Hi All: I'm a relatively new member on this list, so this is my first listing of Scottish interests: McPherson, Alexander, a "native of Perthshire" (according to his tombstone), possibly Aberfoyle, possibly Aberfeldy, born about 1775, emigrated to what is now Lanark County, Ontario, circa 1817-1819. Married to Janet ???, born somewhere in Scotland about 1785. Two children, John and Alexander, born Lanark County. I'm trying, so far without success, to determine Alexander's place of origin and hence his forebears. Also, Janet's maiden name, birthplace, etc - no clue thus far. Miller, Richard, born about 1800, Haddingtonshire (?), married Margaret Thomson about 1826. Eight children, Margaret, John Richard, William, Richard, Andrew, Robert, Thomas, George, all born Scotland. Whole family emigrated about 1855 to Morris Township, Huron County. Am trying to determine Richard's specific birthplace and hence forebears. Thanks, Alec Macpherson.
Hi Morgan, yes I am Admin for the List and for a load of others including surnames that are fairly common around here. Perth history books is out of my league I guess - as I lived there was interested in other places. The Perth Mailing List's quite useful. Where are you? and are you likely to come this way again? Hullo Morgan. I lived in Perth for 15 years. Blair is only a short drive from there and a lovely part of the country. Robertson isn't the least common name as you will maybe already know. I can add my homebase area to your MacGillivray collection. I run the Cape Breton List, and live near Sydney. Just looking in my local phone book I can find 5 of them, and even more of the variant names as well. David River Ryan, Cape Breton. Dear Listers, Oral tradition has several siblings of my grandfather going to Canada at the turn of the 1900's. I cannot trace them in Scotland so there may be some truth in the tale. They were: ELIZABETH GORDON OGILVIE b. 08.APR.1879 JAMES OGILVIE b. 29.MAY.1881 JANET NESS OGILVIE b. 19.MAR.1883 ANDREW MALLOCH OGILVIE b. 06.JUL.1885 WILLIAM SMALL OGILVIE b. 27.FEB.1890 STEWART OGILVIE b. 30.AUG.1893 They were all born in Dundee, Scotland. I can trace brothers and sisters who are both older and younger than these 5 and am at a loss as to why they left, if they left and when they left. If anyone can shed any light on these brothers and sister I would be most grateful. Maybe someone could suggest a more appropriate mailing list than this one.
For the Roll -- Robertsons from Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland to Barney's River, Pictou County, Nova Scotia circa 1801-1803. Logan - not sure where in Scotland they came from, but family is found in both Colchester and Pictou Counties, Nova Scotia MacGillivray, unknown Scotland starting point, but family is in both Antigonish and Pictou Counties, Nova Scotia Cunningham - unknown Scots origin, but family is located in both Antigonish and Pictou Counties, Nova Scotia I also run the Pictou Roots mailing list, which has been online since 1996. We're the oldest regional mailing list for the counties of Pictou and Antigonish. My gggrandparents, Archibald McGill and Marion Cook (nee McCook) were born on the Kintyre Peninsula of Argyllshire Scotland. Archibald was born either on 3 June 1798 in Rhunahaorine or 14 May 1798 in Carnmore (now Corriechrevie) (almost certainly the former). Marion McCook was born in Brantian on 29 April 1812. Archibald and Marion were married on Lergnahunsion Farm on 20 February 1830. They moved to Ormstown, Chateauguay County, Quebec later that year. They moved with most or all of Marion's siblings. Their children were all born in Ormstown: Catherine 1/13/1833 (That was her baptism. Other records indicate that she may have been born in 1830 or 1831.), Andrew 11/23/1834, Margaret 8/25/1836, Mary 10/13/1838, Archibald 9/15/1840, Marion 2/14/1843, Rodger 9/22/1844, Elizabeth 12/21/1846, David 2/10/1849, Grace 5/4/1851, Neil 10/10/1853, and David 6/?/1856. The biggest question is; "Which Archibald McGill is My great great grandfather?" There is a lot of evidence to suggest that it is the one born in Rhunahaorine to Rodger McGill and Catherine McGeachy. All of that evidence is circumstantial, however. The "other" Archibald McGill moved to Erin Township, Ontario, as I understand it. A man named HW McGill researched that family many years ago and concluded that that Archibald McGill was the one born in Corriechrvie. I would like to make contact with that McGill family to confirm that Archibald's birthplace. Bruce

The Clothesline Said So Much A clothesline was a news forecast To neighbors passing by. There were no secrets you could keep When clothes were hung to dry. It also was a friendly link For neighbors always knew If company had stopped on by To spend a night or two. For then you'd see the fancy sheets And towels on the line; You'd see the comp'ny tablecloths With their intricate design. The line announced a baby's birth To folks who lived inside; As brand new infant clothes were hung So carefully with pride. The ages of the children could So readily be known; By watching how the sizes changed, You'd know how much they'd grown. It also told when illness struck As extra sheets were hung; Then nightclothes and a bathrobe, too, Haphazardly were strung. It said, "Gone on vacation now!" When the lines hung limp and bare. It told, "We're back!" when full lines sagged With not an inch to spare New folks in town were scorned upon If their wash was dingy gray; As neighbors raised their brows And looked disgustedly away. But clotheslines now are of the past For dryers make work less. Today what goes on inside a home Is anybody's guess. I really miss that way of life... It was a friendly sign; When neighbors knew each other best By what hung on the line!

The marriage is usually a week after the 3 consecutive weeks of banns being announced. As for the dates.............I was married in Ontario in 1963 and had the banns announced. I only found the error in the dates when I got my divorce 21 years later........found the date of marriage was wrong.....the church had 1962.........and the certificate was 1962. Hope this bit of info helps.
