While I appreciate the helpfulness of those who have recently sent messages about genealogy scammers - (I certainly have no love for these scum) - I'm concerned that the SCOTT surname list is becoming a list of SCAMS instead of SCOTTs. Could you please try to focus on SCOTT surname genealogy rather than genealogy as a whole? Posting messages without direct relevance to the SCOTT surname dilutes the usefulness of this list. (Please stay on-topic.) 800 SCOTT researchers will thank you! By the way, if you ever wonder if a genealogy source is legitimate, check out http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm - this site is comprehensive and current. Checking a single site like this is far better than sending email warnings to surname lists. Those of you who have subscribed to this list for any length of time have seen this address on one of the rotating taglines at the bottom of messages from the SCOTT list. It looks like the fictitious Family Discovery genealogy service has moved to Prodigy now. I contacted Prodigy this morning and they have asked that anyone who receives solicitation email from familydiscovery.com take the following steps immediately: 1) Forward the entire Family Discovery message (including headers) to: [email protected] 2) Include the following information (most of which was provided by Rita from the Oconto County, WI list): Please note that the attached message is now being sent through your ISP service. They have been reported to various State Attorney General's Office on computer fraud, but it is hard to catch up with them. Originally the "company" linked to free information sites and placed the pages in "frames" so that it looked like it was their own work. Customers paid for that information. The scam, now, is paying for the free information links and then they "move" frequently and leave their paid-up customers without services. 3) Post these same instructions on any other lists today so that Prodigy has a better chance of finding the spammers.
The following is taken from today's Eastman's Newsletter: Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter - http://www.rootscomputing.com I have received e-mail about the following companies; all have been mentioned as having questionable services. I have listed URLs where you can obtain further information: Family Discovery.com - an online Web site that claims to have "the Web's most versatile Award Winning collection of genealogical databases." However, they don't mention the "award" they received from the Better Business Bureau! The Bureau says, "Based on BBB files, this company has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau due to unanswered complaint(s)." Family Discovery.com charges $59.99 for a one- year subscription. Most of the same information is available elsewhere on the Web at no charge. In fact, many of the links on FamilyDiscovery.com simply take you to free Web sites. You can obtain the same information at no cost by using one of the free search engines. Details are available on the Genealogical Web Site Watchdog site at: http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm#Warning. There is an Anti-FamilyDiscovery.com newsletter at: http://compuright.dyndns.org/familydiscovery/ The xxx Family Yearbook - In this case, substitute your last name for the "xxx." For instance, an advertisement sent to a person named Smith would be advertising The Smith Family Yearbook while someone named Clark would receive an advertisement for The Clark Family Yearbook. These "yearbooks" claim to have genealogy information. However, those who purchase the "products" are usually disappointed. The producing company has several business names; for example, you can find them listed as Mountain West News Service or as the Mountain Pacific News Service. They also may appear as an organizational name, such as "The Smith Family Yearbook." However, all these "companies" have the same address: 1181 S. Parker Road, #105, Denver, CO 80231. The Better Business Bureau lists the parent company as MORPHCORP. The News Herald of Panama City, Florida has an article about these "products" at: http://www.newsherald.com/articles/2000/04/16/tp041600.htm Family Tree House - I wrote about this company in the October 31, 1998 edition of this newsletter. The company gives an appearance of a Web site that offers genealogy services. In fact, it does not appear to sell anything. However, the same company advertises on another Web site with an offer to sell personal information obtained from genealogists who visit the Family Tree House site. You innocently enter personal information about yourself on Family Tree House and then operators of the site sell your personal information to bulk mail companies. Information for sale includes name, address, e-mail address and more. You can read that article at: http://ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm#sells

