All I Want For Christmas Is A New Surname Dear Santa: Don't bring me new dishes, I don't need a new kind of game. Genealogists have peculiar wishes; For Christmas I just want a surname. A new washing machine would be great, But it's not the desire of my life. I've just found an ancestor's birth date; What I need now is the name of his wife. My heart doesn't yearn for a ring, That would put a real diamond to shame. What I want is a much cheaper thing; Please give me Mary's last name. To see my heart singing with joy, Don't bring me a red leather suitcase. Bring me a genealogist's toy; A surname with dates and a place. Hello Scott List. I am a new subscriber and would like to add my SCOTT family. SCOTT, George b. 18 March 1813 in Louth, Lincolnshire,England,a miller by trade (George was my gr. grandfather) Wife: RASPIN, Ånn b. ca. 1815 Louth, Lincs. Eng. Children: Charles b. 1842, Louth, Lincs.Eng. George b. 1843 Louth, Lincs. Eng.(died in 1852) Henry b. 1844 Louth, Lincs. Eng. Brooklina b.1849,Brooklyn, N.Y.(some discrepancy asto birth date) Georgiana b. 1850 Albany, N.Y. USA. Father: John Scott of Louth, Lincs. Eng. & Worksop, Nottingham, Eng. Mother: Sarah ? Brother: Thomas SCOTT b ca.1828 Worksop, Notts.Eng.was in Owen Sond, Ont.Canada in 1853. Possibly one or two other brothers also in Canada around Port Hope,Ont. names unknown. George Scott and family came to Savannah, Georgia in 1847 aboard the "Sarah Sands". Two children died at sea. Oral family tradition says that George was an Overseer on a cotton plantation near Savannah but refused to beat the slaves so was dismissed. He was in Brooklyn, N.Y. as a miller in the Directory of l850. His daughter Brooklina (and my Grandmother) was born in Brooklyn, hence her name. Georlgiana was born in Albany, apparently on their way to Canada. They lived in Peru on Lake Champlain for a time and Charles & Henry reputedly went to school there. They came to Canada in 1852-1853 and George's wife, Ann(e) RASPIN died in 1853 in Vittoria, Ont. near London, Ont. Canada. The family then came to Melville, Caledon West Township, Peel County, Ont. Ca. and bought a mill in 1857. George died in 1896. I speculate that Goerge had a fmily conection in Savannah , otherwise he wouldn't have come to the USA, with such a small family, on his own. Any information or connection either in England or Georgia would be greatly appreciated. Also, any information on George's father, John SCOTT would be most welsoe. Thank you Anne Stevens Newmarket, Ont. Canada.

Hello! My great grandfather was Everett (Evert?) SCOTT. This may have been his middle name. I cannot find anything on him. I know he married 1) Beaulah (Beulah?) WEST sometime around 1915. Everett had a brother Jack SCOTT and a sister Kate or Katherine SCOTT. Jack SCOTT married a lady by last name of WEST also. This SCOTT family lived around the Linn County and Chariton County area in Missouri in early 1900's. Children of Everett SCOTT and Beaulah WEST: 1) Everett Edward SCOTT - adopted to Mr. and Mrs. Wesley. They named him Paul. He lived in NV last I heard. 2) Albert Estel SCOTT - adopted out to whom I don't know. Named him Bobby (Robert?) 3) Earnest SCOTT b. May 10, 1920. Earnest does not know for sure his birthdate. The adoption agency guessed he was about 6 years old in 1926 and gave him a birthdate. He was adopted out to Hiram RUNYON and Mary Ann WOOD in Worth Co., MO. 4) Girl SCOTT d. about 1924 in a house fire. Beaulah (West) Scott, mother of the children, went into a sanitarium after the house fire which killed the little girl. Everett was an alcoholic and couldn't take care of the kids. They were adopted to other families sometime around 1926. Earnest SCOTT was on an Orphan Train in Carrollton, MO where he was picked up by the RUNYON's and adopted. Everett SCOTT went on to marry again and had at least 2 other children: 1) Ray Allen SCOTT b. abt. 1945 2) Patty SCOTT b. abt. 1947 Please, if anyone can help me on this family I'd be glad to hear from you! Lisa
Hi As the story goes in my family my great grandfather David Scott was the first emplo at Boots the chemist on Hockley. He later moved to Manchester to start a new shop there, where finally died. All I know about him is that he was born somwhere in Scotland, met his future wife in Ireland, a Margret Wheeler, before moving to Nottingham. All this happened in the 1800`s. Does this ring any bells? Ian

Hi Dorothy, What are IGI Sheets? My Scott's are from Monogalia County Virginia/West Virginia. They were apparently in the Revolutionary War and obtained the original Scott Land as Bounty. My Great Grandfather (born around 1880) was Amos Scott (last Scott to have a lot of the original Scott land) and his father was Marshall Scott (born around 1840) and his Grandfather was James Scott (born around 1815). I am looking for James Scott's Father and Grandfather. I think his Great Uncle or Grandfather was Captain David Scott-Revolutionary War-He died in around 1813 (I found his tomb stone with others in an unattended/unmarked Cemetary in Granville West Virginia-Monogalia County--I took pictures). Please pass this inquiry around. Thanks, Scott Rice

Every now and then, a list subscriber asks if it is okay to post a message that isn't specifically about a SCOTT surnamed individual or family. (***Please send any general tips to me, not directly to the list. I'll post as appropriate.*** Sending general information directly to the list may result in barring you from future use of the SCOTT list. Sorry, but it has to be that way to keep this list relevant and useful. See the List Rules and FAQ for more information. If you need a copy, let me know.) Sometimes, the message clearly isn't appropriate for our list. Other times, it be relevant. Here is a tip about Census Lookups that may prove valuable to your SCOTT research. Even though this tip isn't specifically for SCOTT surnames alone, from my own experience I know that the US Census is a valuable resource for finding our SCOTT relations and extended families (but always take census data with a bit of salt). Sometimes it may be difficult to locate in your local library the census for the locale and date you're interested in. This tip widens your resources beyond those in your town. Longtime subscriber Lynn Kutch ([email protected]) has done a great deal of condensing of the original Rootsweb message so that it might be more understandable. (Lynn has several genealogy/Scott web pages -- most can be found through the genealogy links pages at www.ClanScottSociety.org along with other helpful sites.) Thanks, Lynn! Here is a little more info on the SSDI and the Social Security Administration. Subject: Re: Social Security Death Index You'll find more information about SS-5 and the SSDI here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson10.htm The SSDI at RootsWeb will generate letter for you for the person of interest-just do your search for them in the database and click on the option for the letter. You can do this for anyone and get the letter and modify it to fit your person of interest, by the way. I see you said you did not find this person in the SSDI. The reason for that can be many (see more about that on the Guide #10). Also, the name might be in the database a bit differently than what you have, so be sure to do a thorough search for various possibilities. This process to obtain the SS-5 often takes several months, so be patient. It often is valuable in that it usually gives the parents' names.
