    1. Brick Wall: (Richard; father of) Sarah Scott 1788(ish) -18 Nov 1852 Maryland
    2. For over a year, the following Baltimore Sun obituary has frustrated me. I am stumped. "Ellen Gosnell died at the home of her son-in-law Mr. Jacob W. Myers, 323 North Stricker Street, Baltimore County, near Ellicott City. Mrs. Gosnell was in her seventy-eighth year and relict of the late Thomas B. Gosnell, for many years a bailiff in the Howard County Circuit Court. She was a second cousin of Gen. Winfield Scott. Her maiden name was Shipley, and her mother was a daughter of Richard Scott, who was a soldier of 1812, and uncle of General Scott. She leaves four children, namely; Messrs. Upton S., Charles S.,and Thomas G. Gosnell, and Mrs. Jacob W. Myers, all of Baltimore, and sixteen grandchildren." Here's a little more information for you all: Ellen Shipley Gosnell 28 Oct 1814-30 May 1892 was the daughter of Henry Shipley 8 Jan 1783-19 Aug 1833 and Sarah Ann Scott 1788(ish)-18 Nov 1852. And so...**who** is Sarah Scott Shipley's father, Richard Scott, and *where* does Richard come from? Thank you for reading my wall of agony, Kim :)

Family lore has it that they came from Scotland. Their son, Samuel Scott, was born 1774, Camden District, SC. He died 1847 in Powder Springs, GA. I do not know who the other siblings of Samuel were.

    1. Scott - Williamsburg Co., SC
    2. John Scott, Sr., supposedly born 19 Apr 1773 Williamsburg Co., SC, supposedly died 9 May 1820 Williamsburg Co., SC. His will was written 29 Apr 1820 and proved 16 Jun 1820. He names his second wife Rebecca (Ervin Scott or Gordon, anybody know for sure?), child to be born of this wife (John Ervin Scott, married Mary M. and Hannah Marion Ervin LeSesne) and children from his first wife - Joseph, Sarah Margaret Scott (married David and James Lowry), John Thomas Scott (married Elizabeth Amelia McGill), William Robert Scott (married Jane Caroline McGill), Albert Alexander McCrea Scott (married Jennet Montgomery Scott), and Samuel James Washington Scott (married Susanna Jane Reardon). According to "History of Williamsburg" by William Boddie, John Scott, Sr. had a brother named Hon. Joseph Scott, Sr. Does anyone know who the parents of John Scott, Sr. are? Does anyone know who the first wife of John Scott, Sr. is? Also, William Robert Scott, b. 6 July 1832 Williamsburg Co., SC, d. 17 Nov 1886, Hempstead Co., AR (son of John Thomas Scott and Elizabeth Amelia McGill) married a Sarah C., b. 17 Dec 1826 in South Carolina, d. 24 Sep 1899 Hempstead Co., AR. She and William Robert are both buried at Marlbrook Cem. in Hempstead Co. AR. I don't know if they were married in SC or AR. Their first child, my 2nd great grandmother Emma, was b. 13 Feb 1860 in Camden, Ouachita Co., AR, so my guess is that her parents arrived in AR a short time before that date along with William Robert Scott's McGill aunts and uncles. Does anyone know who Sarah C., the wife of William Robert Scott, is? Thanks for taking the time to read this. Any info or clues will be greatly appreciated, and, I'm always willing to share what info I have. Aleta Pope Hudson Columbia, SC

    3. Seeking information about the parents of and probable immigration of a Walter SCOTT. When his first wife, Esther (surname unknown) died in Cecil Co., MD, Walter m. a Grace RUMSEY and had an additional family. Based on the Mormon IGI file Film No. 2034384, Walter and Esther were the parents of my John SCOTT, reportedly b. ca. 1695 in St. Steven's Parish, Cecil Co., MD, died ca. Oct 1760 in Rowan Co., NC. . There is a mention of my John SCOTT in Ramsey's "Carolina Cradle ...", p. 125. He is the head of Family 477 in the former SCOTT One-Name Study. He had, at least, a son named John SCOTT, b. ca. 1735 probably in VA or NC (who m. Agnes REED (ca. 1760) and died in 1811 in Livingston Co., KY); a son named James SCOTT, b. ca. 1737, and a daughter, Mary2 SCOTT, b. ca. 1738, who m. a John BURNET. We are reasonably sure our immigrant SCOTT ancestors were Scots-Irish and I strongly suspect he came into the U.S. through DE, MD or PA. We would certainly appreciate any assistance or clues and would be happy to exchange genealogical information with other SCOTT researchers. Please reply direct to: <bengantt@hal-pc.org>

    3. The postings are great! There have even been some connections made already. Let us know if you find a cousin! Here's a few suggestions: 1. Don't send your posting to me! Send it to SCOTT-L@rootsweb.com so it will be distributed. 2. Don't forget to put both locale and dates (or approximations) in the subject line and the message. There have a lot of George, William, John, etc. Scotts in the world! 3. If you're having trouble changing your email address on the list or getting off the list, then contact me. (To unsubscribe, send a message to SCOTT-L-request@rootsweb.com with just the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the message body or the subject line; To subscribe, send a message to SCOTT-L-request@rootsweb.com with just the word SUBSCRIBE in the message body or the subject line. Both must be sent from the email address of the subscription.) 4. By design, replies are sent directly to the person posting the message, not the list. If you have something that is general interest to SCOTT researchers, add the list's email address to your "To:" in the message header. The exception to this is the Digest version of the list where replies are sent back to the list. IF YOU ARE A DIGEST SUBSCRIBER, be sure to change the subject line when replying, DO NOT include the entire original digest in your reply, and CHANGE the "To" in your header to the original sender's UNLESS your reply is of general interest to all SCOTT researchers. 5. There are about 800 SCOTT researchers worldwide subscribing to this list. While we have had a lot of postings in the past 24 hours, there are still a lot of researchers we haven't heard from. You know who you are! End your silence and let us hear from you! 6. If your email Inbox fills up, additional messages may get "bounced." If your ISP has a limit on the email they are willing to store on their server, you could be unintentionally removed from the list if you are not reading and/or deleting your mail often enough. Depending on list activity and the version of the list you subscribe to (regular or digest) you could get automatically removed from a Rootsweb list in as little as a day. If you haven't gotten any messages from a list, send a subscription request from your email address to the list in question (see No. 3 above). If you're already on the list at that email address, nothing will happen. If you've been removed from the list, you'll be re-established. Caution: If you send the subscribe request from a different email address, you will receive email from the list sent to both email addresses. Be sure of the email address you used when you originally subscribed. (Did you mess up and get subscribed twice to this list? Drop me a note explaining what you think happened and the email addresses in question and I'll try to straighten it out!) David Scott Scott Surname List Administrator