Dottie, I am ALWAYS interested in making contact with anyone who is researching SCOTTS in GA, so your post regarding Col. William SCOTT is much appreciated. I am researching my husbands ggg grandfather, Britain SCOTT of Emanuel County, GA. He was born between 1795-1799 - about the same time period as Col. William's son Robert G. SCOTT. I believe Britain was born in GA, but I do not know where. Also, I do not know who his parents were. He was in Emanuel County as early as 1814, according to county records. He was head of household in 1820. Britain married Nancy PRICE in 1816. They raised their family in Emanuel County, and as far as I know, they both died in that county. Have you run across a Britain SCOTT in any of your research for your family of Col. William Scott? Yvonne Scott
Hi, I am new to the list in the search for my Scott family. John Scott m Isabelle?, in Falkirk. They had 3 sons William, Walter & Andrew, 3 daughters, Mary,Margaret & Isabelle. John inherited "Woodend", in Bonnybridge. Walter is my 4th grgrandfather. He went to Ontario,Canada and married Mary MacGregor of Perthshire. I am trying to find John's family. His son William had a son Thomas, but I do not know Williams wife's name. I know Andrew & Isabelle never married. Also, going by the Scottish way of naming children, I believe John's parents to be William & Jessie Scott, just not sure. Walter was born in 1820, that is the only known date I have in this family. If any of this sounds familiar, please let me hear from you. JoAnn

My grand uncle William Tate (Tait), according to family history was on the Chicago Police Force. He was cut down by mafia machine gun fire. My guess is that happened about the turn of the century---1900 plus or minus. His sister was my grandmother - a Scott. Does anyone have suggestions or answers on the following" 1. Address of the historian of the Chicago Police Force if such exists. 2. Name and author or publisher of book(s) on the CPForce. Please respond to Robert M. Scott [email protected] to keep from overloading the Scott listing. Thank you in advance -----Bob Scott
Dear Duane, I agree it is bad enough to search for SCOTT'S but I will throw another SMITH into the mix & see what we can come up with. Hannah Susan Scott,b 1852-Atchison Co. Mo, d 1940-Atchison Co, Mo Married-Frederick W. SMITH,b ?, d ?(he disappeared before their son was an adult) They had one son-Earl Scott Smith,b 1885, d 1944 in Calif but buried in Atchison Co, Mo. To make this more interesting-Burlington, Iowa is not that far from Atchison Co, Mo. where the SCOTT'S were a pioneer family to the area. They came from around Indianapolis, Indiana. If anyone can add to the SMITH mystery it would be helpful. It's bad enough to look for SMITH but when the given name is Charles W. SMITH there are many that do not fit. Charles W. SMITH shows up in the 1870 census with two children, Hensen D. and Amelia. Samuel Scott fought in the War of 1812 (in 1812 & 1814). The family is said to have crossed the Ohio River from Kentucky & arrived in Owen County, IN in 12 Dec. 1820. He was an early settler of Franklin Township. (Hist.of Owen Co. & eulogy of Lafe Scott) Samuel Scott paid poll tax in Owen County in 1823 (Lister's Book). This is the earliest appearance of his name in the Lister's Books. In 1829 he paid tax on land in Franklin Twp, Sec. 2 SW, T9, R4, and Sec. 12 (sic) NW, T9, R 4, plus polltax & tax on one mare. Census 1830 shows Samuel Scott in Montgomery Twp. Also Thomas Scott. (Why listed in Montgomery Twp & not in Franklin? Did the township line change?) Census 1840 shows Samuel Scott in Franklin Twp. , also Robert, John, and William, his sons. Samuel Scott of Owen County, Indiana, U. S. Land Patent, Certificate No. 9604, south east quarter of the north east quarter of Section two, in Township nine North, of Range four