    1. Re: [SCPICKENS] Old Homestead on the Tugaloo River
    2. Hello all- Lake Hartwell happened on the GA side, but I am not sure if it affected water level on SC side. Also, I am told by a friend who lives on the GA side that some contemporaries of Almon Powell are buried at Old Liberty cemetery. Is it possible he is buried there in an unmarked grave? Cynthia

    3. It is possible. If I could locate the homestead or figure out where it was then I would have a better idea. Why do you ask about it being under water. Did something happen that changed the water course of the river? 3. In 1822 Almon Powell purchased 300 acres from Richard Holden on Tugaloo River in Pendleton District. This area became Pickens County. Then in 1835 he purchased additional land along Brasstown Road in two different places along the above mentioned 300 acres. There is record of their homestead being on this property. I have never been able to find the burial place of Almon and his wife Elizabeth Powell. My question is, are there any old homesteads along the Tugaloo River which could be this old? I am wondering if there are family grave yards that have not been surveyed.. Almon Powell died in Horse Shoe, Pickens Co., SC 1857 and Elizabeth died between 1860 and 1970. Kathleen Burnett

I transcribed these during a March visit to the South Carolina Conference's archives at Wofford College in Spartanburg. June 9, 1892 page 5 "Berry. We had a short but pleasant call from Rev. B.O. Berry on Monday. He is visiting relatives and friends in this county, and expects to return to his charge in Pickens in a few days.Pee Dee Index." > "Walhalla, Westminster, Easley, Fountain Inn, Townville, Pendleton.I send a few further notes of our field. May 7th, I visited Walhalla and found the pastor in favor with his charge and hard at work. Everything promises a successful year. A week later I had the pleasure of staying in the Westminster circuit parsonage. It is comfortable and cosy. The circuit showed an advance on last year. The next week we had a delightful Conference at Antioch, on Easley circuit. Two joined and all had a good time. The pastor had held fine meetings at Easley and Ruhamah. The Stewards made a good showing. The only trouble here is that the pastor will work too hard--beyond his strength. The workman should not be slack, but ought not to overtax himself. Leaving Antioch I went and helped in a meeting at Fountain Inn for a few days. Good has already been done and the meeting is still in progress. The new parsonage will be ready by June 15, and the new church has been ceiled and will have seats at once. Townville comes next. She did not lead the circuit on collections this time, but passed last year's records. Pastor Wright has been sick, but keeps the work going. Pendleton was our last point. She is moving forward as has been her custom. One good meeting has been held. A prosperous year seems certain. The next Conference will be held at Sandy Spring camp meeting, which begins Monday night, September 12th, and closes Saturday morning, September 17th. We want the editor of our Advocate with us. Please come. All want you. John O. Willson. June 6, 1892." __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. Because of more pressing issues, the preservation/restoration of pioneer cemeteries are a very-very low priority with county board officials. (A state representative is really needed to "champion" a new preservation law) Boy Scouts who have now become Eagle Scout candidates, are really the ones who have responded to this community need! The Scout will typically use the cemetery restoration task to fulfill their Eagle leadership community project requirement. These kids do excellent work and they are always supervised by adults. My gr gr gr grandfather, Enoch Chapman, was buried there. I doubt that it can be found now with the trees grown up around it - but with all the construction going on in Pickens County - it would be good to try and identify the spot before someone digs up the graves unknowingly to put in a housing development. He was married to Rebecca Porter Young, widow of Stephen Young, and they did not have any children together. Enoch had children by his first wife (name unknown - died in Hall County, GA in early 1830s) Enoch died about 1855 based on when Rebecca began signing deeds by herself. In the 1960's, Cousin Will Harper described the grave site as having about five graves together "way out in that sag. Old Man Enoch was buried right up that hollar". Both Will Harper and his cousin, Ira Chapman, Sr. said that Enoch was buried beside the road, close to the spot where he had been found. Will Harper's daughter gave the directions to me as follows: Go west on 178 until you come to Meece Mill Road, continue past Gravely's Store over a slight rise and then, on your right, is the bank whereon Enoch was buried. At one time, soapstone markers designated the resting places of at least five people. On the audio tape an elderly woman who lived nearby came out to see what was going on and Will called her "Mrs. Cantrell". She knew of the graves, but said the stones had disappeared long ago and asked Will, Nettie and Vivian to come in and talk for a while. She volunteered that "Gip Porter was her grandfather". And mentioned her "Granny Becky Chapman"! But Will had company on the way that afternoon and neither Will nor Vivian apparently realized the significance of her reference. This elderly lady was Enoch Chapman's widows' great-grandchild! What a wealth of information she may have been able to impart. So before someone accidentally digs up the graves and says the occupants are unidentifiable - it would be nice to go on record somewhere that DNA could identify at least one of the people buried there. 3. I can tell you that there is a group of graves on a hillside off Hwy 178 not far from the old Gravely grocery.
