    3. I read the story and then made a copy for my mom and sent a copy to our family email list and have had many responses. We are still trying to find the details of our Robert Nesbit's death in the coal mine in Ayr in 1857. 3. Hi Jim: You are doing a wonderful job at your McMINES site. Congratulations! You asked if anyone had access to materials they'd like to share with the list. I'd like to see if there are any other folk out there with an interest in the Polmaise 3 & 4 collieries in Lanarkshire. To that end, I am willing to do lookups in a booklet put together by Archie Bone a retired miner. In it, he has reprinted articles about fatalities in the pits, as well as showing pictures of some of the miners and some mine history. Quote: "The pages in the book are all taken from newspaper cuttings from "The Stirling Observer and the "Stirling Journal" who gave great coverage to all of the mining accidents." 3. Hi all, I've finally made a start on the Sottish-Mining (McMines) webpages. They're far from finished, but you can view them as they are at www.mcpitz.com I'm working on the maps right now, so only 1-10 are currently available, but there should be twice that amount later today (24th Jan). Those of you who have mailed me your Research Interests might notice the database isn't up to date, but I'll fix that later on this week, it seems that Microsoft's products don't seem to transfer into HTML very well, as sorting the list of email addresses out has stuffed them up, but I'll find a solution. :-) So please be patient, your details will appear very soon! Any comments or contributions are most welcome, any stories, or photos or if you have any resources with which you can assist other researchers with. If you're missing mail from other lists over the past few days, it might be attributable to this. Cheers Jim Rouse

    3. I have previously asked for help in getting more info on my Friend Dave Ewarts Grandfather DAVID EWART. I have since found out that his full name was DAVID EWART. He was born possibly in New Stevenson, Strathclyde. Scotland. He was a miner. He married a Sarah Clark or Clarke prior to emigrating to South Africa (SA). He had four children Nellie born 1898, Paul Alexander born in Springs South Africa 1901. William David born Springs SA and Margaret who was born in New Stevenson Scotland in 1908. Sarah returned home for the birth. David died in Germaston SA sometime in the 1930's. Sarah died in Durban SA in 1945/46. Unfortunately I have no exact date of birth or place for either Sarah or David Ewart. I guess he must have emigrated to SA sometime in the 1890's. Any help with above will be greatly appreciated by myself and Dave. Bob Blackwell Howick South Africa e-mail [email protected]

    2. Margaret Teague
    3. Does your friend have any information on his grandfather already? An area of Scotland where he lived before immigrating? A birthdate etc.? As you probably already know there was a significant portion of Scots who were miners in the late 19th century and few records generated regarding specifically miners as far as I know. Has he searched for his grandfather in census records? That would be the first place I would look. One can generally make an informed assumption on a miner's employer from his place of residence. Also is your friend aware that miners in Scotland moved quite frequently? I would also suggest searching for birth, and marriage certificates if he doesn't have those to help construct a family background. I have researched my own grandfather, a coalminer, an immigrant to America from Scotland, and would be happy to share what I have learned about researching if it would help but would need to know more specifically what he knows and what he wants to find out about his grandfather.
