Are you going to be away from your email for a while? There is a good chance you may not be subscribed to your Rootsweb list when you return. If your email mailbox fills, your service provider will begin returning (or "bouncing") messages sent to the list back to Rootsweb. After a certain number of these returns (anywhere from 4 to 8 depending on circumstances) you will be automatically removed from the mailing list. There is no way to tell the list you are on vacation and "hold" your mail. Any messages that are bounced will not appear in your email inbox. (But they aren't gone forever ... see below about the list archives.) How do you ensure you're still on the list after you return? If you haven't seen any postings for a few days, you can send a new email to LIST-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word SUBSCRIBE in the message body. "LIST" is the name of the list you wish to subscribe to, so be sure to substitute that name for LIST. If you wish to subscribe to the digest version, substitute a -D for the -L in the address. If you send a subscription request and you're already on the list, Rootsweb rejects the request -- you will not be double-subscribed to the list in the same mode. (You can subscribe yourself in both -L and -D modes but why would you want to get the same postings twice?) Or you can send me a message and I'll manually check the subscription list for your email address. Want to remove yourself from the list so your mailbox won't fill up with postings while you're gone? Two approaches are possible. One is to switch to Digest mode which will combine a day's postings into one email message. This will lessen the number of messages you receive from the list and it may prevent you from being automatically removed from the list. To do this approach, send a message to LIST-D-request@rootsweb.com (substituting the list name for LIST) with only the word SUBSCRIBE in the message body to add yourself to the list in Digest mode, then send an email to LIST-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the message body to remove yourself from the list in Regular mode. The other approach is to unsubscribe from the list entirely while your gone and re-subscribe when you return. To remove yourself, send an email to LIST-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the message body to remove yourself from the list in Regular mode. Substitute -D for -L if you are using Digest mode. What did I miss while I'm on vacation and/or not subscribed? Archives of all messages posted to the list by month are archived at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/LIST where the web page address ending ending of LIST is changed to the name of the list you wish to view. Another way to view postings to the list would be to use a searchable version of the archive. This method allows you to search by keyword for each year of the list by pointing your web browser to: http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=LIST where the web page address ending of LIST is changed to the name of the list you wish to search. Confused? Have questions? Something doesn't seem to work? Send me an email describing the problem, what you want done, and the name of the list and I'll respond to you in a timely fashion.
