Judy I'm not sure how the church handles all the information sent to them. My impression is that everything is placed in the IGI with no regard for source. It is very frustrating to find a family member's name and not be able to obtain any further information which seems to happen frequently with "patron" submissions. I have been using OPR microfilms recently. On those for marriages you can often find the father's name for bride &/or groom. Sometimes the occupation of the groom is given. It is usually "tennant" but I have found a schoolmaster among my ancestors which makes it easier to identify him. Often the village or farm where the groom lives is given. Although all of these records have supposedly been transcribed to the IGI, I have found some people on the microfilms who were not on the IGI. It helps to get as much information as you can from the IGI before ordering films, but then you can look page by page, name by name, in the approximate time span you are interested in. I am busy constructing the families of my ancestors in Argyll--Kilninver & Kilmelford Parish, Craignish Parish and a few others. I find it fascinating--and somewhat tedious. Good luck in your search.
