    3. Delores, Thanks for the site with the information about the laws. The problem is... they have to be caught destroying these tombstones before anybody can do anything... I don't live near enough to go to all of these go-cart races... Some workers from Chicora Foundation in Columbia have been doing repairs on some of the tombstones at my church, Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church in Lancaster... So far they have done a good job! It really costs a lot to repair damage that has been done by some stupid, irresponsible idiot!!! I don't see how they sleep at night either... Thank you for responding... 3. The SC Cemetery laws are on the internet. You can find them at this site: http://chicora.org/sc_cemetery_law.htm I believe that Paul Kankula might be responsible for posting them; at least, he sent me the addr and I printed myself a copy off them to have. The JONES Family Cemetery in Pickens County of Hamilton Road which is off Dalton Road has been well kept by the descendants. They put a chain link fence up long ago, and took down the sign that pointed to the cemetery. They put up a strong cable to block the road bed, and then three trees are down just bef. you get to the cemetery. The trees are a nice size, esp. one that is really large. It would be quite a task for anyone to get a vehicle back in there, and it would very difficult to carry a monument or marker out. The cemetery is not close to the main road. Personally, I wish all the old cemeteries could be done that way. Quite a few of my family are buried at old Keowee Baptist (used to be Keowee River Baptist Church), and over recent years, the once dead end road has been converted (by the Corps of Engineers) into a campground on the banks of "new" Lake Keowee. I never cared for the flooding of all the valleys in Pickens County (it's my home) to make Lake Hartwell, Lake Keowee, and Lake Jocassee, but since they made the new little campground, the church cemetery has been vandalized over and over again. My GG-G'father's sister once had three small markers for the graves of her three little girls right beside her grave. Over the last few years those sweet little markers have all been carried off. Amazing to me! I do hope some folks' souls are right w/their Maker bec. I, for one, could never sleep at night if I ever did something like that; and my father would have made sure I didn't sleep at night if I had pulled something like that when I was young!!! 3. Mary, You need to get a lawyer because I think there is a very large fine for every grave that is disturbed and a lawsuit would be in order as they can be made to fix the cemetery like it was the best they can. I have been in contact with one of our Fowler Cemeterys in Greenville and they sued and a very large sum was collected and they landowners paid dearly. I will try to find the folks and that sued and their lawyer so contact me personally and I will try to help. 3. Dear Dolores, I'm looking for info on Millers and I don't know which ones but in reading your info on Millers here two things stuck out. George and Jesse. Could you tell me about George and Jesse. I have a George and a Jesse in my line that I'm stuck with. They are buried in Sugar Valley, Gordon county GA. They received land in the 1832 land lottery. Some of them came from Hancock county GA and Baldwin county. I think they ended up in these counties because of the land lottery of 1820 and 1827. Also about your Mayfield. Have you run a check through Access Genealogies program on Indians? It's a free site on internet. Also have you tried spelling it Meyfield and Meyfeld? These are two spellings for Mayfield. Did your Millers live near the Cherry's and Torberts? If so Meyfeld would be the best spelling to find Mayfield. There were several other ways to spell it. I'll look it up and get back to you with the other spellings. Isaac MILLER, Sr. was a son of George MILLER and his wf. Mary who settled in Old Pendleton Dist., SC (in the part that is now Pickens Co., SC). George MILLER settled in this area when it was still Indian land. I have been told by elderly historians in the county that he was most likely the first white man to live there. > > Elizabeth MAYFIELD MILLER died abt 1855. I have searched in many places and gotten no where with her; she is a definite brick wall. I have also been told that she was Indian - was she??? I've tried looking among the Indian info on the internet and mailing lists and had absolutely not one reply nor found one piece of info. > > There were many MAYFIELDs in Old Pendleton Dist., some of whom lived near the MILLERS. Was Elizabeth a dau of one of them? All of Elizabeth and Isaac's children were named "MILLER family names" except for the following: William J.and Isabella. The other names, which are well-used MILLER names, are Barbara, Esther, Mary , Isaac, III, George, Jesse. > > Elizabeth has me intrigued, but I'm at a point where I would really like to be able to place her with her parents. 3. Hi David, If you can find that law please let us know. I have three generations of ancestors buried in the Hodges Family cemetery, just outside Hodges, SC, and the tombstones are being destroyed by people who attend a go-cart track... that was built right beside the cemetery. I've written to everybody who has any authority, from the governor of SC down to the Sheriff of Greenwood County, about this and can get nothing done. I offered to buy the cemetery, put up a fence, etc. and the owner of the property refused. One of the tombstones has been broken into twelve pieces and thrown about!!! If there's a law that says that this little piece of property belongs to the descendants... why can't we go in there and put up a fence and repair the damage that has been done? I sincerely hope that you are right, but I've never seen anything like that. Please let me know what you find...
