    3. I've never seen a copy of those but would be interested in seeing them if anyone finds them. I can inquire from my DAR Chapter abt them. I have the three cemetery books that were done by many devoted and tireless workers abt 10-15 yrs. ago for Pickens Co. They are wonderful, and I use mine all the time. Do you need a particular lookup? 3. Hi, I know from family stories - both sides - both Carolinas - that in the WBTS there were groups of men on horseback that would come around and take able bodied men to serve. My gr gr grandfather on one side enlisted and served (we have muster roll docs) but like a lot of small subsistence farmers in both the Revolution and WBTS he didn't intend to be gone during the seasons when his family's survival depended on getting the crops sown and harvested. That conflicted with the needs of the army - so the family story goes - when the men came around he would kick out a log in the side of the house and run off down the side of the mountain. Another gr gr grandfather from NC but living near Shiloh, TN when the War began hid in a hollow log to avoid being "conscripted" - Hardin County, TN fielded both Union and Confederate units!!. The guy doin' the conscriptin' didn't care what you're preference was. Nancy PS. Barbara, another gr gr grandfather - Joshua Nelson lived in Greenville County, prior to 1860 - then Transylvania County, NC until after 1870 - and died in Pickens County, SC - the tombstone didn't have a date. Was buried at Holly Springs Church. Are you tracing Nelsons? -----Original Message----- From: Barbara Nelson [mailto:distler5@charter.net] Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2003 4:28 PM To: SCPICKEN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCPICKENS] "CONSCRIPTED" Ronnie - I'm grateful to you for this info. 3. Shirley; The persons that were resident in the household 'as of the census date' were enumerated. The 'Census Date' is established in advance of the census year and varied from one census year to the next on some occasions. I can't recall what the date was on each census but I know that I have an Info File with at least part of them noted. I believe the 1800, 1810 & 1820 all had the same 'as of date' but don't hold me to that. Jerry Sanford P.S. Shirley, do you have a new address now that replaces the MSN address? I tried sending you some Info about 2 or 3 weeks ago because of that. I know that you told me earlier that you were not happy with MSN. 3. When it comes to census they have found everything depended on the census taker and what info the family would provide for him. Also you have to take in account they have found that some census takers didn't even ask some of the families because they knew them so they would write down what they thought the info was. At best it is all a guess. You just have to lay all the census out on an individual and try to piece together what you have taking into account we are all human and bound to play jokes, make mistakes, miss spell and basically act human. 1. [SCPICKENS] "CONSCRIPTED"
    2. Barbara Nelson
    3. Ronnie - I need your help. My HIRAM REEVES was 'conscripted' by Pickens County. What does this mean? How may I find out about it? He and his brother, JOHN, served together; however, notes say that JOHN was in the hospital in PICKENS, SC, when HIRAM was conscripted. Help...first time I've seen this word in a message. Thanks, Barb ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dolores Pringle" <dmpringle@sc.rr.com> To: <SCPICKEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 04, 2003 12:38 AM Subject: [SCPICKENS] From Dolores: DeForest Miller > Ronnie, > Bless you! 3. And...you never know! He may pop up from behind that "rock" just when you are not expecting it! I'll keep my eyes open, and as soon as I can, I will send you a couple of pictures that I wanted to share with you. Things have been a bit crazy here w/ sniffles, sick doggie, ailing parents, etc. I'll get those to you ASAP. God bless, Dolores -----Original Message----- From: CASPERCITO@aol.com [mailto:CASPERCITO@aol.com] Sent: Monday, February 03, 2003 10:52 PM To: SCPICKEN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCPICKENS] Confederate soldiers - Look Up - Isaac Gillespie Hi Dolores - I'm starting to think he either is buried on the old farm, wherever that may be or joined the Union Army. A grandaunt has an Ellis Family bible in which some information on the Gillespies was added, but Isaac was not listed. (His brother James Monroe Gillespie married Mary Elisabeth Ellis in 1877, so he could have been a "black sheep" and left out. Oh, well. I guess I should be happy I have 5 of 6 siblings well documented. Dave ==== SCPICKEN Mailing List ==== We have over 234 members of the Pickens Co., SC Mailing List.
