Good Morning My family of Gunns came aboard the Prince of Wales to Ft. Churchill, Man where they were put off the ship because of sickness that had broken out. It is thought to have been typhoid. This group of settlers spent the winter at Churchill and then started what was to become known as 'The Overland Trek." Once at the RR Settlement, conditions were bad enough that many who came to Canada together on the Prince of Wales decided to leave and come to Ontario, to Elgin Co and the Col. Thomas Talbot settlement. However, not all of my Gunn family came at this time -- Benjamin who was with the HBC came c 1827/8; another brother arrived in Elgin Co mid 1830's. This small band of immigrants were tagged desserters for leaving the west. They finally made it to the Talbot settlement sometime in 1817 .... so any Gunn who was born in the west after this date or who immigrated from Scotland is pretty much a mystery to me. It is thought there were relatives who stayed in Arnprior, On on the way to Elgin co. and Gunn relatives that stayed in Manitoba. I don't mind sharing what I have if you feel our two families are related. Let me know ... Joan Do you have any information on how Benjamin arrived in 1827/28? I have MUNRO ancestors who supposedly arrived in Elgin Co in 1827 from Argyll. So far I haven't found a ship arriving anywhere at that time and haven't confirmed this date. That looks on the map like an awful trek from Hudson Bay to Lake Erie. It's hard to imagine what our ancestors endured in their search for land and freedom. D.
