    1. [SCPICKENS] Martin School
    2. Hi Mrs Childers and others I read in the Old 96 District mailing list that you and your class are searching for information on Old Schools in the Old 96 District. While searching the Martin line of W.W.Martin and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Mills Martin,I came accross A Martin School, which I believe to have been on Martin School Rd. in Pickens,SC. W.W.Martin worked in the Clerk Of Court office of J.M.Stewart,about 1870-90s. I am connected to this line thru their daughter,Sarah Elizabeth Susannah (Martin/Holcombe?) Stewart married to my ggrandfather Daniel Carter Stewart b.1842 Pickens co.SC.,son of Robert Stewart and Elizabeth Durham. There is a Martin collection at Clemson Univ.of some 200 letters belonging to this Martin line. I placed a folder of letters and information from the Pickens co.SC. Stewart line connected to this Martin line at the Faith Clayton genealogy room at Southern Wesleyan Univ. in Central,SC. Anne Sheriff is the curator in the genealogy room there. I have a 2nd cousin, who has a large school book on geography, which belonged to Sarah Elizabeth Susannah Martin/Holcombe Stewart.I suspect the book was connected to the school. Also there is a Barbara Martin in the Oconee area, who still has the original Bell to the School and maybe more information that I have on this Martin School. I realize that this School is not in the areas you mentioned, but it was in the area that was once Old 96 District,I hope you will include it. I will put the email address here of three other Martin searchers, who may have additional information on the Martin School. Thank you and much success with your project. Gay Stewart Beam jimfile@aol Barbara Martin DisMartin @aol Dick Martin Mountaineers2@bellsouth.net Sandy I will put a link here for these three back to your Abbeville,Old96 School page. 3. Hi Gay, Thanks for thinking of me when sharing information. I went to Clemson and looked at those papers. So very awesome to read the letters between Sarah and William Martin during the war. I gleaned several names in hopes of finding out the Martin in-laws but to no avail as yet. Have you gotten any farther? Merry Christmas.. Sandy Hamilton

    3. Also there is a Barbara Martin in the Oconee area, who still has the original Bell to the School Information on Martin School in Pickens was quite interesting and is consistent with some stories shared by my grandfather-in-law, Hovie Martin (b.1901), now deceased. Hovie was the grandson of WW Martin. He claimed to own the bell from the school. It was erected in his yard on a stone pillar which had been constructed specifically for the bell. My husband, now 61 years, and also our children found every opportunity to slip away from the family gatherings long enough to ring the bell. After Hovie's death the bell was placed in the care of a family connection in that area. His children wished the bell to be kept in the area as Martin School. I have been a member of this family for 36 years and find it ironic that another person also claims the "bell". Was there more than one bell erected at the school? Please help me solve this query. 3. I don't know anything about the bell but I was wondering if you have any info on a Phelix Martin. I'm looking for a Phelix Martin who had a son named Paul Sevier. All I know about this family is that Paul's father was Phelix Martin from SC and that he was Irish. Paul Sevier married Minnie Hall early, early 1900 but I don't know where. I was told they (not sure who they was, if it was him and wife or him and father) spent a couple of years in South Georgia before moving to the North. They settled in NW Georgia, walker county.
