    1. [SCTCDN] Re: Canadian Census - 1881
    2. Judith
    3. Sherry, In your reply to Kathryn I see that you looked for a name in the whole of Canada in the 1881 census. If its not too difficult would you mind looking for any Brabner (and spelling variations eg Brabiner, Brebner). Sorry I can't be specific with areas so if it is too big a task please don't worry. Thanks. Judith (Sydney Aust)

    3. Dear Sherry, I will be most grateful if you can do a lookup for me in the 1881 census please. My grandmother was Eva Gertrude Robinson born 22 Feb 1878 Toronto the daughter of William Robinson and Ann Conran. Any census information on this family will be most useful. I have very little information about them. I have no idea if she had brothers or sisters or where her parents came from. Thanks very much Best regards Peter Ferguson Gunnawarra Woodstock NSW 2793 Australia

    3. Hi Listers; Can someone look up the above person in the 1891 census. He is my wife's grandfather and I am trying to trace his movements. He was born in Iroquois, Ontario in 1868 and was shown as at home in the 1881 census. We know that he came west and homesteaded near Moose Jaw in what is now Saskatchewan as he received Letters Patent on land in 1894. He was not married at the time. I cannot be more help than that. I would appreciate any help to show where he was in 1891. Many thanks in advance. If this is an impossible task please let me know. Malcolm in Calgary, Alberta

    1. Re: [SCTCDN] new to list, THOM(P)SON early Quebec
    2. Dear 'joelv', That all looks *extremely* suggestive of the correct chap. There's a painting of the family into which my William Thomson married, the Tannatt family of Savannah, Georgia, painted by Henry Benbridge in 1775, which shows the extended Tannatt family, and a researcher for the National Gallery of Canada has commented that it was done just before Heriot Cunningham Tannatt married. You have just identified a William Thomson who visited Savannah in 1775 and was of the 'correct' political affiliation. My chap turns up again having children in Quebec probably in the late 1780s (I only know their dates of marriage). We know that at least one of his brothers-in-law moved back to Scotland, then went out to Quebec. I will certainly send for the full information: do you know how I should set about it? The mention of slaves makes me wince rather, but I suppose that I should have expected it of a family with 18th century Georgia connections. Autres temps... Very many thanks for what might be the biggest breakthrough of 2002! Best wishes, Estelle (daughter-in-law of William's gggg-grandson)

    3. Hi Folks: I'm looking for any information at all on a man identified only as A. Blackwood, who was one of the earliest settlers in Lanark, Ontario. A man probably named Alexander or Andrew Blackwood was a member of a band of Scottish immigrants from Glasgow who came to Canada aboard the sailing ship Commerce and arrived at their new home in Perth County, Ontario in September, 1820. They were driven from Scottish soil by the severe economic depression that engulfed Britain following the War of 1812. He was one of 10 Scottish settlers who took up residence in what is now Lanark , near Ottawa, building one of the first homes in the village. Each of them received 200-acre grants. But from there, he disappeared completely. Does anyone happen to know anything about him? Dennis Bell in British Columbia

He was born on 17 Jul 1867 in Canada (probably Quebec since his mother language was French according to census data) Died on 12 Apr 1932 at age 64 years 8 months 26 days Father: J. A. Elliott from Scotland according to census data Mother: Armella Garbaier (name gathered from marriage record of Joseph Elliott and difficult to read so unsure of exact name) from Canada according to census data. According to census data he immigrated to the US in 1880. Does anyone have further information on his parents or where he was born or his parents? Thanks, Randy
