    2. DO NOT POST VIRUS WARNINGS or any other off-topic messages on this list. That is fastest way to be removed from this list by the Administrator. Such postings will not be tolerated. (Please forgive this message, but some subscribers seem to need a reminder.) READ THE LIST RULES and FAQ sent to you when you joined this list. Virus messages are specifically prohibited as are many others. If you post such a message, you are put on probation (prohibited from posting) until you can convince the Administrator of your innocent intent. Those who cannot convince me or repeat the offence, will be blocked from the list entirely or re-subscribing. I regret these draconian measures, but they are necessary to keep this list on-topic. If your posting isn't about the SCOTT surname, please don't post it here. There are plenty of other places for other discussions but very few venues for SCOTT surname research! The virus warning sent today, like every other virus message posted to this list, IS A HOAX forwarded by a well intentioned person. THE FILE MENTIONED SHOULD NOT BE DELETED. If you ever get an email message about a virus, it is 99.99999% sure to be a hoax. 1. [SCOTT] Re: DANIEL AND RHODA (LANHAM) SCOTT
    2. I am descended from Daniel and Rhoda (Lanham) Scott. They were probably born in SC, but have been listed as being born in NC also. They were married in Ohio County, KY on 13 Jan 1814. Parents of Rhoda were Richard and Rachael (?) Lanham. Daniel and Rhoda Scott were in White County, IL on the 1820 census and remained in IL for the rest of their lives. They lived in Hamilton, White, Saline and Gallatin and it is not known where they actually lived at the time of their deaths, but probably died between the 1870 and 1880 census as they were not found on the 1880 census. The were in their late 70's on the 1870 census. Daniel and Rhoda had ca 8 children. We have Elias, Melinda, Lucinda, possibly Richard or Thomas (in question-Richard because Rhoda's father was Richard and Thomas because they name is used in the Scott Family), John J., Elizabeth and Meander Scott. Meander Scott is my g-g-grandfather. We have Scott Researchers who descend from Elias, Melinda, and Meander who correspond and try to put the puzzle together. Sometimes we do find pieces that fit and we are striving for a well researched family history. We are searching for the names of Daniel's parents, but have not been successful to date. Any info is appreciated. Darlene Shawn

I'm looking for any information on Hiram Ely Scott borned and died in Michigan perhaps Ingham or Clinton counties. Hiram married Pearl Hoisington in Michigan who was also borned and died in Michigan. Hiram and Pearl had seven children: Ray, Russell, Yvonne, Robert, Ronald, Richard and Marjorie. Hiram may have been related to a "General" Scott of Dewitt, Clinton Co., MI. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated because the above is all I have to start with. Paul Price Augusta, MI

    1. [SCOTT] Walter Scott
    2. I am trying to get some information on Walter Scott, born 1768 in Yarrow, Selkirk Co., Scotland. He married Mary Anderson, also born 1768, place unknown, on 15 May, 1793 in Yarrow. They emigrated to a small town later called Scottsville, near Lambeth, Ontario, Canada in 1735, I believe. They were accompanied by their son Mungo, and his wife Margaret, and their children, Walter died 6 Dec. 1851 and Mary died 8 March 1860. They left 2 daughters, Isabel and Helen, in Scotland. Mungo and his wife Margaret had 6 sons: John (my great-grandfather), Walter, Charles, James, William, and Hobbkirk. Most are buried in the family cemetery at Scottsville. Scottsville is no longer a place name on the map Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    1. [SCOTT] SCOTTs from MAD.CO,AL to LAMAR CO.TEXAS
    2. travis cope
    3. I've just uncovered part of my SCOTT line and will gladly share with others... The find itself was unreal... I knew from censuses that my gg-gmom listed herself as AL, AL, AL I also knew here Maiden name was SCOTT..... ...so, I'm in an old, overgrown, gone back to the wild, cemetery in Lamar Co. TX,,, searching for a different line of family...I "accidently" spot a stone marking the grave of T.H. SCOTT 1820-1900, and it is marked saying that he was from MADISON COUNTY, ALABAMA...his wife Elisabeth is next to him...I copied down info and took pictures...Later at the Library, in old newspapers I found my gg-gmom's obit. and sure enough it states that "she is dau. of T.H. SCOTT, one of the first settlers of LAMAR CO.TX..."...so I then found THOMAS HUMPHRIES SCOTT, son of WILLIAM F. SCOTT and NANCY JONES SCOTT. WILLIAM F. was a soldier in the WAR of 1812 and a Justice of the Peace in MADISON CO. ALABAMA. I have found that T.H. married Elizabeth CLUNN in 1846 and have found partial listings of some of their children and children's spouses... I'm happy to share info and would love to hear from anyone connected to this family. My gg-gmom it seems, is not known of by many researchers of this family and I hope to fill part of the gap in this SCOTT family line. my e-mail is [email protected] Travis W. 1. [SCOTT] Castle's Woods Virginia Frontier Settlement 1769-1799
    2. Hello, My names is Robert Cowan and I am a member of the Cowan and Wigton-Walker groups and recently sent the following e-mail to my list members. Because of the importance to other surnames I have decided to make this offer for a copy of James Hagy's thesis available to your group. This work is not copywrited and I would never offer any research material that was under copy protection without first obtaining permission of the author. That said, this is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a rather obscure document that is well researched and footnoted. If you have southwest Virginia, east Tennessee or even Shenandoah Valley roots then I would recommend you take a serious look this thesis which gives us a wonderful look at life on the Virginia frontier just before Boone heads off for Kentucky. I had seen references to Hagy's thesis for years, but only recently was able to purchase an original copy of this work. "I have recently obtained an original copy of the following thesis which was presented to the faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee State University, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of master of arts. It was published in June 1966 as follows: CASTLE'S WOODS: FRONTIER VIRGINIA SETTLEMENT, 1769-1799 by James Hagy This is one of the most fascinating bits of research I have ever read and it is an excellent research tool for anyone with Clinch River connections which is just about all of us. It is exceptional because of its extensive foot notes which reminds me of Carolina Cradle. There is one long passage which begins, "The first settlers apparently were William Snoddy, William Cowan, John Cowan, and Patrick Porter. Others soon followed. To some extent the settlement was a family affair......... The Cowans and Porters had moved from County down in Ireland to Pennsylvania about 1726..... it goes on and on and is the same story we have all heard many times over and always either attribute it to White or family legend. Sometimes we get so used to calling something undocumented or unsubstantiated because we forgot where the original source came from. At the end of this long paragraph, Hagy gives us a real clue and suggests we look at the following: M.B. Wood to Draper, August 23, 1883, Draper MS 4C27; William Russell to Governor Harrison, September 25, 1783, in William Palmer, Calendar of Virginia State Papers and other Manuscripts, from Jan 1, 1782, to Dec. 31, 1784, p. 532, and Thomas W Carter to Draper, Draper MS 4C26 and other sources including Maxwell History and genealogy by Florence Houston and Laura Cowan Blaine. The Draper Manuscripts, Wisconsin Historical Society, Madison are cataloged by letters and numbers the C being the papers of Daniel Boone. I am not talented enough to wiggle through all of Lyman Drapers papers but I bet Laura Cooper could find what is in these two Draper conversations." I would be willing to make copies of this 140 page thesis for $25.00 which includes priority mail shipping. If anyone is interested please respond to me privately at [email protected] Thank you for your interest. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105

