I assume the name Winfield is due to Lt. Gen. Winfield Scott who at 74 led the Union Army when the Civil War first broke out. He joined the Army in 1808, was in the War of 1812 and was the Whig Party's presidential candidate in 1852. He weighed over 300 lbs. and had trouble sitting on a horse. He died in 1866 and is buried in New York at West Point. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, September 22, 2001 11:04 PM To: [email protected] Subject: SCOTT-D Digest V01 #128 << Message: ATT00028.eml (497 bytes) >> << Message: [SCOTT] SCOTT, Ira to Willie Whitfield VA-WV>OH>IN>MO 1793-1900 (1.13 KB) >>
General Winfield Scott was also 6' 6" or more so the weight is not as much as it seems, and he never "liked" riding. I suppose he was "to tall in the saddle".
