Hi everyone, I could use some advice. Here is my story... John Elvie Scott was brought to the US by his father (name unknown) from Scotland. The family story says that John's father was in trouble with the law, fled Scotland, and changed his name from Lowell to Scott. John was the only child he brought with him, leaving his wife and other children in Scotland. The only time line I have is that John had a son, Louis Elvie Scott, born 1880 in Illinois (USA). My questions are: Is Lowell a common name in Scotland? When (and how) did people change names? in the country of origin before boarding a ship, or when they arrived in the US, or both? Does anyone know where I can find a list of port cities in Scotland? I would also welcome any advice from others that have had similar problems in research. Thanks, Judy Scott-Blum [email protected]
Thanks for posting this information about cemetery symbols and meanings, that are often found on headstones. I have been looking for a few of these, and now know what they mean or stand for. This is a big help!
Hi, I'm new to the list and I am inquiring to see if anyone has any information on my Scott family. My 4th great grandfather's name was William Scott Matheson, he was born in Scotland. He ran away from home when he was a boy and got on a ship bound for America. An older relative came with him. The shipmates called him Scott because of his Scottish brogue. It's said because of this brogue, he changed his name from William Scott Matheson to William Matheson Scott. When they landed in Kingston Canada, there were relatives there. One brother named Robert and 2 sisters, one of them was named Isobel. They didn't like the fact that he had changed his name. Isabel traced the Matheson name back to the Marques of Lorne who later became the 8th Duke of Argyll of Scotland. She had all of the papers to prove this, however they were burned in a fire and so no proof existed that they were Matheson's. So the Scott named stood. However, my 2nd great grandfather had a Hymnal with his father's name written down as James Scott Matheson. This Hymnal has been passed down to Gene Scott Fadden, and then again to Scott James Dent. If there is anyone out there who can make any sense out of this and has any information about this family, please let me know. Thank You Carolyn Tucker [email protected]

Still searching for leads on James Thomas Scott, his parents and siblings. Any help most appreciated. James Thomas SCOTT, b/1802 Lincoln Co., NC. Parents unknown. Siblings unknown. His family moved to Overton Co., TN (between 1800-1820) where he "grew up." He had two children by his first wife, one child died before 1840, the other child, Nancy SCOTT, married George HILL and lived on Crow Creek in Franklin Co., TN in 1840. His second wife (possibly Susan or Elizabeth WILKINSON) lived near her father, William Wilkinson, 4 miles SW of Shumachers Meeting House in 1840. James Thomas SCOTT was living in Davidson Co., TN in 1840 when he went to prison for 5 years for "negro stealing." In his court records, the name of Thomas SCOTT was used. In his prison records, the name of James SCOTT was used. In his prison documents, he listed uncles Perry HILL of Franklin Co., TN, and two uncles living in Hardeman Co., TN named John PILES/PYLES and Quiller/Aquilla NEARING/NEARN. A James Thomas Scott is shown in the 1830 Hardeman Co., TN census, b/1800-1810 appears to be a possibility. E. Ray Hill New E-Mail Address: [email protected]

I know little about my husband's Scott family. Lucy W. Scott was born abt 1817-1821 in VA & died after 1880. Her parents were William & Rachel (Booker) Scott; Rachel's parents were William & Ann Elizabeth (Coles) Booker. Lucy W. Scott married Eaton Morris in Amelia Co., VA 24 Nov 1840; (he was born abt 1801 in VA & is possibly the son of Lewis & Ellen Morris. George Washington Morris, a son of Eaton & Lucy, married Frances Ann McCarty who was born in Rockingham Co., VA. Is there any connection between Lucy Scott & your Scott family? Would like ancestor info for Lucy as know nothing except names mentioned here (no birth dates, etc.). Have desc info re George & Frances if that is of interest. Eleanor Phillips

Just started on Thomas SCOTT, iron forger, born c1820, married Jane EWING c1840, died before 1865. Their daughter, Margaret SCOTT, my grandmother, born 1845, married William EADIE. Thomas may have had a link with Melrose and the Borders. Jane probably came from Muthill. Thomas seems to be a fairly unusual first name for an 1800s Scott. We hope to be doing some searching in Scotland later this year but any leads would be much appreciated. John (John Edmonds Moriac Vic. Australia)
