    3. Hi, I know from family stories - both sides - both Carolinas - that in the WBTS there were groups of men on horseback that would come around and take able bodied men to serve. My gr gr grandfather on one side enlisted and served (we have muster roll docs) but like a lot of small subsistence farmers in both the Revolution and WBTS he didn't intend to be gone during the seasons when his family's survival depended on getting the crops sown and harvested. That conflicted with the needs of the army - so the family story goes - when the men came around he would kick out a log in the side of the house and run off down the side of the mountain. Another gr gr grandfather from NC but living near Shiloh, TN when the War began hid in a hollow log to avoid being "conscripted" - Hardin County, TN fielded both Union and Confederate units!!. The guy doin' the conscriptin' didn't care what you're preference was. Nancy PS. Barbara, another gr gr grandfather - Joshua Nelson lived in Greenville County, prior to 1860 - then Transylvania County, NC until after 1870 - and died in Pickens County, SC - the tombstone didn't have a date. Was buried at Holly Springs Church. Are you tracing Nelsons? -----Original Message----- From: Barbara Nelson [mailto:distler5@charter.net] Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2003 4:28 PM To: SCPICKEN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCPICKENS] "CONSCRIPTED" Ronnie - I'm grateful to you for this info.
