Dolores, I have had many hand scanners and while I had some success, they are difficult to use. I would recommend a small flatbed scanner. You need one that will either connect to a parallel port or, if your notebook has one, a USB port. The scanner should come with the software that will allow you to use it. The smaller ones will only scan up to a one 8.5 x 11 size page. The larger ones will do legal size. However, you can scan a document in two pieces and some software will allow you to piece them together afterwards with some degree of success. Most of the office supply places have scanners as well as the larger computer sales places. Flatbeds are advertised from $50 up. You should be able to get one that will do fairly well for $100 or less. I paid more than that for most of my hand scanners in the past. As Marilyn said in another message, the smaller scanners are portable and not much larger than the notebook computer. Another thing the think about is the amount of hard disk space you have on your computer. Scanned images can occupy a large amount of disk space.