West, in the District of Lands subject to sale at Vincennes, Indiana, containing forty acres, and twenty-three hundredths of an acre. 15 March 1837 Martin Van Buren. Samuel Scott of Owen County, Indiana,U. S. Martin Van Buren. Samuel Scott of Owen County, Indiana, U. S. Land Patent, Certificate No. 19576, south west quarter of the south east quarter and the south east quarter of the south west quarter of Section two in Township nine North, of Range four West, in the District of lands subject to sale at Vincennes, Indiana, containing eighty acres. First day of August, 1839. Martin Van Buren. Samuel Scott is buried in Scott Cemetery, Section 2, Franklin Twp., Owen County, IN. His tombstone: Major S. Scott, d 1855, 69 years, 7 months, 6 days. Elizabeth G., James M., William N.B., Dicy A., Mary L., George W., Emily, John T. M., Robert T., Nancy N., ...W., Thomas, and Jane. We visited the cemetery 13 April 1999. It is on the farm owned by Mr.&Mrs. LaFary, opposite the entrance to Dunn Road. (The other entrance to Dunn Road leads to Hicks Cemetery.) In the other house on the land are their daughter, Mrs. LaCivita and their children. Joe LaCivita, age about 10 years, took us to the graveyard & helped us find the stones, which were in bad repair, some upside-down on the ground, & others tilted, many very nearly illegible. Samuel Scott's stone was broken into about six pieces & the smaller writing on the lower part was quite illegible. Near his was a stone: Milly Scott, wife of Samuel, 7 Nov 1854, 60 years. Hers was upright & legible. Samuel Scott served as sheriff of Owen County . Blanchard's 1884 "History of Owen County" (p. 589) in the list of sheriffs gives "Samuel Scott, Democrat, 1833-34." It has been suggested that he was a founder of Martinsville, IN, but this does not appear to be the same person.
My great grandmother, Perlina (Scott) Towry, had a brother named Milas A. Scott, born in Arkansas in 1856. I am trying to trace any members of his family. I have been told he married, wife's name possibly Elizabeth, and they had the following children: 1.Cassie Scott 2.Niema Scott 3.Diana Scott 4.Dunesky Scott 5.Alonsa Scott 6.Dorothy E. Scott I know he was alive and well, and visiting his sister in Texas in 1916. My mother had a snapshot taken with her grandparents and her Uncle Milas at that time. If any of this sounds familiar, I'd love to hear from you. Joann, Texas

Hallo all from Sunny South Africa! I am a new member of the list and my interest is in the Scott family from (New) Aberdour, Aberdeenshire - and I am hoping that someone on the list can help me find an elusive ancestor. I would like to make contact with anybody on the list that is researching the Scotts from New Aberdour The Story of my Scott ancestor is briefly as follows: A Samuel Scott arrived by sea on the Gipsy Bride in South Africa during May 1858. The passenger list indicated that he was a ploughman and that he was to be employed by a Mr. Fell in Salt River in Cape Town. It is assumed that he came to South Africa on the so-called "assisted passage" program. Contact with a descendant of Samuel's father (Helen Allen, or Cousin Nel) in Larbert Scotland during 1973/4 indicated that Samuel last "port' was Dumfries "Cousin Nel" mentioned two brothers of Samuel i.e. William, an engine driver and the other a stonemason but the name unknown. From the names of the sons of our Samuel we can assume that the family names must have been Samuel, William and John. A further family name could have been George or McGeorge, the latter possibly indicating a link to the McGeorge family. I have found a family with similar names and a Samuel with similar age in Scots Origins, IGI and the LDS Family History Library. It was the best possible match. The father, John, was born in Kellywaren, Aberdour, Aberdeenshire and married a Margaret Garrard. Samuel was born on 24 March 1838 and his father in Dec 1807 Anybody with details of th New Aberdour Scott "clan" please contact me Regards Dennis Pretorius Krugersdorp, South Africa Tel +27-11-769-2400 Cel +27-83-324-2238 Web Site : www.krugersdorp.org E-mail :[email protected] ============================== Search more than 150 million free records at RootsWeb! http://searches.rootsweb.com/ Dennis Pretorius Krugersdorp, South Africa Tel +27-11-769-2400 Cel +27-83-324-2238 Web Site : www.krugersdorp.org E-mail :[email protected]
