Grace, How old would your William Stancil/sell have been in 1864? I copied the following from a book in the Old Pendleton Historical Society, by Capt. Daniel Grice, "Daniel Grice Beat List". - William M. Stansell, age 42, exempted from service in the Confederate 5th Regt., Pickens District, because of a physical disability, Oct 1864. I was searching for info for my ggg grandfather, William "Willis" Stansell/cil, when I found this book, but he would have been about 54 years of age. According to a Confederate Abstract from the SC Dept. of Archives and History he enlisted at Walhalla at age 26. He was a Private in Company G (Bonham Rifles) 12th SC Infantry. He was wounded at Gettysburg July 1, 1862, Captured at Antietam, MD and died at Gettysburg July 2, 1863 of wounds received. His final pay was received by Anna Stancil, his widow. Anna's maiden name was Lee. She was related to my late husbnd, Carroll Sanford Lee, Sr. I have been unable to find a record of her death or burial. She was on the pension roll in Oconee Co., SC in 1919 and that is the last time I have been able to find her. The State has been unsuccessful in locating a death certificate for her. I was hoping to find a relative who might be able to shed some light on her death and burial. Grace S.
