Does anyone have history an information on mines in this area - My grandfather and two uncles worked in one around the Salsburgh area - the name was Dewshill. I know from family research my grandfather Patrick Haggerty worked in the mines in 1908 - who owned these mines and can we still get information on employees names? Any information would be greatly appreciated - thank you.
Does any have information about coal mines in this area of Lanarkshire? I am looking for any information on any coal mines in Slamannan, Stirling, Scotland. My Grandfather worked in one in 1917-20. His Father and Grandfather as well. They immigrated to Canada, namely British Columbia looking for work in the coal mines there in the early 20's. My Great-great Grandfather came out earlier, atleast 1915. Many immigrants from Scotland located in the Nicola Valley as there were 2 coal mines there at that time. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Kerry Clark 2931 Telemon Place Merritt, B.C. I am researching my family - RANKINE - who were miners in West Lothian, mainly in Carriden then West Calder. According to the 1881 census, my GG Grandfather, John Rankine, was a Shale Miner living in West Calder. If anyone has any information on Rankine's in that area I would be very grateful. I'm new to the list, and I'm researching the name KIRSOP. Edward Kirsop was born in Alston, Cumberland in 1781, his father was a (presumably lead) miner, and Edward moved to Strontian Argyll and married Margaret Cameron in 1805. He had become Overseer of Mines in Strontian, Argyll by 1814. He lived at one stage in Scotstown. Any information on KIRSOPS, or sources of information on the mining activities aiound Strontian very welcome! Alan Bird
Ian Winstanley informs me that his ISP has changed names & his website will be unavailable to later on this week. I'll post the URL later on. Cheers Jim Rouse -- www.tasmail.com
Hello everybody, Just subscribed last night. Anybody out there with an interest in the Auchenstarry, Smithston and Croy Rows (all miners rows) in Cumbernauld District of Dunbartonshire. Most males of previous generations in my family-lines worked in the pits of this area upuntil the pits closed). My interests are both historical and genealogical. Perhaps interested parties can share and learn together. Incidentally, the mining population was very mobile for several decades last century, so my family connections involve Ireland, Ayrshire, Stirlingshire and Lanarkshire before settling in the above-named miners' rows. Contact me initially on the list. Neil McBride O'Neill
Hello list members: My coalmining SIMPSON ancestors lived at the above addresses in Hamilton, Scotland between 1881-1891, I believe! Are the above addresses housing owned by the mine? Any information would be most appreciated! Sincerely, Mike Higney
Auchenharvie Row, Saltcoats 1922 Report by Mr James Brown (Annbank) and Mr Mckerrall (Miners Agent). Auchenharvie Row, Saltcoats contained twenty-two houses, twelve single apartment houses and ten 2-apartments. One room measured sixteen feet by nine feet and one twelve feet by six feet. One apartment measured sixteen feet by nine feet, the floors were brick tiles, broken and twisted. Each house was provided with a water closet and there was a wash house for every three tenants. All tenants had coal-houses, the roadway in front of the houses was unpaved and very dirty. The rent of the 2-apartment was 10/2 per month and the one apartment 7/11 per month. There were no ash-pits, but dust bins were provided. The syvers were usually very sluggish and were lying filled with stagnant water as often as not. There were several taps for gravitation water serving the row. These houses were demolished in 1924. A report on Ardeer Square is also available on our Stevenston pages at threetowners.com PS Good show Jim, a genuine list for us yins! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ _--_|\ http://www.threetowners.com "Ayrshire Folk" / \ email: [email protected] \_.--._/ __ Hugh McCallum in o Melbourne Australia ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hullo Fellow Researchers, I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome to the new list. Firstly, why such a list? Well, probably like a lot of you, I've been a subscriber to the Coalminers List (& still am) but most of the posts on that list whilst they're of interest are not really doing much to advance my research. A few other researchers had expressed the desire to see a Scottish Mining list so we set one up. At some point in the very near future, we'll have some associated WebPages of useful pertinent research information, & with your co-operation, an online database of members' research interests & contact details. I hope you find this new list of benefit to you & your research, There are a number of very knowledgeable list members that are most helpful & willing to help other researchers. If you can contribute or assist other members then please do. All of the messages ever sent to the list are archived and can be searched for the surnames that interest you. The search URL is: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Remember that in most cases your messages should be addressed to the entire list at [email protected] That way everyone gets the benefit of your questions and any answers you receive. Thanks for joining our group. If you have any suggestions or ideas on improving the list, please let me know. It's YOUR list and will flourish if we all contribute. We look forward to helping you with your research. If you have any questions or problems, please do not hesitate to contact me for help on list related matters, however all research matters should be addressed through the list. Cheers <>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<> Jim Rouse, Administrator of YOUR list <>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<> -- www.tasmail.com

Hello Everyone, I've just joined the list so here are my Scottish coalmining interests: Virtually every member of my KNOX tree for which I have a known occupation seems to have been a coalminer of some sort. >From the 1881 Census I have found that: My ancestor James KNOX (born Dailly, Ayr, 1839) was a Colliery Manager at Ricccarton or Hurlford and that at least two of his sons - James and William - were Pit Engine Keepers in the same area. James' brother, John KNOX (born Dailly 1841) was a Colliery Engine Keeper and his son James was a Junior Clerk Colliery also at Hurlford. Another brother, Joseph (born Dailly 1844) my direct line ancestor, was and Engine Driver Coalpit at Cockpen, Edinburgh. His second wife Janet is listed as "Engine Driver's Wife" and his son James (my great great grandad) as a Check Weight Winder. They lived in Polton Hall 3 and I believe there was a pit called Polton pit which must have been where they worked. A fourth brother, William KNOX ( born Dailly 1835) was listed as Engine Keeper at Polton and they also had a lodger, James MCKAY who was a coal miner. Another relative, nephew, as far as I can tell, of James, John, Joseph and William whose name was James Hamilton KNOX was also an Engine Keeper and seemed to flit between Cockpen and Riccarton. I would like to find out more about the jobs which my ancestors performed, the pits in which they worked and the sort of life they would have had there. And also more about the people themselves. It is an old family story that my grandfather's uncle George Knox, who was reknowned throughout his family and his home village of Bonnyrigg, Midlothian as a mean and greedy man, "got what was coming to him" when he came to a painful and untimely end in a terrible pit accident. I would love to know more! George would have been born in about 1890, probably in Bonnyrigg which is part of Cockpen. If anyone can shed any light on the questions and queries above or thinks they might link to any of the people mentioned please let me know and we can swap information! Happy Researching, Daisy
