One of the best ways (free!, the last time that I checked) to obtain census returns of Canada on microfilm is to order them from the Canadian Archives in Ottawa through inter-library loan. To do that, go to your local public library and if they have a microfilm reader the reference librarian will submit the request to Ottawa for you. Your branch of your public library might not have a film-reader but should be able to direct you to another branch that does. This is one of the services for which we pay taxes, so we should use it! Another free option is to find a university library or a genealogy society archive which has copies of the films that you wish to see. There should be no need to rent the films from Salt Lake City.
