Hi Helene You might try for a marriage record. Church are often better at giving out the information. Thanks Sheila: I do appreciate all the tips/ I have the marriage licence - it says he was born in Aberdeen (but then the ages aren't always stated correctly either) - death certificate says Winnipeg. It seems you are familiar with searching the census - could you tell me what area of Manitoba I should be looking in, for what I was told , the Red River Settlement. I think James had a sister Mary but that doesn't help much as she probably would have been married by 1901. Have gone through quite a few pages but there are so many! Oh well! Maybe something will show up one of these days. Think the different tips are great.
