    2. Nancy Scott
    3. I have hit a brick wall with my John Scott and would appreciate any help locating his town/county of birth as well as his parents. He was born 18 Jan 1824 somewhere in Ohio, married Sarah Ann Fry 19 Jan 1848 in Gustavus, Trumbull County, Ohio. They lived at Williamsfield, Ashtabula County, Ohio next to her parents for the next 6 to 10 years before relocating to Crawford County, Pennsylvania. They moved to Grant County, Wisconsin in 1867, and he is buried there. I have been unable to locate a death record or obituary for him. I have his marriage record, but it gives only the date and place of the marriage and is signed "Caleb Brown" with no indication if he was a minister or justice of the peace. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Nancy

    1. [SCOTT] Re: john scott
    2. Hi Mary. Thank you for the comment on Mrs John Scott, that you found in the Pendleton Messenger. I had not see that, and I am certain that she is the wife of John Scott, born 1742, Lancaster County, Pa, and died in 1837, Anderson County, SC. So, Mrs John (Sarah) Scott died 3 May 1837, and John died 12 May 1837, Anderson Co, SC. Mrs Scott's first name is Sarah, but I have never been able to determine her surname. I suspect that she was not John's first wife, but cannot prove that as yet. I finally located John's grave, in the Varennes Presbyterian Church cemetery, located on SC route 28, south of Anderson, SC. Unfortunately his wife, Sarah is not there. However, adjacent to John's grave are two others, are James Thompson, b 10 Apr 1770, d 13 Sep 1833; and Elizabeth Thompson, b 5 Dec 1768, d 13 Apr 1848, wife of James. It is my opinion that Elizabeth is a daughter of John Scott, but have no proof, as yet. Although John Scott was born in Pa, he moved to Iredell county, NC, prior to the Revolution. He entered the service from Iredell county, and served with the Colonials for seven months, and moved to Anderson county, SC, after the war. His service number is S-21474, and is listed in the Revolutionary Records as such. John and wife, Thomas and wife as well as Lemuel and wife, were listed on page 113, of the 1830 census of Anderson county, SC. David Scott, with wife, Lucy Thornton (found later) was also listed on same page. David must be a son of Thomas. There is a marriage record of Thomas Scott and a Miss Morrah, and I think this is Elizabeth, found with Thomas in Elbert county, Ga, just a few miles across the Savannah River. There are several references to them here prior to 1800, as well as later. Lemuel was listed in the 1840 census of Elbert county, and the 1850 census of Franklin county, Ga. Acually, both may have neen in Hart county, which was formed from Elbert and Franklin in 1853. Fred E. Crump, Sr [email protected]

    3. This is so very true. We all would respect each other more if we respected our ancestors and all they did. They were not perfect and some even less, but without them we would not exist. Thank you for posting this, Linda. Good to collect these. 3. To all you genealogists in my address book...good thoughts. THE STRUGGLE TO FIND THEM We are people to whom the past is forever speaking. We listen to it because we cannot help ourselves. For the past speaks to us with many voices. Far out of that dark nowhere, which is the time before we were born, men and women who were flesh of our flesh and bone of our bone went through fire and storm to break a path to the future. We are part of the future they died for; they are part of the past that brought the future. What they did--the lives they lived, the sacrifices they made, the stories they told, the songs they sang, the food they ate and, finally, the deaths they died--make up a part of our own experience. We cannot cut ourselves off from it. It is as real to us as something that happened last week. It is a basic part of our heritage as human beings. Author unknown
