    3. Hi Robina, Most city directories I've seen are divided into several sections which allow you to determine either the address of an individual (males and widows), or the resident at a given address. The latter list will often provide the individual's occupation or the name of the company he works for or both. Another section of the directory was a sort of pre-telephone "yellow pages" Cheers! 3. Benjamin Gunn had endentured himself to the Hudson's Bay Co in Scotland 1813. He, his sibblings and parents left Scotland same time but on different ships. Benjamin on the Eddystone, the immigrants aboard the Prince of Wales. Both ships belonged to HBC. Typhoid broke out on the Prince of Wales and the captian put in at Ft. Churchill. A few weeks ago I was in Winnipeg at the Manitoba Archives/Hudson Bay co Archives and found that Benjamin changed ships and finished the trip aboard the Prince of Wales. He held various positions at different HBC posts over the years until 1827 when he is listed at Ft. Garry, Manitoba (not far from Winnipeg on the Red River) as a Freedman. I take this to mean the term of his endenture or contract was finished and he is next found in Elgin Co., Ontario in 1828. So he didn't come directly from Scotland to Elgin Co. in 1828. The Prince of Wales passenger list is on-line for anyone interested. Try a simple search on Google. 3. Good Morning My family of Gunns came aboard the Prince of Wales to Ft. Churchill, Man where they were put off the ship because of sickness that had broken out. It is thought to have been typhoid. This group of settlers spent the winter at Churchill and then started what was to become known as 'The Overland Trek." Once at the RR Settlement, conditions were bad enough that many who came to Canada together on the Prince of Wales decided to leave and come to Ontario, to Elgin Co and the Col. Thomas Talbot settlement. However, not all of my Gunn family came at this time -- Benjamin who was with the HBC came c 1827/8; another brother arrived in Elgin Co mid 1830's. This small band of immigrants were tagged desserters for leaving the west. They finally made it to the Talbot settlement sometime in 1817 .... so any Gunn who was born in the west after this date or who immigrated from Scotland is pretty much a mystery to me. It is thought there were relatives who stayed in Arnprior, On on the way to Elgin co. and Gunn relatives that stayed in Manitoba. I don't mind sharing what I have if you feel our two families are related. Let me know ...
