My fifth great-grandfather, Samuel Scott Sr., appears in the 1782 tax list of Washington County, VA. Next to him in this tax list is his son, Samuel Scott Jr., who was born in Peachbottom, York County, PA in December, 1760--according to a transcription of his family bible. My fourth-great grandfather, John Scott, was Samuel Sr.'s second son. Other sons were William (d. 1803) and Hugh (d. 1831). All but my John Scott spent the rest of their lives in Washington County, VA. John migrated to KY in 1806 and was in Wayne County, KY not later than 1812. My problems are twofold: (1) Despite years of research, I cannot find any definite antecedents for Samuel Scott Sr. (2) I can't place Samuel Scott Sr.'s movements between 1760 and 1782; I have come to believe that my Samuel Sr. was NOT the Samuel Scott who appears in several 1770's records in the area that was to become Washington County in 1777. In my journey, I have encountered many Samuel Scotts in 18th century SE PA and SW VA. I may even be the reigning expert. But I would be happy to encounter someone who knows more about this subject than I do. Dwight Scott

There has been a slowdown in activity on this list in recent days due to the holidays. I'd like to get things re-started by suggesting a ROLLCALL AND BRICKWALL call. So please post your ancestors relevant to this surname list and, most of all, let us know what your BRICKWALLS are! Please be focused and to the point - don't list entire pedigrees! The subject line should have a full name (if appropriate), locale abbreviation, a direction of migration, another locale abbreviation, and the approximate dates. For instance, George Scott moving from Scotland to New Brunswick, Canada, to Kentucky around 1820 to 1840 would look like: SCOTT, George SCT>NB CAN>KY abt. 1820-1840 If you don't know the complete name, migration route, or dates, it is permissible to leave them out of the subject line and put an explanation in the message body. However, the more complete the subject line, the more likely someone with a similar interest will read your email. BE SURE TO INCLUDE THE LOCALE AND DATE RANGE IN YOUR MESSAGE even if they are only your best guess. Both can make a huge difference in locating a likely connection! Howdy, Cousin- First off, Capt. John died in 1704, probably in Barbados. His father was Col. John Scott, b. abt. 1605 in Smeeth, Kent, and died fighting the Cromwellians at Alford, Hampshire, Eng. in 1642. I've not yet found his mother's name. He led an incredible and fascinating life, having been sold into bondage and shipped off to the New World, being instrumental in taking Long Island from the Dutch, becoming a privateer, Indian translator, lawyer, real estate speculator, cartographer, sea Captain in the Anglo-Dutch War in the Carribean, etc. There is a terrific biography by Lilian Mowrer called The Indomitable Captain John Scott. It's out of print but should be available at libraries or on eBay. Deborah Raynor was born about 1642, either in Southhampton or Stamford, Ct. Jeckomiah's children were: Lazarus, b. abt 1690 Jeckomiah Jackson, b. abt 1698 Thomas Deborah Sarah Mary Annie I'm not convinced that Sarah is Jecko's daughter, at least not the one who married this particular Richard Howell. If you check the given dates of birth for their children (ranging from 1680 to 1698), I think you'll see what I mean. Jeckomiah was born in 1663 and Sarah was supposedly married in 1678. It's unlikely that the daughter of Jecko had even been BORN in 1678. Adding to the confusion is the fact that so many siblings from several generations used the same names for their children, and that the Scotts kept marrying into the same families (like the Howells) over and over. Is your line of descent through Sarah? Still looking for my gg grandfather's brothers Samuel Scott born Oct 22, 1830 Saline Co. Missouri and William Scott born Jan 30, 1833 Saline Co. Missouri died Jan 10, 1866. Family Bible Records had the birth and death records. Samuel was gone from Saline Co. in 1871 when his father John Long Scott died. William may have never married because he died young and family records gave only the date of death. Thanks, Jerry W. Scott