    3. Article 2 of 11; 702 words Published on May 7, 2001, Page A1, Kansas City Star, The (MO) Eternal rest blocks highway construction effort under way to find relatives of those buried at plot Source: DONALD BRADLEY The Kansas City Star If the day were bright and trees didn't block the view, mourners at America Ann Holloway's burial back in 1858 probably could have seen for miles from the rise near the farmhouse.Indeed, the Holloways of Jackson County picked a mighty pretty spot for their family cemetery. How was this family - which probably farmed with mules - to know that almost a century and a half later, huge earth-moving machines would come plowing through its final resting place to make room for a new highway? State Click here for complete article ********************* Another burial plot could lie in path of new Missouri 150 By DONALD BRADLEY - The Kansas City Star Date: 05/14/01 22:15 William Holloway didn't know his pioneer relatives, the ones who came from Kentucky in the 1840s to settle in Missouri. But Holloway soon could attend those ancestors' burials. Reburials, actually. A highway construction crew unexpectedly unearthed the Holloway family cemetery, which lay in the path of the new Missouri 150 between Holmes Road and U.S. 71 on Kansas City's southern edge. Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation have been eager to find Holloway heirs to help with the exhumation and relocation of the nine graves. The state is paying all reburial costs, but having relatives to speak for the deceased can hasten the process, allowing the $13.6 million highway project to get back on track. Other heirs also have been found. That's good news for state officials because they want as many names on a petition as possible when they file in Jackson County Circuit Court to move the graves. They hope to file those papers within days. But now those officials ! have another worry. After a story in The Kansas City Star last week, genealogists and historians deluged officials with information about the Holloway family tree. They gave names and dates and even told of a Holloway link to Daniel Boone. "We sorted through all of them," said John Cave, attorney for the transportation department. But a few callers offered another kind of tip: Construction workers may run into another unplatted family plot as the highway project works its way east. "We know that's a possibility," transportation department spokesman Steve Porter said Thursday. The problem is that old family cemeteries, particularly those dating to before the Civil War, were seldom recorded. Thus, they were not identified when state officials planned the new route for Missouri 150. Callers to The Star suggested the other cemetery -- if there is one -- may be that of the Keeney family. Tom Keeney, a historian who lives in Belton, acknowledged that his ancestors operated a farm ! just east of the Holloway farm. "There may well be a cemetery not far from there," Keeney said. First, though, the Holloways. William Holloway, who lives in Terrace Park, Ohio, is the great-great-grandson of John C. Holloway, the family patriarch who loaded his family in a horse-drawn wagon and moved west. Records show that John C. Holloway acquired the property, either through purchase or homestead agreement, in 1848 and that several generations of his family farmed the land through the 1880s. Porter said some of the family eventually moved to Utah and Oregon, but many stayed in Missouri. The first headstone discovered at the site by construction workers was that of America Ann Holloway, who was the wife of John Holloway's son, Isaac. She died in 1858. State archaeologists later discovered what they believe are eight other graves. "It's too early to know what is going to be done," William Holloway said Thursday from his home in Ohio. He said he had no knowledge of his famil! y that far back and referred questions to Jay Roberts of Harrisonville. Roberts described himself as a "shirt-tail relative" of the Holloways, meaning he is related by marriage rather than blood. He's also a genealogist who has traced the Holloway family tree from the time John Holloway left Kentucky, and he has located several direct descendants of the pioneer. State officials were glad to get the help. But they won't like what Roberts has to say about that missing Keeney cemetery: "It might be in the direct path of that highway, and they could run right into it."
