Dolores, I have had many hand scanners and while I had some success, they are difficult to use. I would recommend a small flatbed scanner. You need one that will either connect to a parallel port or, if your notebook has one, a USB port. The scanner should come with the software that will allow you to use it. The smaller ones will only scan up to a one 8.5 x 11 size page. The larger ones will do legal size. However, you can scan a document in two pieces and some software will allow you to piece them together afterwards with some degree of success. Most of the office supply places have scanners as well as the larger computer sales places. Flatbeds are advertised from $50 up. You should be able to get one that will do fairly well for $100 or less. I paid more than that for most of my hand scanners in the past. As Marilyn said in another message, the smaller scanners are portable and not much larger than the notebook computer. Another thing the think about is the amount of hard disk space you have on your computer. Scanned images can occupy a large amount of disk space. Hey there to all; I have not personally had the greatest success with handheld scanners and have tried a couple of brands. However, there are several models of flat bed scanners that are very small, very portable and do a terrific job. Traveled with a little one by Canon for a couple of years that was not much bigger than my ThinkPad and wasn't real expensive. Have used it to copy documents and many photographs with success. Just a thought. Fried it and now am hunting for another one to replace it that doesn't require a USB port and will use a parallel port... still looking. If your laptop is a model from the past year or two, it probably has a USB on it. Marilyn

Traci, Where may I purchase a hand scanner with a nice decent price? Help me please; I don't seem to be able to find one. Thank you, Dolores I want to use one on some of the pages I already have, etc. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2001 3:00 PM Subject: [SCPICKENS] Exciting NEWS for the Pickens Researchers!!! > Howdy all!! > > I have some VERY exciting news!! Dear List Members, This site was shared with me today and I am thrilled with it. If you have or might have ancestors who were from Virginia, you need to check this one out. Plan on spending some time. There is a lot of information. http://www.lva.lib.va.us/dlp/index.htm "The Library of Virginia's Digital Library Program (DLP) is an internationally recognized effort to preserve, digitize, and provide access to significant archival and library collections. The DLP transfers rare and unique Virginia materials into an integrated, user-friendly electronic research environment. Since its inception in 1995, the Program has digitized more than 2.2 million original documents, photographs, and maps, and produced more than 80 fully-searchable databases, indexes, and electronic finding aids."
we'll see what kind've schedule we're on and I'll be glad to help.. got some over there I wouldn't mind having myself. Sandy H
Howdy all!! I have some VERY exciting news!! I just got off the phone with the Pickens Co., Probate court and they have agreed to let me go in and take my scanner and copy ALL indexes or files I wish. If you live in Pickens, I could sure use some help. (the work would go faster if there are two or three taking turns scanning and shooting to the laptop.) This is very easy to use so dont let the thought of 'gadgets' skeer you away from helping!! Warm Regards, Traci Parsons-Holder

Another daughter who married a Davis moved south. But around our Coxes who also moved south (Edgefield SC) are Hixes and Hiltons. These bear looking into. I have a feeling these are all connected somehow. I am going to contact the cousin who has done the most SC research and see what I can find out. I'll let you know. Lou Ann

My John Cox who married Elce Hix had a sister who married a Hilton. Wouldn't surprise me to find some of the Hixes of that family marrying into the Hiltons also. As I recall the Hilton family moved to SC...no doubt with some of the Hixes. Will dig into this and see what else I can find out. It may be the key to the ancestry of your Hixes. Lou Ann

Posted on: Pickens County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/SC/Pickens/10804 Surname: WALDROP ------------------------- Great grand daughter of Elijah Waldrop and Ida Mcgaha of Pickens county South Carolina. My grand father was Joeceaphus Waldrop born 8/12/1905, the oldest of 5 sons born to Elijah and Ida, the other are Jim, Arthur, Counel and Willie. I think that Elijha died in 1937, 1938 or 1939 by hanging himself. I think that he had 1 brother, Joe. I believe Ida Mcgaha was a Cherokee Indian and had brothers, no information on them. Would like any information on any of the members of this family. Thank you.
