Jane, When I try to do 1860 on Ancestry.com they have very few states that they've done. It's a shame since they could do us so much good! I think that's your problem. Sorry! When I do a search for them I don't pull up any (using Soundex for them also) from upstate of SC.. I know they are there. Does anyone know how/where I could search an index for these counties. Then I could look up the censuses on-line. I truly don't want to do a page-by-page of 3 or 4 counties :). Any help appreciated!!! You will have to figure out the image numbers against the pages at ancestry, but it does save alot of time having a page number. Jane, Hey. The index you're probably using doesn't include SC. Ancestry.com's index you get to through the census images choice is only a partial index which does not include SC. Try the database: South Carolina Census, 1790-1890. I got 52 "hits" on Gillespie w/o specifying any county. Feel free to e-mail me privately if you need help navigating Ancestry.com to find this database. I had the exact same problem for Georgia census searches until I realized there was more than one index available through my subscription. Best of luck! Judy

Pickens Slave Cemetery but I remember it being there from my years as a child. I grew up in the area and had two cousins who were professors at the University then. Later we raised our children there for 20 yrs. when my husband worked for Clemson. If you feel that Hannah was a slave, have you checked the estate sale for Gen. Pickens? If a good detailed one exists, it may be the best way to prove this, or even his will may list it. Several of my ancestors, all in the same area, listed the slaves in their wills. Best wishes in this effort; I would love to know if you are able to prove this, and I will keep my eyes open for you. I do have quite a bit of work; been on this since I was a child, but I'm not sure what you need. Dolores Miller Pringle

However, to the average Joe with a PC would consider this cemetery to be located in the City of Clemson or on the campus of Clemson University. I'm helping a Eagle Scout candidate with his community project. He's going to restore what I call the General Pickens Slave Cemetery that is located on Old Cherry Road near Lake Hartwell - within the University's Poultry Center - in with the chickens & turkeys. There are two readable tombstone inscriptions and I'm trying to prove that Hannah was a Slave. To change the subject - I'm collecting white-paper donations for a History WebPage that I'm putting together for my Oconee County GenWeb Project. Seeing that you know something about the Clemson area... seeing that the University area and south belonged to Oconee prior to 1968... would you have any papers that you would like to donate and have preserved in the GenWeb Archives?

This person may have lived in the area but at that time the nearest towns were Pendleton and Seneca. The area where Clemson is was the plantation of John C. CALHOUN, VP of the United States. At his death is passed to his son-in-law, Thomas Green CLEMSON. When he died he willed the entire farm to the state of SC for the establishment of an agricultural and mechanical engineering college, hence the present day Clemson University which began as a military men's college. Women were not admitted until the mid-60s. There was a train depot where the cadets caught the train nearby, and this area was called CALHOUN Corners. Today that is a part of the town of Clemson, SC. The town only grew into a town quite a while aft. the founding of Clemson in 1889. There were churches fairly near that have served the folks living in the area, and your Hannah REESE may certainly be buried at a church that currently has a Clemson, SC, address. I checked the cemetery books for Pickens Co. (where Clemson, SC, is) and found no REESEs except one, and it was not Hannah. Also checked for REECE and REAVES/REEVES; nothing there either. You may want to check the Oconee Co. website (SCGenweb) to see if there is a burial on there. There is also a chance that the burial took place in Anderson Co. Clemson is located at the juncture of these three counties. Back in the 1950s the town voted to become a part of Pickens Co. rather than continue being split into three counties. I got curious and checked the 1850 census for Pickens and Oconee Co. (Eastern and Western Pickens Dist. then) and found no one spelled REECE but found several named REESE w/ no Hannah. Sorry this does not help you at all, but I will be happy to look further if you can give me any more info. Please let me hear from you. You can write me at dmpringle@sc.rr.com Dolores M. Pringle
