    1. Administrator Message: Going on vacation?

    3. Are you going to be away from your email for a while? There is a good chance you may not be subscribed to your Rootsweb list when you return. If your email mailbox fills, your service provider will begin returning (or "bouncing") messages sent to the list back to Rootsweb. After a certain number of these returns (anywhere from 4 to 8 depending on circumstances) you will be automatically removed from the mailing list. There is no way to tell the list you are on vacation and "hold" your mail. Any messages that are bounced will not appear in your email inbox. (But they aren't gone forever ... see below about the list archives.) How do you ensure you're still on the list after you return? If you haven't seen any postings for a few days, you can send a new email to LIST-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word SUBSCRIBE in the message body. "LIST" is the name of the list you wish to subscribe to, so be sure to substitute that name for LIST. If you wish to subscribe to the digest version, substitute a -D for the -L in the address. If you send a subscription request and you're already on the list, Rootsweb rejects the request -- you will not be double-subscribed to the list in the same mode. (You can subscribe yourself in both -L and -D modes but why would you want to get the same postings twice?) Or you can send me a message and I'll manually check the subscription list for your email address. Want to remove yourself from the list so your mailbox won't fill up with postings while you're gone? Two approaches are possible. One is to switch to Digest mode which will combine a day's postings into one email message. This will lessen the number of messages you receive from the list and it may prevent you from being automatically removed from the list. To do this approach, send a message to LIST-D-request@rootsweb.com (substituting the list name for LIST) with only the word SUBSCRIBE in the message body to add yourself to the list in Digest mode, then send an email to LIST-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the message body to remove yourself from the list in Regular mode. The other approach is to unsubscribe from the list entirely while your gone and re-subscribe when you return. To remove yourself, send an email to LIST-L-request@rootsweb.com with only the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the message body to remove yourself from the list in Regular mode. Substitute -D for -L if you are using Digest mode. What did I miss while I'm on vacation and/or not subscribed? Archives of all messages posted to the list by month are archived at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/LIST where the web page address ending ending of LIST is changed to the name of the list you wish to view. Another way to view postings to the list would be to use a searchable version of the archive. This method allows you to search by keyword for each year of the list by pointing your web browser to: http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=LIST where the web page address ending of LIST is changed to the name of the list you wish to search. Confused? Have questions? Something doesn't seem to work? Send me an email describing the problem, what you want done, and the name of the list and I'll respond to you in a timely fashion. 1. Scott--Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY
    2. Solving this brick wall is to help some other people who have looked for years for the parents of Absolom (sp?) Scott. Recently I came across a study of five different Scott families that lived in Cumberland County, KY during the time period of 1800-1865. The report was written in 1975 and is very well done. The writer could not connect the families. Do any of you descend from any of the families listed below? Group A: Absalom Scott family--lived near Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY and was there by 1806. Group B: Brothers--Nimrod, John and Jacob Scott. Other names in this line include: Allen C., or Clement Scott, son of Nimrod. Came to Cumberland County in the early 1800's. Group C: Thomas Scott and probable sons, Henry and Samuel. Thomas was born about 1765. They were in Cumberland Co., KY prior to 1810. Group D: Reuben Scott, Sr. family was in Cumberland County, KY by 1806. Group E: Any other Scott's who were in Cumberland County, KY in the early 1800's. I will be glad to share any information that I have on these families. I would also like to have any male descendants of these families, who carry the surname Scott, join our Scott Family DNA project. We already have two descendants of Absolom Scott who have been tested. A match with a descendant of one of the Scott families mentioned above could help us break down this brick wall. Thanks for reading this e-mail. Charlie Scott

Resided in Jonesville SC 2-Benjamin Francis Scott b 1830 settled in Cannon's Camp Ground of Spartanburg SC 2-Elizabeth Scott b 1831 never married 2-Nancy Caroline Scott who was the second wife of Miles Pucket listed above. b ? There are several John Thomas Scott descendancy lines listed on Ancestry.com which you should check out if you haven't already. Just go to ancestry.com and then use the search engines to find him. However, there was an article published in the Union Co SC Heritage Books that tells a little about the family. I will copy the first two paragraphs for you here........... The John Thomas Scott Family The first Scott family on record was the John Thomas Scott family. He was of English descent. He arrived here from Virginia in the early 1800's. He owned slaves and farmed a plantation between Jonesville SC and Union SC. John Thomas Scott was married twice. The name of his first wife is not known. This wife bore two children, (John) Lee Scott and Martha June (Scott)Puckett. Lee had a farm on Pacolet River near Pacolet, SC. Martha June married a Methodist Minister, Rev. Miles Puckett. He was the Junior Pastor of the Jonesville Charge. John Thomas' second wife was Jamima Smith from York County.......... The article goes on to list the children and tell - in some instances - what happened to them. I have tried to include the basic facts in the family listing above. I visited a descendant of John Thomas Scott who still lives in the Jonesville area of Union Co SC a few years ago. He was very helpful......he met me at the New Hope Methodist Church/Cemetery and pointed out some of the Scott descendant graves. His family still owns the old homeplace which is directly across the street from the church. I would like to know as much as possible about John Lee Scott who married a Mitchell widow with two children: Martha Ann and William. Thanks, Maria
