Hello, I am new to this list, my name is Peter Johnstone. My query concerns my gt-grandfather Peter Johnston and he worked,I believe, in various coal mines in the East/Midlothian area. The period I am concerned with is between 1861 and 1871. During this period he was living in Sauchenside, Chesterhill, Midlothian and I presume he was at the time working at Edgehead Colliery. He also died during this period (date not known) and in the 1871 census his wife,Jane, is described as an Annuitant. What I would like to know is, was this annuity a compensation award in the case of Peter having a fatal accident at work or was he prudent enough (rare in those days) to provide a pension for his wife in case of his demise?
