Mungo Mackay was agent and general manager for the Lothian Coal Company from 1890's right up to nearly the start of World War Two. He wasn't very tolerant of drinking among the miners either! He supposedly struck terror into those working for him. There is an excellent book called - Mungo Mackay and the Green Table - Newtongrange Miners Remember ISBN 1 898410 66 6 by Ian MacDougall I have no interest in this publication - it is just a very good, informative read for those looking at mining ancestors in this part of Midlothian.
