37 PM Subject: Re: [SC] South Carolina Historical Magazine > Eve, > Thank you so much for responding. > I bought all the Indexes at a rare book store today and then realized > that I have precious few of the volumes. 3. Wain: It sounds as if your Reily may have been an immigrant from Ireland and received land from the Colonial government. Have you checked the petitions, grants, surveys for your man in the Colonial Land Grants and also book of petitions which many times name the ship the immigrant arrived on in SC. There was a push to get Irish immigrants to SC and your man may just be one of them. Good Luck on your search. Tree Mother "She is insane, of course. The family history has bcome a mania for her." 1. BRADFORD DNA PROJECT
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/CdB.2ACE/143 Message Board Post: SHAKING THE FAMILY TREE.................... BRADFORD males needed for Family Tree DNA We have been fortunate to receive a Grant to start a Bradford Family DNA project. The immediate focus will be to start with at least one representative of the primary lines: Plymouth, MA, Philadelphia, PA, Maryland, Accomack Co., VA, Charles City Co., VA, Fauquier Co., VA and others. This would give us a firm base. The toughest part of starting a DNA project is to obtain enough results to have meaning, thus the reason for the grant is to give us a database of perhaps 10 individuals. After that it will be up to individuals to purchase their own kit. The Details: 1) sign up 2) send lineage, physical address 3) receive kit 4) return kit 5) wait for results. Pricing after the first ten sign-ups, which will be a 12-marker test (or before if you choose): 12 marker Y-DNA test $99: 25 Marker Upgrade $90: 25 Marker Y-DNA test $169. (+ Postage) The website: http://www.familytreedna.com has answers to your questions, as well as explanatory notes. THE PACE SOCIETY's DNA project can be found at: http://pacesociety.org/DNA/. Click on Results. All is not as thought and it is really interesting, several different Virginia lines. On the concern of giving up your DNA - if your insurance person took a swab of your cheek or drew blood, it's a done deal. If you were born after about 1960+ in a hospital, it's a done deal. In numerous ways, it's a done deal. This is secure in that it uses a numbering system - all is explained on the site. The kit comes to you and you return it, the results come to you and to the Project Administrator for analysis and to build family groups. Unfortunately only Bradford direct male descendants are eligible. The ultimate would be to start with individuals who have an idea of their family five or so generations back. The most recent generations would not be used as an identifier. It isn't necessary to have a 'proven' lineage. Representatives of the 'PRIMARY' lines mentioned above are needed to anchor this Project in order for others to add roots to their tree. As the Project increases it is entirely possible to expand the study to identify the areas of origin of our ancestors across the sea, another reason for a substantial base of primary lines. The purpose of the Project would be to identify 'Family Groups' and the common ancestor of each. The Y chromosome is passed from father to son unchanged, except for a mutation about every 500 generations. With the 12 marker DNA results, the numbers can be compared and family groups designated. The conclusions will be available for the benefit of all. If you have an interest or know a Bradford male who would be interested in participating, use the below addresses to sign up or query. [email protected] Becky Mosely, Project Coordinator THE BRADFORD PROJECT Together we can tear down those 'Brick Walls' ! Participate by passing this information on to all Bradfords REMEMBER, DNA is the Gene in Gene..alogy!

    3. fyi...you might find one that connects to your ancestor... Library of Congress: The Panoramic Photograph Collection contains approximately four thousand images. These panoramas offer an overview of the nation, its enterprises and its interests, with a focus on the start of the twentieth century when the panoramic photo format was at the height of its popularity. The images date from 1851 to 1991 and depict scenes in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. More than twenty foreign countries and a few U.S. territories are also represented. These panoramas average between twenty-eight inches and six feet in length, with an average width of ten inches. Most are World War I and earlier. And, yes, you CAN view them at home on your own computer. http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/pnhtml/pnhome.html
