Hi, I'm new to the list and I am inquiring to see if anyone has any information on my Scott family. My 4th great grandfather's name was William Scott Matheson, he was born in Scotland. He ran away from home when he was a boy and got on a ship bound for America. An older relative came with him. The shipmates called him Scott because of his Scottish brogue. It's said because of this brogue, he changed his name from William Scott Matheson to William Matheson Scott. When they landed in Kingston Canada, there were relatives there. One brother named Robert and 2 sisters, one of them was named Isobel. They didn't like the fact that he had changed his name. Isabel traced the Matheson name back to the Marques of Lorne who later became the 8th Duke of Argyll of Scotland. She had all of the papers to prove this, however they were burned in a fire and so no proof existed that they were Matheson's. So the Scott named stood. However, my 2nd great grandfather had a Hymnal with his father's name written down as James Scott Matheson. This Hymnal has been passed down to Gene Scott Fadden, and then again to Scott James Dent. If there is anyone out there who can make any sense out of this and has any information about this family, please let me know. Thank You Carolyn Tucker [email protected]
