Hi David, If you can find that law please let us know. I have three generations of ancestors buried in the Hodges Family cemetery, just outside Hodges, SC, and the tombstones are being destroyed by people who attend a go-cart track... that was built right beside the cemetery. I've written to everybody who has any authority, from the governor of SC down to the Sheriff of Greenwood County, about this and can get nothing done. I offered to buy the cemetery, put up a fence, etc. and the owner of the property refused. One of the tombstones has been broken into twelve pieces and thrown about!!! If there's a law that says that this little piece of property belongs to the descendants... why can't we go in there and put up a fence and repair the damage that has been done? I sincerely hope that you are right, but I've never seen anything like that. Please let me know what you find... HI Just a thought have you contacted a lawyer for his input or even the Office of the Attorney General , Henry McMaster, Rembert C. Dennis Building, P. O. Box 11549, Columbia, SC 29211-1549, Telephone 803-734-3970, Fax 803-253-6283. Or at least one of these might be able to direct you in the right direction to get the help needed to solve this problem. Let me catch someone defacing a grave or a cemetery and they had better hope that thier soul is right the thier Maker. because thier body will be mine. Lowell McDaniel Now Dorchester Co. The SC Cemetery laws are on the internet. You can find them at this site: http://chicora.org/sc_cemetery_law.htm I believe that Paul Kankula might be responsible for posting them; at least, he sent me the addr and I printed myself a copy off them to have. The JONES Family Cemetery in Pickens County of Hamilton Road which is off Dalton Road has been well kept by the descendants. They put a chain link fence up long ago, and took down the sign that pointed to the cemetery. They put up a strong cable to block the road bed, and then three trees are down just bef. you get to the cemetery. The trees are a nice size, esp. one that is really large. It would be quite a task for anyone to get a vehicle back in there, and it would very difficult to carry a monument or marker out. The cemetery is not close to the main road. Personally, I wish all the old cemeteries could be done that way. Quite a few of my family are buried at old Keowee Baptist (used to be Keowee River Baptist Church), and over recent years, the once dead end road has been converted (by the Corps of Engineers) into a campground on the banks of "new" Lake Keowee. I never cared for the flooding of all the valleys in Pickens County (it's my home) to make Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee, and Lake Jocassee, but since they made the new little campground, the church cemetery has been vandalized over and over again. My GG-G'father's sister once had three small markers for the graves of her three little girls right beside her grave. Over the last few years those sweet little markers have all been carried off. Amazing to me! I do hope some folks' souls are right w/their Maker bec. I, for one, could never sleep at night if I ever did something like that; and my father would have made sure I didn't sleep at night if I had pulled something like that when I was young!!! Mary, there is a coordinator in Pickens County Library in Pickens named....oh boy,...well she goes ,,ok her name is Tracy Parsons - Holder. her email is howdycuzin*aol.com She knows so much and she has dealt with a lot of cemeterys. Ithe last I remember on this subject when I was in Maine, is the landowners can do nothing to harm a cemetery, they have to keep it up. however descendants can get permission from them to go see their sleeping families. the descendants don't OWN the land per say, but they have legal rights to their descendants resting place. Especially if the person that owns the land destroys a cemetery. I think they are very much liable for that..... happing hunting Reba ----- Original Message ----- From: MaryClyde To: SCPICKEN-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2003 9:39 AM Subject: Re: [SCPICKENS] Re: Cemeterys Hi David, If you can find that law please let us know.
